What is the Brampton School Traffic Safety Council?
Brampton School Traffic Safety Council is a committee made up of citizen members from our community, as well as representatives from the
City of Brampton, the two school boards, Peel Regional Police, Brampton Safe City and Student Transportation of Peel Region. It reports to
Brampton City Council on matters related to traffic safety around schools.
The City of Brampton provides
school crossing guards for
children in kindergarten to
grade 5. For a full list of
crossing guard locations, visit
www.brampton.ca/roadworks
and click on Pedestrian and
Driver Safety.
Kiss and Ride Reminder
During the cold winter months, more parents
drive their kids to school. Please remember
the importance of using your school’s Kiss and
Ride area properly:
• Snow may cover directional lines on the
pavement. Familiarize yourself with which
lanes are used for drop-off and which are
drive-through only.
• Please do not get out of your vehicle, even
“just for a minute”. Staff and volunteers are
there to help your children get out of the
car and safety to the sidewalk.
• Slow down and be extra-aware. Plowed
snow piles in parking lots may limit space
and decrease visibility.
Be safe!
2013 Crossing Guard of the Year
Bonnie Lynn Coughlan has been a crossing guard since 2008. She works at Conestoga Road and
Sandalwood Parkway, watching over children walking to and from Somerset Public School.
Bonnie Lynn cares about the community and often takes it upon herself to report issues that
she deems unsafe in the area. Her commitment to safety has not gone unnoticed. People have
contacted both the school office and the Brampton Guardian to say what an amazing job
Bonnie Lynn is doing. She has a wonderful connection with neighbourhood families,
pedestrians and motorists alike, and they look forward to seeing her smiling face. It is clear to
see that no matter the weather, traffic or time of day, Bonnie Lynn does her job with a smile
for everyone. Thanks, Bonnie Lynn
Distracted driving is a leading cause of traffic
collisions in Brampton. It’s important to pay
attention when you’re behind the wheel –
especially when streets are slippery and
visibility may be poor. We all know it’s
dangerous (and illegal!) to use handheld
devices while driving – but even things like
eating, grooming, changing the radio station
or having a loose pet in your vehicle can be
dangerous distractions. Stay focused – you
could save a life.
