Day Catholic School Advisory Council Meeting at 7:00 p.m. NEWS AT NEWMAN The school year is off to a start! All the students are academically focused and have settled into their classes. October was a busy month for activities outside the classroom as well at Newman. Our Cross Country Team did very well at the Family of Schools Meet. Four of our students will go to the board finals. Thank you to all of the coaches for all of their hard work and dedication in training our students. Choir, Youth Faith Ambassadors, and PALS will be starting in the coming weeks. Our Iron John and Iron Joan Justice Mentors from Sheridan College have begun helping students in classrooms and outside at recess on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. An after‐school program for those students who have returned permission forms has begun. We would like to extend a big thank you to the Cardinal Newman community for their Terry Fox donations of $773.75 for cancer research. Our Halloween Dance was a huge success! We would like to thank the Cardinal Newman Community for their generous donations of $329.35 to help support our Breakfast program. Although our Breakfast program is funded by Breakfast for Kids Boys and Girls Clubs of Peel Region and the Ministry of Children and Youth Services, we are required to raise a portion of the money to support this wonderful program. We currently have approximately 175 students of 506 students accessing our breakfast program. PROGRESS REPORTS As per Ministry of Education guidelines, students in Grades 1‐8 will receive progress reports on November 11h. Interviews, for students requiring, will be held the evening of November 13th, 2014. CARDINAL NEWMAN’S DIVERSITY GROUP We have had a wonderful response this year from students in grades 6 and 8 who are eager to participate in Cardinal Newman’s Diversity Group. These students meet once a week to learn about various disabilities and challenges with the ultimate goal being to develop an understanding that all of us possess strengths and weaknesses and that we all are uniquely created by God. The students had the opportunity to experience what it is like to live with a disability in a special “Discover Me” workshop. They have watched short videos that have demonstrated how two youth in spite of blindness and deafness were able to navigate their environments independently. The Diversity students will begin to meet with the students in our Needs Moderate Class to prepare them for the upcoming Arts Olympics Event which will be held at St. Thomas Aquinas Secondary School on December 3, 2014. This event brings together students from various schools within our Family of Schools and students with varying exceptionalities and abilities and provides them the opportunity to participate in drama, dance and song. The students are looking forward to this wonderful event! Ms. Reis and Mrs. Patterson BREAKFAST CLUB The Cardinal Newman C.E.S. Breakfast Club will be running again this year. The program is serving breakfast to approximately 175 students of 506 students every morning between 9:00‐9:15 a.m. We are deeply grateful to the teachers involved in this endeavour! ECO NEWS Off to a great start this year! Our whole school was involved in waste presentations in October. We learned about the appropriate items to recycle and will be receiving recycling posters for each classroom. Then we took part in our annual Harvest Cleanup of our school grounds and Earnscliffe park area. Students on our Eco Committee distributed bins to help classrooms follow Eco friendly practises and will continue to monitor how we are doing. If your child would like to join the Eco Committee please have them visit room 10 for an application. We are always eager to have new members to help Cardinal Newman School in its Eco Quest! How can parents help? Use reusable containers when packing your child's lunch and encourage your child to boomerang or bring home compostable waste. Also we are always looking for parents to help with our Eco events, you can contact Mrs. Prins if you are interested. PIZZA AND SUB DAYS Pizza Days continue this month on Tuesdays. All pizzas orders are taken ahead of time so that the proper amount of pizza is ordered. There will be no orders taken after the final classroom collection. Cost for pizza is $2.00. We will have sub day on the 3rd Thursday of the month. Order forms will be sent home. Please complete and submit order forms by indicated due date. STUDENT ABSENCE AND LATES As in the past, we ask that you call the school on the days that your child will be absent or late. This is a safety precaution that can save precious moments should there ever be an emergency situation. We thank you for your continued support in following this procedure. If your child will be late or absent from school, it is very important that you notify the school before 9:00 a.m. by leaving a voice mail message on the attendance line at 905‐792‐2268 and pressing 1, for the attendance voice mail. You should speak clearly and leave the child’s FIRST and LAST NAME, the teacher’s name, and the reason for the absence or lateness. Any student arriving at school late is required to come to the office to request a late slip. This allows us to change our attendance information, and mark your child late, rather than absent. We would also like to ask for your cooperation with afternoon dismissal. If you need to pick your child up earlier than 3:45, we ask that you please send a note to your child’s teacher in the morning, advising them of the time required for pick up and the reason. We cannot interrupt classes during this time, for unannounced departures. CATHOLIC SCHOOL ADVISORY COUNCIL NEWS Our Catholic School Advisory Council will be holding their meetings at 7:00 p.m. in the Library. All parents are invited to attend. We would like to extend a warm welcome to Mrs. Franco as our new Catholic School Advisory Council Chair. ALL STAR READING PROGRAM The All‐Star Reading Program is in need of volunteers. All Star Reading is a remedial program aimed at supporting struggling readers in Grades 1 and 2. Volunteers must commit to 1.5 hours weekly. The requirements to volunteer include providing a copy of your valid CBC (Criminal Background Check), an interest in working with young children and proficiency in reading and writing in English. A training session will be provided for new volunteers. If you meet the above requirements and are able to volunteer, please contact Mrs. Battista, our SERT teacher, through the school office. FIRE AND LOCKDOWN DRILLS Children have participated in three fire drills and one lockdown drill this fall as per DPCDSB policy. Our neighbourhood police officer joined us during our lockdown to observe and guide us to ensure we carried out a safe and secure process. Well done, students and staff! INDOOR/OUTDOOR SHOES Students should have a pair of indoor and outdoor shoes in order to maintain a clean environment and to permit students to be prepared in case of unexpected evacuations. LOCKERS All students who have a locker assigned to them should have a combination lock on their locker. The combination for the lock should only be given to the classroom teacher in case the student needs help opening their locker. YARD SUPERVISION A reminder to the parents and students that yard supervision does not begin until 9:00 a.m. Students that arrive early at school will have to remain outside. Some parents drop off their children as early as 8:45. This practice puts your children at risk. We respectfully remind you that it is your responsibility to ensure appropriate care for your children prior to 9:00 a.m. DRESS APPROPRIATELY FOR THE WEATHER Recess breaks serve a special purpose in the daily life of the school. Students are expected to go outside for fresh air and exercise. If your child is sick, please keep him/her at home until they are well. This prevents the risk of your child spreading their illness throughout the classroom. There is NO indoor supervision at recess as staff are occupied elsewhere or on duty outside. We ask that students dress appropriately; i.e. coats, gloves, mitts, boots etc. Where possible please put identification (your child’s initials) on your child’s belongings. If they are dressed warmly, they are better prepared to participate in outdoor activities during recess and noon hour. Please be advised that students are kept indoors at recess during the winter only when the weather conditions are extremely cold. AFTER‐SCHOOL: BUS AND NON‐BUS STUDENT AREAS Bus students are reminded that they MUST have their bus tag attached to their backpack in an easily visible location so teachers can check as you board the bus. Also, bus students MUST line up, FDK‐Grade 8, in front of their assigned pylon in Gym 1 IMMEDIATELY at the bell. Students who fail to follow this rule may have bus privileges suspended. Non‐bus students waiting to be picked up at the end of the day are reminded that they must wait in the fenced courtyard area in front of the library windows. NO students should be waiting anywhere on the sidewalk area in front of the school. The sidewalk area must be clear for the safe boarding of bus students. TRANSPORTATION Bus stops have been assigned by the transportation department and any changes to the assigned stop must be handled through the school office. Requests for changes can take up 10 days to be implemented. Please ensure your children are getting on and off the bus only at the stop that has been assigned to them. It is also important to remind parents and caregivers that all students in JK, SK and Grade 1 must be met at the bus stop. Any child not met at the bus stop will be returned to the school and parents will be required to make arrangements to pick them up from the school. Only students who have been issued a bus tag, which must be attached to their backpacks in a highly visible location, will be permitted to ride the bus. All concerns and complaints regarding bus transportation are to be made directly to the S.T.O.P.R. at 905‐890‐0614. Please check the Region of Peel’s Transportation Department’s websites (www.stopr.ca and https://businfo.stopr.ca/) to check for delays and cancellations. PERGOTSKI, PSYCHO‐ED CONSULTANT We are very fortunate here at Cardinal Newman Catholic School to work with a team of dedicated support staff. Our Psychological Services Staff work with students, their parents and school staff to determine student’s learning strengths and needs as well as addressing behavioural and emotional needs. M. Facey is the School Speech and Language Pathologist and works with students to develop their oral language and L. Budd is the School Social Worker who supports students and families in the school community. As part of the school’s team process, we regularly meet to discuss student’s behavioural and academic needs. Recommendations from these meetings will be communicated to parents, and various interventions may ensue. One such intervention may be a referral to the Young Minds at Play Program. Young Minds at Play is the Dufferin‐Peel Catholic District School Board’s version of the Primary Project. The Primary Project was developed over 50 years ago in Rochester, New York, and provides support for students in Kindergarten to Grade 2 to enhance school related competencies and reduce social, emotional and school adjustment difficulties by providing individual attention from a caring adult. We are very fortunate to be able to offer this program to students. Should your child be a candidate for this program, you will receive communication from the school shortly. REMINDER AND RESOURCES: COLD AND FLUE SEASON As cold and flu season approaches, the Dufferin‐Peel Catholic District School Board continues to be vigilant in ensuring that our schools are clean and that our school communities are educated regarding good hand hygiene and cough etiquette. These practices are promoted on an ongoing basis, but as the prevalence of colds and flu increases, our board increases the cleaning of contact surfaces, as well as reminds schools to review cold and flu prevention with students and staff. Many resources are utilized from our regional health units. A reminder, as well, that communicable diseases can be contracted in public places throughout the year. For example, cold‐related viruses, such as Enterovirus, are transferred from person to person through hand contact. Cold and flu viruses typically peak from December through February, but can start as early as October. Regional Health Unit Resources Please assist us by reviewing good hand washing procedures, as well as other preventative measures, as outlined in the various Peel Health and Wellington Dufferin Guelph (WDG) resources available to you through their websites. As always, children who are unwell, should be kept at home. Flu Clinics Also available on the Peel Health and WDG websites, are the schedules of local Flu Clinics.
