As we imagine those surroundings, we join with the shepherds and the wise men in wonder and praise. We thank you for our material lives, praise you for our spiritual lives, and trust in you for our eternal life. Amen. Giving Tree Project Are you an angel of giving? It’s that time of year again when we look to our community to support our Giving Tree Project. We are asking for donations of gift cards. Last year through your generous support we raised approximately $900. Let’s try to aim even higher this year! Remember to hand in gift cards to your child’s teacher by December 9. Thank You. Virtue of the Month: Hope Life is a constant Advent Season: We are continually waiting to become, to discover, to complete, and to fulfill. Hope, struggle, fear, expectation and fulfillment are all part of our Advent experience. The world is not as just, not as loving, not as whole as we know it can and should be. But, by choosing to live our lives according to the example of Mary, we will hear God’s call to wait patiently for the emergence of the light of hope that can shatter our darkness, liberate us from our fears and reassure us that we are never alone or abandoned. May this Advent season be the time for bringing hope, transformation and fulfillment into the Advent of our lives. Toothy Tips for Parents Current information on dental health in Peel indicates that more than 1 in 3 children have been affected by cavities. Cavities can lead to infections in the mouth, pain, poor eating habits, speech problems and expensive dental treatment. Parents can play an important role in helping to give their child a healthy smile. Here are some tips for you and your children: 1. Have your children brush their teeth two times a day for at least two minutes each time. The most important time to brush is before bed time. 2. Supervise and help your child with brushing and flossing until they are able to tie their own shoelaces. 3. Use Eating Well with Canada’s Food Guide to choose healthy foods and snacks. Healthy food choices can help to prevent the start of cavities. 4. Take your child to the dentist regularly. Children in Need of Treatment (CINOT) Program If you can’t afford to take your child to the dentist, you can bring them to a Peel Public Health dental screening clinic for a free dental screening. You may qualify for dental care through the CINOT program if you meet eligibility criteria. For more information, or to book a dental screening appointment, call Peel Public Health at 905-799-7700. Pediculosis (Head Lice) Pediculosis, or head lice are a common occurrence in schools. Head lice are parasites which have been common among human beings for centuries. They are not connected with dirt and neglect. Anyone can be infested with them. Please check your children frequently and if you find them infested, we would ask that you let us know so we can advise you on the proper treatment. If a child does become infested, we will ask you to keep your child out of school until he/she has been treated with the correct medicated shampoo and his/her hair is entirely clear of both lice and nits (eggs). When the child returns to school, the child needs to come to the office to be checked before going to class. If we all cooperate in these procedures we can address these occurrences in a sensitive manner. We may not entirely escape outbreaks, but we will be able to bring them under control 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and will be held in Room 301 at the Catholic Education Centre at 40 Matheson Boulevard West, Mississauga. Information will be provided regarding School Entry Planning for students entering JK, SK and Full Day Kindergarten. At the session parent(s)/guardian(s) will be reminded to ensure they register at their local school. Gordon Chinguacousy Park will be having a Winter Wonderland festival. Ms. Laporte’s class thinks you should go and see that festival. Why you ask…because we (Ms. Laporte’s class) made a huge and colourful painting of snowman playing at night that will be displayed in the park. We planned it, we drew it and we painted it all by ourselves. A special thanks to Mr. McCabe for teaching us how to paint in 3D (that was the best part!). We worked together as a team and created a masterpiece that we are very proud of. Go to the festival and check it out! You won’t be disappointed! St. Edmund Campion’s start to the 2011/12 school year was vibrant! Our staff worked diligently, preparing curriculum materials, and creating faith-filled, welcoming learning environments for all our students. Our school clubs, athletic teams and outreach groups have already participated in several events. We are fortunate to be able to write, that as per usual, we are proud of the efforts of all our students and teachers, and the dedication they show inside and outside the school when representing our community. Our Junior Girls’ Basketball team and Senior Girls’ Basketball team each respectively won Championship games this fall, this being the second year in a row for our Senior Girls. Over 300 children and their families attended our Student Council’s annual Alternative Trick or Treat. During this event local children took part in the Halloween experience led by the vision and creativity of our students and teachers. Our school’s Athletic Council is in the process of preparing for their annual Campion Christmas on Saturday December 3rd, which invites local families with younger children to come out and experience the wonder of Christmas through arts, crafts, games and a visit with Santa. Other events that are upcoming in our school community include: “Girls Night In” on Friday November 25th run by teachers and leadership students; Campion’s 5th Annual Mission to Nicaragua led by our P.E.A.C.E team along with our Chaplain and teachers; our Christmas Can Drive which has a target of collecting over 10,000 cans for this holiday season; and our evening Christmas Coffee house on December 15th showcasing our school’s music, art and drama programs. In preparation for this year’s Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test our school Literacy Committee put together an effective action plan providing our Grade 9 and 10 students with plenty of opportunities throughout the year to become familiar with OSSLT tasks in all subject areas. Teachers in each discipline are working with students to practice and master reading tasks and writing tasks found on the OSSLT. We are confident that this new approach will allow students to gain the skills and confidence they need to be successful. We look forward to sharing more of our school’s good news and all of our upcoming events throughout the school year. In addition, we encourage you to contact St. Edmund Campion S.S. if you have any questions or would like to get involved in any of the events mentioned above; please feel free to call us at 905-846-7124. Merry Christmas and God Bless from the staff of St. Maria Goretti School.
