Pitoscia Virtue of the Month: Respect We all deserve to be treated respectfully by others. However, in order to be respected we also have to respect ourselves. Everyone has a right to go to school/work free of gossip, name-calling, and put-downs. We should expect to be treated with respect by everyone we meet – our brothers and sisters in Jesus. Prayer for Respect All mighty God, giver of all that is good. We thank you for the precious gift of human life. Guide us to respect all life. Like St. Francis, help us to see the beauty and goodness in all living things Help us to imitate your respect for life. For the life of children, making us glad with their enthusiasm For the life of young people, hoping for a better world For the life of the sick and disabled, teaching us humility For the life of the elderly, witnessing patience and wisdom. We thank you Lord. Like Blessed Mary, may we always say yes to your gift of life. May we have respect for all. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Friday, February 8th PA DAY Parent Teacher Interviews No School for Students To Light, To Guard, To Rule and Guide – Guardian Angels February is “Black History Month”. As part of our focus this month on the Catholic virtue of RESPECT, we recognize, highlight, and celebrate the gifts that our rich cultural and racial diversity enable us to experience and enjoy. PARKING LOT SAFETY We continue to thank all our parents and guardians who drive to the school to drop off or pick up students as they follow these simple guidelines: - Enter the parking lots slowly Do not back up your car once you enter the parking lot. Park in a designated parking spot first, if one is available. Continue to use only the Kiss ‘n Ride lane in the front parking lot. Please continue to not park your car in the Bus Lane. Never leave your car unattended in the drive thru lanes Idle Cars in the Parking Lot An important note to parents; vehicles should not be left running in the school parking lot. Idling wastes fuel, damages vehicle engines and sends harmful gases into the air. Children are particularly susceptible to the effects of air pollution because they breathe more per pound of body weight than adults do. School pickup and drop-off zones are one of the top places where children stand amidst exhaust fumes. We caution parents not to leave running vehicles unattended due to the potential risks this poses for students. Public Speaking Contest Wednesday, February 20th, students from Grades 4 to 8 will be participating in the school’s public speaking contest. Sock It to the Homeless As a community, we at Guardian Angels always strive to help those who may need comfort or assistance whenever we can. During these harsh winter months, it is a time when that assistance may be most needed. We have recently discovered that although food and shelter are vital for many of the homeless community, a simple item, such as a pair of socks, goes a long way to provide some warmth and comfort throughout these months. Mr. Bloom, together with Mrs. Parris’ grade six class would like to invite the Guardian Angels community to join us in our “Sock it to the Homeless” sock drive where we can ensure that clean and dry socks can be distributed to those who are in need. Beginning Friday February 1st and ending Friday February 15th, we will collect brand new, adult sized socks. Boxes will be placed for collection in the front foyer. Since February is traditionally a month where we express the virtue of love during the midst of winter, we are culminating this drive with a “Sock Hop” dance. If we reach our goal of 1000 socks, the whole school will be invited to participate in the Valentine’s “sock hop” on Friday February 15th! We hope that this small drive will somehow make a big impact, provide warmth, and perhaps a little cheer during a dreary winter! IT’S WINTER TIME...DRESS WARMLY! The cold weather has arrived and will be here to stay for a while! Please ensure that your children are dressed appropriately and warmly for this weather. Hats, winter coats, mittens and boots are the very minimum children should have for days like these. Layered clothing also helps keep the body warm. We will be attentive to cold weather warnings and wind chill factors. Our students will go outdoors, along with our teacher supervisors, for brief periods of time even on cold days. A modified outdoor time may occur depending on the temperature and/or wind chill. (e.g. 15°c to-20°c students go outside for 20 minutes and -20°c and colder students do not go out). Proper dress and physical activity will ensure that our students are warm for that period of time. Fresh air is important for everyone’s health. During the school day, children require outdoor time to exercise, to socialize, and to be rejuvenated and ready to learn! Let’s focus upon dressing properly and enjoying our wonderful Canadian winter! PLEASE DO NOT CALL THE OFFICE AS WE MONITOR THE WEATHER CONDITIONS FREQUENTLY! Fresh air is important for everyone’s health. During the school day, children require outdoor time to exercise, to socialize, and to be rejuvenated and ready to learn! Let’s focus upon dressing properly and enjoying our wonderful Canadian winter! Parents in the School Teaching your child in a safe and happy environment is our goal. With this in mind there is a Visitor Identification Program in place at Guardian Angels. All non-staff must report to the main office for identification and to state their business. During school hours, no one is permitted to visit classrooms or loiter in the hall. All parents/guardians are reminded that they should enter the school through the main front door and proceed to the office to sign in. We attempt to keep classroom disruptions to a minimum so that students can get on with the business of learning. Please note that all students are dismissed from their regular doors and should meet their parents/guardians at these doors. As always, your continued cooperation is much appreciated and allows us to provide the safest and best learning environment for the children. All are welcome. Ash Wednesday February 13th, 2013 March Break 2013 PHONE CALLS March 11th - March 15th, 2013 Between 2:30 and 3:30 each day our office receives numerous phone calls from parents with messages for their children. With the lines tied up, these are often left as messages on our machine. In an effort to ensure that we do not miss one of these messages and not get it to your child on time, we ask that you please ensure that arrangements are made the night be-fore and children know what they are to do after school. In addition, we encourage parents to send lunches, notes and messages in the morning with their child(ren) in an effort to avoid interruptions in the classroom. It is also extremely inappropriate for parents to request Mrs. Waud to get their children out of class to speak to them on the phone during instructional time. This creates unnecessary disruptions to the students, teachers and office staff. We understand that emergencies do happen and we will do our best to assist in these situations. Thank you for your cooperation.
