PARENT NEWSLETTER
A Christmas Prayer
Father God,
When your precious Son became a tiny baby in a stable in
Bethlehem in poverty and simplicity, you changed our world. As we imagine those surroundings, we
join with the shepherds and the wise men in wonder and praise. We thank you for our material lives,
praise you for our spiritual lives, and trust in you for our eternal life. Amen.
Giving Tree Project
Are you an angel of giving? It’s that time of year again when we look to our community to support our
Giving Tree Project. We are asking for donations of gift cards. Last year through your generous
support we raised approximately $800. Let’s try to aim even higher this year! Remember to hand in
gift cards to your child’s teacher by December 13th. Thank You.
Virtue of the Month: Hope
Life is a constant Advent Season:
We are continually waiting to
become, to discover, to complete,
and to fulfill. Hope, struggle, fear, expectation
and fulfillment are all part of our Advent
experience.
The world is not as just, not as loving, not as
whole as we know it can and should be.
But, by choosing to live our lives according to
the example of Mary, we will hear God’s call to
wait patiently for the emergence of the light of
hope that can shatter our darkness, liberate us
from our fears and reassure us that we are
never alone or abandoned. May this Advent
season be the time for bringing hope,
transformation and fulfillment into the Advent of
our lives?

Toothy Tips for Parents
Current information on dental health in Peel
indicates that more than 1 in 3 children have
been affected by cavities. Cavities can lead to
infections in the mouth, pain, poor eating
habits, speech problems and expensive dental
treatment. Parents can play an important role
in helping to give their child a healthy smile.
Here are some tips for you and your children:
1. Have your children brush their teeth two
times a day for at least two minutes each time.
The most important time to brush is before bed
time.
2. Supervise and help your child with brushing
and flossing until they are able to tie their own
shoelaces.
3. Use Eating Well with Canada’s Food Guide
to choose healthy foods and snacks. Healthy
food choices can help to prevent the start of
cavities.
4. Take your child to the dentist regularly.
Children in Need of Treatment (CINOT)
Program
If you can’t afford to take your child to the
dentist, you can bring them to a Peel Public
Health dental screening clinic for a free dental
screening. You may qualify for dental care
through the CINOT program if you meet
eligibility criteria. For more information, or to
book a dental screening appointment, call Peel
Public Health at 905-799-7700.
Pediculosis (Head Lice)
Chocolate Fundraiser
Pediculosis, or head lice are a common
occurrence in schools. Head lice are parasites
which have been common among human
beings for centuries. They are not connected
with dirt and neglect. Anyone can be infested
with them.
Please check your children
frequently and if you find them infested, we
would ask that you let us know so we can
advise you on the proper treatment. If a child
does become infested, we will ask you to keep
your child out of school until he/she has been
treated with the correct medicated shampoo
and his/her hair is entirely clear of both lice and
nits (eggs). When the child returns to school,
the child needs to come to the office to be
checked before going to class.
Thank you to all of our families that took the
time to help our School Council with the “World’s
Finest” chocolate fundraiser. Just a reminder
that all monies and unsold chocolates due to the
school by Dec.3rd.
If we all cooperate in these procedures we can
address these occurrences in a sensitive
manner.
We may not entirely escape
outbreaks, but we will be able to bring them
under control

Family Literacy Workshops
This year St. Maria Goretti will continue to partner with the Region of Peel to provide families with free Family
Literacy Workshops. Family Literacy Workshops will increase parents’ knowledge and understanding of early
literacy activities for children ages 0-6 years. Parents and children will work together on an activity related to a
particular topic, and end with a story and nursery rhymes. The early years (0-6) is the most critical time for
development, and is significant to a child’s educational success. I strongly encourage all parents to consider
participating in this worthwhile program.
The workshops will take place in the library every Tuesday from 6:30-8:00 p.m. starting January 8th and
ending March 5th.
You may register for the program by calling 905-791-1585 x 7222 or online at

From “Gotcha” to Colour Groups
Creating an Inclusive and Safe Community of Learners
Last year we started an initiative to increase students’ feelings of safety, inclusion and community with a
―Gotcha‖ program. Each time a student was caught doing something positive or standing up for someone, they
were given a Gotcha to submit to the office. Once a week, time was put aside to recognize and applaud these
students while encouraging others to be ―caught‖ too.
This year we were very proud to build on last year’s program and to introduce our colour group system.
Students were placed in colour teams, which consisted of a teacher and students from each grade in the
school. Once a month these cross grade groups will come together to complete challenges, play games, learn
and have fun. They will become a team that helps and supports one another not just in the colour group, but
also in the yard and hallway. Our goal is for all students to feel that they are valued and feel safe at school.
We believe that we are like a ―Box of Crayons‖; each of us unique, but when we are together the box is
complete. If we could all learn from a box of crayons our school would be a better place.
12 Days of Christmas
The Donald M. Gordon Chinguacousy Park will be once again be hosting a Winter Wonderland
festival based on the theme the 12 Days of Christmas. The students in Ms. Laporte’s class were
one of the classes asked to paint a large picture of the 12 days of Christmas to be used in the
festival. They worked really hard to draw and paint each section of the poster by themselves
(with some help from some very special elves) and they are proud of their work. Although I am
not sure they are as proud as Ms. Laporte for all of the work they did to complete this project.
Donald M. Gordon Chinguacousy Park will be hosting a winter wonderland night to kick off the
display on Wednesday, December 5 from 6 pm to 9 pm. Activities included are
 Live entertainment
 Spectacular lights
 Family activities and hay rides
 Face painting, kettle corn and roasted marshmallows
 Nativity pageant with live animals
The painting will be on display for December and January so be sure to drop by to check it out!
Merry Christmas and God Bless
From the staff of St. Maria Goretti School.
Campion Corner
December 2012 Issue 6
One of the highlights of this school year will be our 10th Anniversary
celebration. As a school community we have grown in so many distinctive ways
over the last ten years that our staff and students have been preparing special
events in honour of these achievements. More details will follow in upcoming
newsletters.
On November 1st, 2012, three grade 11 students (Samantha M., Sharda P.,
and Chris V. see image) from St. Edmund Campion were selected to represent the
school at Dufferin Peel’s annual Student Voice Fall Conference. These students
were from Campion’s Harmony Movement and the Campion Peer Mentors group.
At this conference, our students were able to network with other students from
other schools and exchange ideas on how to express their voices in the school. The students also participated in reflection
activities and workshops exploring student voice and leadership. In addition, participated in interactive performances and
listened to inspiring motivational guest speakers. The students are looking forward to part two of the conference taking
place in spring 2013.
Even though we are only a few months into a new school year, Campion has already hosted many exciting events.
Our 6th Annual Girls Night In was held on Friday, November 2nd. This year the theme was “Be You tiful”. With over 100
grade 9 girls supported by over 30 female Campion staff, the girls participated in a fun-filled evening of workshops such
as Yoga, Dance, Nutrition (Healthy Eating), Arts & Crafts, and Stress Management. One highlight was a visit from
Olympian Valerie Hould-Marchand who shared her story of being an adolescent striving for her goals while faced with
the challenges of being a teenager. She spoke about her experience of bullying, friendships and her caring adult that
helped her through to her success. Students were lead throughout the night by their peer mentors made up of grade 11 and
12 female students. Parents of the grade 9 girls were also invited to a workshop on “How to Talk so Teens Will Listen”.
Additionally, Campion’s 6th Annual Silent Auction was held on Friday November 23rd with proceeds going to our India
Social Justice Mission. We also look forward to our community outreach with the Christmas Can Drive which has a target
of collecting over 10,000 cans for this holiday season and our evening Christmas Coffee house on December 15th
showcasing our school’s music, art and drama programs.
This year has been a record one for Campion Athletics and our entire school community is overcome with pride.
Every coach expects effort from all of their athletes, and here at Campion we instill it in every student. We all expected
our students to try their very best and perform at the best of their abilities, but what was accomplished in the fall of 2012
superseded expectations. Six fall teams, six 1st place regular seasons. A first time achievement for a school that is younger
than all of its students. Regardless of how the teams perform in the playoffs and possible subsequent provincial
championships, it remains a fact that all of the coaches, staff and parents of these amazing student athletes are extremely
proud of this remarkable accomplishment. This feat may or may not be attained again, but one thing is for sure: in the fall
of 2012, St. Edmund Campion stood proud atop all sports divisions because the students in this Brampton Northwest
community maintained the belief that anything is possible with faith, dedication and hard work.
Our academic efforts have also not gone unnoticed and we are thrilled to have made the Fraser Institute Report as
one of top 20 fastest-improving Ontario Secondary Schools. We are also proud to announce that we are the top ranked
co-ed secondary school in Brampton. Our achievements are a direct result of our commitment to engage students in
learning through our innovative programs and access to diverse courses.
Recently we were featured in the Brampton Guardian highlighting our new aviation course which will teach
aircraft manufacturing and be available to students in Grade 10 in the second semester. We hope this course will become
a Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) and benefit from the region’s vibrant aviation industry. A SHSM program allows
students to tailor their high school courses to build on their interests and talents. These ministry-approved specialized
programs allow students to gear learning towards a specific economic sector, like manufacturing, construction or business,
while meeting graduation requirements. It can also help students transition to apprenticeship training, college, university
or the workplace after graduation. Campion already offers Specialist High Skills Majors in the areas of Hospitality, NonProfit, Sports, and Arts and Culture.
We hope those of you who attended to our Grade 8 night on November 23rd had an opportunity to speak to staff,
obtain information on programs, extracurricular activities and athletics and are excited to enroll at Campion for next year!
We look forward to sharing more of our school’s good news and all of our upcoming events. In addition, we encourage
you to contact St. Edmund Campion S.S. if you have any questions or would like to get involved in any of the events
mentioned above please feel free to call us at 905-846-7124 or visit our website at www.dpcdsb.org/CAMPI.
