Mother of Unity Prayer Virgin Mary, our Mother of renewed faith, hope and love, instill in us your call to unity, so that we may be one in heart with you and the most Holy Trinity. Show us your way to peace and bring us to oneness in spirit and mind. All for the glory of God we pray. Amen. 4 VIRTUE FOR MAY: Acceptance This month we will celebrate the virtue of acceptance. The virtue of ACCEPTANCE means we accept ourselves and others just the way we are. God created all of us in His image, and God does not make mistakes. Being a part of God’s family means that we love and welcome everyone just the way Jesus did. Sometimes we find ourselves in situations where it is easier to follow the crowd than to stand up for what we know is right. DATES TO REMEMBER May 3rd First Holy Communion

The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops have decreed that, in our rite, the sacrament of Confirmation shall be conferred at an age determined by the diocese. The Archdiocese of Toronto has notified us that the elementary school grade for candidates for confirmation is to be moved from Grade 8 to Grade 7, effective September 8 2015. This means that, in the spring of 2016, Grade 7 and 8 students will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. GRADE EIGHT GRADUATION We will be celebrating the learning journey of our Grade 8 students on June 24th. The day will begin with a luncheon and dance for the students, followed by a graduation ceremony at Speranza Banquet Hall. Details will be shared via communication from classroom teachers Mr. Nasato, Ms. Sequeira and Ms. Tuason. EQAO In May, the Ontario Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) will conduct its annual province‐wide testing of knowledge and skills in reading, writing and mathematics of grade 3 and 6 students throughout the publicly funded school systems. The tests for Grade 3 students and for Grade 6 students will take place between May 25th and June 5th. Parents and guardians are encouraged to avoid scheduling any doctor’s appointments or any other appointments that would take your child out of school during the testing dates. Details regarding more specific dates will be forthcoming from classroom teachers. EQAO AFTER SCHOOL TUTORING PROGRAM The EQAO After School Tutoring Program is underway for eligible students in Grades three and six. The tutoring program provides students in grades three and six with additional support as they prepare for their EQAO assessment. This program ends Thursday May 21st, 2015. CATHOLIC EDUCATION WEEK Throughout Ontario, we celebrate Catholic Education during the week of May 3rd to May 8th, 2015. Catholic Education Week begins on a Sunday to highlight the partnership that remains the foundation of Catholic education between our Catholic schools and local Catholic parishes. Throughout Catholic Education Week, we ask you to reflect on the significance of Catholic education’s presence and contribution in our Church, and in our society. All parents, grandparents and guardians are cordially invited to visit their children’s classrooms as we celebrate Catholic Education Week, May 3rd ‐ May 8th, 2015. This is a wonderful opportunity to see your children’s learning in action. Please see the attached invitation to know when to visit your children’s classrooms. We hope to see many of you during our school celebrations! X MOVEMENT VISITS CARDINAL NEWMAN SCHOOL On May 7th and May 8th, X Movement will visit Cardinal Newman School to facilitate their Aussie X program with our students. Aussie X is an in‐school, camp, community sport and cultural program. Through the sports of AUSSIE RULES FOOTBALL, CRICKET, NETBALL and RUGBY, they promote the powerful life lessons of Havin’ a Go (trying new things), Goodonya Mate (praise others), You Little Rippa (celebrate Havin’ a Go). The program levels the playing field so that all kids, no matter their level of skill or ability, can enjoy the feeling of getting active. SHARELIFE Toonie Two‐Ball Toonie Two‐Ball is Back! What is Toonie Two‐Ball you ask? It's simple! Come ready to show off your basketball skills in the gym, where every student will be given ONE MINUTE to score as many points as they can. All we ask is if you could bring a Toonie on May 6th, all toonies collected will go to ShareLife charities. If you can't bring the toonie on May 6th, don't worry! Every student will be participating. Just try to bring your toonie for another day. So dust off your basketball shoes, practice your free‐
throws, grab a toonie and get ready to bring it like LeBron on Wednesday May 6th! Ice Hockey at EarnsCliffe Given that spring has seen the Leafs fall yet again, we are excited to announce our 13th Annual Students vs. Staff/Parents Hockey ShareLife Fundraiser on Thursday, May 14th from 1:40 to 3:10 p.m. at Earnscliffe Arena #2. All are welcome to come and enjoy the action with our students who are invited to give $1 or more to the worthy cause of ShareLife. Annually, ShareLife social service agencies provide over 381,000 services locally and assist countless many around the world. They feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, protect the meek, and care for the sick. Our goal is $500 clear of ice rental ($160.00) and we have already received an anonymous donation of $50.00 toward this worthy cause. In order to boost our total and the potential fun and return value, "Chuck‐A‐Puck for a Buck" is back and we are hoping to give away some worthwhile prizes. In support of this venture, any member of our school community who is able to donate a prize is kindly asked to contact Mrs. Charron, Mrs. Castro, Mr. Palmieri or Mr. Nasato by Monday, May 11th. Together, "you can work wonders!" Thank you for your support! PLAYGROUND ACTIVITY LEADERS IN SCHOOLS (PALS) P.A.L.S. (Playground Activity Leaders in Schools) is a playground leadership program for schools and it encourages children to participate in activities during recess. Cardinal Newman C.E.S. is excited to announce the return of P.A.L.S. to our school yard. May of our grade 4 and 5 students have been trained as P.A.L.S. leaders. The leaders are outside at lunch recess in the primary yard where they allow our primary students to participate in a lot of fun, exciting and cooperative games. We thank the P.A.L.S. leaders for their dedication and commitment to the program. The PALS motto is, “There is always room for one more”. We are grateful to Mrs. D’Aguanno and Mrs. Weber for organizing and overseeing this wonderful program for our students. A MESSAGE FROM OUR ECO TEAM How can parents help The Cardinal Newman Eco Team?  Send in clean, dry milk bags (they will be used to make mats for countries in need)  Send in used batteries or old cell phones for recycling  Buy reusable containers and pack your child a litterless lunch everyday  Encourage your child to boomerang (take home) compostable items from their lunch Thank you for your help and cooperation in making our school Greener! Thank you to Mrs. Abela‐Prins, Mme Strazzeri, Mr. Nasato, Mrs. Patterson and Mrs. Clarke, our DRAPCE representative on C.S.A.C. for their work with this initiative. SOCCER INTRAMURALS Our grade 2 and 3 soccer superstars are continuing to kick up a storm during our soccer intramurals. The round robin games are coming to a close end, with the final play offs in sight. The excitement filled games will continue through the month of May. Information on final results will be announced in our June newsletter. With special thanks to Mrs. Sztork, Ms. Moniz‐Baptista and Mrs. Capel for their work in organizing and overseeing the primary soccer intramurals. JUNIOR FLOOR HOCKEY INTRAMURALS The junior division floor hockey league came to a close, with the Sharks outswimming their competition in an exciting final against the Panthers. With special thanks to Mr. Trias for his work in organizing and overseeing the junior floor hockey intramurals. CARD CLUB The Card Club has been a great success within our Cardinal Newman community! This initiative continues to produce a large lunch hour crowd. Sometimes in these days of computers, iPads, video consoles, and other expensive toys we forget that a simple pack of cards (or two) can provide hours of fun. Cards are inexpensive, easily portable and endlessly adaptable. Child friendly card games such as Go Fish, Crazy 8's, memory and Prez have been popular choices among the club participants. Don't forget: new joiners are always welcome! With special thanks to Mr. Palmieri for his leadership with this initiative! DIVERSITY CLUB The concept of diversity encompasses acceptance and respect. It means understanding that each individual is unique, and recognizing our individual differences. The diversity club continues to foster relationships through dance, music, board game, sign language, art, social and self‐reflection activities. We are amazed at how the students in the diversity club continue to show enthusiasm, commitment and willingness to participate in our weekly rendez‐vous. Our motto is "We Are One". With special thanks to Mrs. Patterson, Madame Guglielmi and Mrs. Roussy for their leadership with this wonderful opportunity for our students! INTERMEDIATE BASKETBALL The month of April saw the Intermediate Boys' Basketball Team begin their run in the DPCDSB Championship Tournament. They travelled to St. John Fisher for their first‐round games. The boys impressed with their play and succeeded handily with a perfect 4‐0 record. Well done, gentlemen! The team now preps for their second round competition at St. Anthony in early May. Good luck team!!! A BIG Congratulations goes out to our Intermediate Girls Basketball team! Our girls demonstrated incredible work ethic and determination this season. At our mini‐family tournament our girls won all of their games to make it to the final game against St. Jean Brebeuf. Sadly, the girls lost by a mere 3 points in our final game. Although our season has ended, our intermediate girls deserve a huge applause for their commitment, dedication, passion and talent. Your coach is incredibly proud of all of you ‐ you have all grown so much this year and I am honoured to have been working along side you. Excellent work team! GRADE 8 GIRLS’ GROUP Cardinal Newman Catholic Elementary School is pleased to present the "Grade 8 Girls’ Group" which has garnered a wonderful response and is set to begin the first week of March. This after‐school program will promote confidence, positive communication, stress management strategies and introduce ways to support a healthy lifestyle. Each session will focus on a particular theme and the girls involved will work collaboratively on arts based activities. The Girls’ Group was made possible through the generous funding from a Dufferin‐Peel Innovation Grant, as well as the profits made through the Cookie Crew Treat Thursday program. Thank you to all the girls who have registered for this program! We are very grateful to the staff who run this program: our Grade 8 teacher, Ms. Sequeira, our Social Worker, Ms. Budd and our Child and Youth Worker, Ms. Farra. BOYS, BOOKS & BASKETBALL PROGRAM This year some of our intermediate and primary students will have the opportunity to participate in our Boys, Books & Basketball program. This program will allow some of our intermediate and primary boys to work on their reading together. By reading and discussing books together they can help develop important reading skills such as decoding, reading fluency and reading comprehension. After spending some time reading, the boys will get to cooperate and develop team building skills through a game of basketball. This will create a great leadership opportunity for a number of our intermediate boys and a great mentoring opportunity for some of our primary boys. With special thanks to Ms. Moniz‐Baptista and Mrs. Kastoris for their leadership with this opportunity. LOCKS AND LOCKERS All students who have a locker assigned to them should have a combination lock on their locker. This ensures that all personal belongings are securely stored away. In 2015‐2016, we will be offering combination locks at a subsidized cost of less than $5. These combination locks will come with a master key that will be kept in the office in cases where students forget their combinations. Further details to follow. DRESS APPROPRIATELY FOR THE WEATHER With warm weather approaching, we would like to remind everyone of the importance of wearing respectful and appropriate clothing at school. Students are expected to dress in a manner suitable for the occasion and appropriate to the school environment. In keeping with the Board’s Mission and Catholic School teachings, each school is committed to standards of neatness, modesty and good taste. Additionally, it is important to remember that over exposure to the sun can cause skin damage. We remind students to take precautions to protect their skin during recess times. The following are some suggestions to help protect your skin:  Wear protective clothing to cover the skin  Wear a hat to protect both the eyes and the skin  Wear sun block; the higher the protection factor number, the greater the protection  For younger children, please also consider leaving a change of clothes (or even just socks) in your child’s backpack. This will alleviate calls home requesting dry clothes.  Please check the weather forecast to ensure your child is prepared for changes in temperature and/or precipitation. THE ONLINE REPORTING TOOL The Dufferin‐Peel Catholic District School board has developed a new way to help nurture a safe, caring and inclusive school environment. The Online Reporting Tool is intended for students in grades 3 – 8 who become aware of bullying incidents and negative behaviours. The student can simply ‘click’ on the link found on our school’s website to fill out the report. The report will then be directly emailed to the principal and vice‐principal to be dealt with accordingly. It is important to recognize that the Online Reporting Tool is an alternate reporting option. It is best practice to speak directly with a responsible adult at home and/or in the school. MOVING? We are beginning the process of staffing and organizing classes for the 2015‐2016 school year. If you are planning on moving out of the Cardinal Newman School area, and are not returning to Cardinal Newman School in September, please advise the Office as soon as possible. CATHOLIC SCHOOL ADVISORY COUNCIL MEETINGS Our Catholic School Advisory Council will be holding their meetings at 7:00 p.m. in the Library. All parents are invited to attend. Please see dates below: May 4, 2015 June 15, 2015 ~ 6:30 p.m. Social Gathering NEWS FROM YOUR CATHOLIC SCHOOL ADVISORY COUNCIL We are preparing for our Play Day which will be held on June 19, 2015 with a rain date of June 22, 2015. Our theme this year is “PLAY”. We are calling out to all our parents. We need your help! We are looking for volunteers to assist us in making this year’s play day the best! Volunteers are needed from 9:15 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:15 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Please ensure you have a volunteer Criminal Background check completed and handed in to the school. Our Catholic School Advisory Council is working hard on our new Parent Resource Library. There will be a variety of books available to our parents. A letter will be sent home with your child regarding access and will detail the books available. VOLUNTEERING ON TRIPS & AT SCHOOL Volunteers working in the school and supervising any school trips MUST have a valid Criminal Background Check. The original must be brought to the main office for verification and photocopying by office staff. A copy will be kept on file at the school and the original returned to you. Application forms for Criminal Background Checks can be obtained through the school office. Volunteers must complete the application and take to the police station for processing. ANNUAL OFFENCE DECLARATION FOR VOLUNTEERS WITH A VALID CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK All volunteers with a valid Criminal Background Check on file are required to complete an annual offence declaration. Please complete the attached Annual Offence Declaration for Volunteers form and return it to the school office. YARD SUPERVISION A reminder to the parents and students that yard supervision does not begin until 9:00 a.m. Students who arrive early at school will have to remain outside. Some parents drop off their children as early as 8:45 a.m. This practice puts your children at risk. We respectfully remind you that it is your responsibility to ensure appropriate care for your children prior to 9:00 a.m. BUS INFORMATION Please check the Region of Peel’s Transportation Department’s websites (www.stopr.ca and https://businfo.stopr.ca/) to check for delays and cancellations. All concerns and complaints regarding bus transportation are to be made directly to the S.T.O.P.R. at 905‐890‐0614 PIZZA AND SUBWAY LUNCHES Pizza Days continue to run on Tuesdays. The cost is $2.00. 2015 Sub Days are May 21st, and June 18th. Order forms will be sent home each month. SEVERE FOOD ALLERGIES As has been mentioned previously, we continue to ask for your co‐cooperation in keeping our school safe for all our students and staff. Several students and staff in our school suffer from severe, life threatening allergy to all nuts, peanuts, nut products, shellfish, etc. This is a medical condition that causes severe reaction to certain allergens that can result in death within minutes. Although this may or may not affect your child’s class directly, we require your continued cooperation in sending foods to school with your child that are free from peanuts, nuts or their by‐products, and nut‐substitute products. We cannot guarantee that any classroom is nut free, but we are attempting to minimize exposure and keep everyone as safe and healthy as possible. We appreciate your help and support in this important issue. We ask you to please refrain from sending birthday and special occasion edible treats into your child’s class. Instead, perhaps you could recognize a special event by sending in a non‐edible treat e.g., pencils, stickers, notebooks. Another alternative is to commemorate your child’s birthday by purchasing a book for donation to our school library. Should you wish to do so, we will be happy to place a sticker with a sentiment similar to: “Donated by Noah Brooks in honour of his 5th birthday on October 18th, 2015”. Thank you in advance for your support and understanding. LATE ARRIVALS & EARLY DEPARTURES As in the past, we ask that you call the school on the days that your child will be absent or late. This is a safety precaution that can save precious moments should there ever be an emergency situation. We thank you for your continued support in following this procedure. If your child will be late or absent from school, it is very important that you notify the school before 9:00 a.m. by leaving a voice mail message on the attendance line at 905‐792‐2268 and pressing 1, for the attendance voice mail. You should speak clearly and leave the child’s FIRST and LAST NAME, the teacher’s name, and the reason for the absence or lateness. Any student arriving at school late is required to come to the office to request a late slip. This allows us to change our attendance information, and mark your child late, rather than absent. It is very important that students arrive to school on time and ready to work, as late arrivals disrupt instructional activities and classroom routines. We respectfully request that whether students walk or are driven to school, that they are at school before the bell rings at 9:15 a.m. SUMMER LITERACY CAMP 2015 Summer Literacy Camp is a THREE WEEK program.  Begins the second week of July and runs from July 6th‐24th  Half‐day program – 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Monday to Friday  The registration fee is $300 per child  For SK to Grade 6 students Principal recommendation is required for students to be invited to register. The program is best suited to serve the needs of students who meet the following criteria:  Student performance is at Level 1 or 2 of the Provincial Curriculum in Reading and Writing  Instructional level is not more than one year below age appropriate grade level  If ELL, the student performs at ELL Stage 2 or higher ALLEGATION OF SEXUAL ABUSE REGARDING THE LATE FR. (JIM) ROTH, OSFS Information regarding an allegation of sexual abuse of a minor related to the late Fr. James (Jim) Roth, OSFS, is posted on the Dufferin‐Peel Catholic District School Board’s main webpage at www.dpcdsb.org. Additional information, including where to report abuse or suspected abuse, is also posted on the website of Father Roth’s religious order, the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales, at www.tdprovince.org and the Archdiocese of Toronto at www.archtoronto.org . Please consult these sources as appropriate. PLASP CHILD CARE SERVICES PLASP Child Care Services operates Before and After School Programs at this school. Catholic Education Week: Exploring Paths of Joy
Catholic schools are Catholic communities. Catholic schools are faith communities. We – parents, students, teachers,
administrative and support staff – walk and grow together in the faith which we received at our Baptism. And it is the ‘together’
that we grow. Our growth is primarily a relationship with God, who at our Baptism, called us by name. But the response of each
of us to that growth is both personal and communal. We grow in our faith in the nurturing atmosphere of our Catholic
community be that of our local parish, our home, or our Catholic school community.
Our school community will celebrate Catholic Education Week 2015 in ways that are appropriate to our students’ age. We invite
you to participate in one or other of these activities as your personal time and work schedule may permit.
There are five sub-themes for each day of Catholic Education Week:





Monday – Walking Together and Sharing Our Stories
Tuesday – Opening the Scriptures
Wednesday – Welcoming Others to the Table
Thursday – Recognizing Jesus in the Breaking of the Bread
Friday – Proclaiming the Good News
Every year, the Ontario Catholic School Trustees’ Association (OCSTA) provides our Catholic schools with a resource kit to help
schools prepare for Catholic Education Week. Using these resources as well as our own developed activities we have prepared a
series of activities which will highlight how our school is ‘Exploring Paths of Joy

DevelopingMindsetsthatPromoteGrowth
Whatdowemeanby“mindset”?
Mindsets are the assumptions and expectations we have
for ourselves and others. These attitudes guide our
behavior and influence our responses to daily events.
Dr. Robert Brooks
Probability:
A number from 0 to 1 that
shows how likely it is that an
event will happen.
TipsforFosteringaGrowthMindset:
Tip#4.Bemindfulofthegoalsyousetforyourchildren
andthemessagestheysend.
 Work with your child to set goals that are
reasonable and desirable for both of you.
 All goals should emphasize growth – the
development of a skill or the expanding
knowledge.
Grades 7 & 8: Continuing
the Conversation About
Your Money Decisions!
Let’s discuss “Money in the News”…
 Have your child monitor the news in all its forms (T.V., on‐line…) to watch for stories about money.  Talk with your child about some of the stories or items they have heard about in the news (e.g., how could this ‘news story’ impact our community and/or family financially?) Big Bi
Ideas
In probability situations, one
can never be sure what will
happen next.
Try this game during a car ride:
Call out events and have your child decide whether it is
something likely, is not likely or will never happen. You are
limited only by your imagination! (e.g., we will swim in January,
a dinosaur is coming to the local zoo, the leaves will change
colour in the fall)
