Litany of Thanksgiving
Let us give thanks to the Lord, for he satisfies the thirsty he fills the hungry with good things, and he heals the afflicted.
Let us celebrate his abundant goodness.
We thank you, gracious Father, that you provide for all our needs, for food on our tables, for the clothes on our bodies, for the beds we sleep in, for the dwellings that shelter us.
We praise you, Lord, for all your gifts that go beyond our basic needs, for the things that make our work easier, for the conveniences of modern life, for the beauty and pleasure that you bring into our lives.
Thanks be to God!
Happy Thanksgiving to everyone and may God bless your families with good health and happiness.

The first CSC meeting of the year will take place on October 2 nd .
A new executive will be elected and we are excited to begin planning many exciting initiatives for this school year.
We shared our expectations for a positive, safe school environment at an assembly with our students.
They were reminded of how valuable the 3
Rs, respect for self, others and property, are to have amazing school community!
Our key messages which students hear daily during the announcements are:
Be kind to each other, and keep your hands, feet and
comments to yourself.
On behalf of the entire staff, we wish you a very
Happy Thanksgiving on October 14 th .
Enjoy and be
thankful for the many blessings that God has
bestowed upon us.
Sincerely yours,
A. Tavares & G. Graci

FIRST MONTH BACK AT SCHOOL
We would like to thank you once again for your patience, understanding, and support during the first few weeks of school.
Our school enrollment is presently at approximately 650 students.
Our BBQ & Open House was another great success.
Thanks to the School Council members and all the volunteers who helped out with the evening!
Thank you also to all the parents/guardians who were able to come out and join us.
EXTRA! EXTRA! READ ALL ABOUT IT!
Please note that in our effort to be a more Eco ‐ friendly school, we encourage our parents to access our monthly newsletters by visiting our school website: www.dpcdsb.org/CORNE and view all our newsletters there.
All information can be retrieved from previous months in case an event or date has been forgotten.
TERRY FOX / CHILDHOOD CANCER
AWARENESS DAY- September 26 th
Students and staff had an opportunity to remember Terry Fox and his courageous fight against cancer along with children who suffer from cancer.
Students were asked to contribute a
Toonie for these two great causes.
Students from Kindergarten through
Grade 8 participated in the walk, run or roller blade.
These challenges go a long way to not only raising more money for the cause, but also for building school spirit.
If your child did not bring in their donation, we are still accepting them until Thursday, October 3 rd .
Our goal is to raise $ 1, 000!
Also, we encourage parents to sign up for the St.
Cornelius School monthly newsletter to be automatically delivered to your mailbox.
If you did not already sign up for electronic delivery and wish to do so now, please call the main office to share your email address.
Electronic newsletters will begin being sent to email addresses beginning in November.
Note that email addresses will not be shared with others.
We thank you in advance for your support in helping St.
Cornelius reach our goal of 80% of news sent electronically!
THANKSGIVING FOOD DRIVE
A reminder from St.
John’s Albion/St.
Cornelius Parish and our student Faith
Ambassadors that we are having a
Thanksgiving Food Drive starting Monday, Sept.
30 th and running until Friday, Oct.
11 th .
Please drop off any non ‐ perishable food items at the school.
Thank you for caring for the needy.
FIRE PREVENTION WEEK
October 6 th to October 12 th is Fire
Prevention Week.
The theme for this year is “Prevent Kitchen Fires.” The Fire
Department reminds us of how important it is to check smoke alarm batteries and to prepare and practice home fire plans.
Every family should know how to exit their home in the event of a fire.
An alternate exit and a meeting place should be determined.
More helpful information can be located at : www.fiprecan.ca
.
LUNCH PERIODS
Lunchroom rules and indoor recess rules are posted in each classroom.
Students are continually reminded about these rules.
We also do not allow students to bring food outside in the yard.
A reminder that we ask ALL students to bring nut ‐ free snacks to school.
MINISTRY OF EDUCATION FOOD AND
BEVERAGE POLICY
As some of you may be aware, there is a province ‐ wide
policy that affects each and every school in Ontario.
The intent is to provide students with more nutritious food and beverage choices.
To this end, we have been proactive and have worked with our food suppliers to ensure that they are in compliance with this new policy
(e.g., Catering for Kids, Airport Pizza, Subway, and Treat
Tuesdays).
For more information, please visit: www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/healthyschools/policy .

MESSAGE FROM SUPERINTENDENT
Welcome!
Whether it is your first time entering school or you are returning, we are very excited that you have chosen to be a member of a strong and vibrant Catholic school community.
As the newly appointed
Superintendent of the Brampton
East/Caledon/Dufferin/Malton (BECDM) Family of
Schools, I would like to take the opportunity to thank our devoted teachers, school administrators, administrative assistants, custodians and support staff, who have spent countless hours to ensure that the school year offers tremendous opportunities for learning for all our students.
As a Catholic school, we are privileged to be supported by our local pastors, who in partnership with the school staff, actively nurture the spiritual development of our students.
In addition, our three trustees ‐ Frank Di
Cosola, Scott McLauchlan, and Thomas Thomas ‐ are committed advocates of Catholic Education and the success and well ‐ being of all students.
As we anticipate the tremendous opportunities that await another school year, I would like to thank you for entrusting us with your child(ren) and for your support of Catholic education.
It is a covenant that all of us within the BECDM take very seriously.
Sincerely,
L.
Storey, Superintendent
Brampton East/ Caledon/Dufferin/Malton Family of schools
CONSTRUCTION SAFETY REMINDERS
As you are aware, there is construction occurring at this time due to the new housing development backing onto our school property.
Some construction site safety tips for students and parents include:
Do not enter active construction areas or areas that are secured with safety boarding.
Travel with caution and slow down when in construction zones.
Be alert for construction workers, children, cyclists, pedestrians and heavy equipment.
Follow posted signs that explain detours, lane closures and other changes in driving conditions.
Use extra caution in the evenings when it’s dark or during rainy weather.
IMPORTANT REMINDER
Some of the students in our school have severe life threatening allergic reactions to nuts, peanuts, peanut butter, peanut oils and any peanut by ‐ products.
For some children, the smell of nuts can bring on a severe attack.
We need your cooperation!
We kindly ask that you DO NOT send snacks to school that contain nuts or any nut products.
Should you be interested in sending in something for your child to share with his/her classmates, we suggest you consider bringing in a non ‐ edible treat such as pencils, stickers, etc.
No home or store bought baked products are
permitted.
Please note, that to ensure the continued safety of all students, the Dufferin ‐ Peel Catholic District School
Board with the support of the Anaphylactic Society and the Peel Health Department has recommended that students not bring WOW ‐ BUTTER (a soy ‐ based, peanut putter substitute) to school.
We thank you for your cooperation in supporting student safety.
SPECIAL ASSIGNMENT TEACHER (SAT)
This year Dufferin ‐ Peel will have a Special Assignment teacher visiting each school in the system on a monthly schedule to assist with the teaching of numeracy across the curriculum.
The SAT will be working in partnership with classroom teachers to implement the Numeracy
Plan.
She will be working with groups of students as well as individual students alongside the classroom teacher to target the learning needs of all students.
This teacher may be working in your child’s classroom from time to time throughout the year.
We again welcome Mrs.
Virtue as our SAT teacher.
Children will have the opportunity to benefit from additional classroom help to ensure greater learning success.
We are excited to provide a collaborative teaching opportunity for students in our school.
Our goal is rooted in the faithful practice that
each individual is a child of God and belongs to our
Catholic community of learners.
TREAT TUESDAYS ARE BACK!
We will be selling PPM 150 compliant healthy snacks including popcorn and baked chips priced at $2.00.
We will be starting in October with Grades 1, 3, 5, & 7, followed the next week by Gr.
2, 4, 6, & 8.
Dates will be shared shortly.
This pattern will continue for the rest of the year because of our large school population.
Together in Faith and Excellence 3
Please be advised that we are continuing to implement the transportation computer system.
You can track your child(rens) bus stop, pick up and drop off time, delayed buses, cancellations etc.
at the following website:
TRANSPORTATION:
BUS SAFETY EXPECTATIONS
For their own safety and the safety of others, students are expected to follow the following guidelines while waiting for, boarding and
riding the school bus.
Students are to wait at the designated bus stop and be considerate of the neighbouring properties.
Students should be on time for the bus.
It is suggested the arrival be approximately 5 minutes ahead of the scheduled pick up time.
‐ While waiting for, and boarding the bus, students should practice good traffic safety principles.
Students are not to board the bus (in their neighborhood) until the bus is completely stopped and the lights are flashing.
Extra precautions should take place in the winter months when the roads are slippery.
‐ Students should remain seated while the bus is moving.
Students are not to reach out or put any part of their body out of the window.
‐ Students may talk quietly with their friend in the same seat
‐ Students are not to eat or drink on the bus
‐ Students are expected to follow the direction of the bus driver and respond accordingly.
Students should be aware that transportation is a
PRIVILEGE, which may be revoked for inappropriate conduct.
DISCIPLINE AND CONDUCT
The conduct of individual students on the bus directly affects their safety and the safety of others.
For this reason, the authority of the driver, principal and vice principal of the school must be recognized.
When improper conduct is reported on the first occasion, the principal/vice principal shall speak to the pupil.
On the second occasion, a letter and/or phone call is made to the parent.
Subsequent reports of improper conduct may result in the restriction of bus privileges.
At the discretion of the principal/vice principal, severe misconduct or repeated misconduct may result in removal of bus privileges .
Please note that students are not permitted to
Together in Faith and Excellence travel on other students’ school busses.
In the event of an emergency, this may be considered depending on seat availability.
In this case, parents are required to send a letter to the school with their child and a special form will be filled out at the office.
As well, please ensure that if you need to pick up your child from school that you send a note with your child.
Students are required to take the school bus home if notification from the parent is not received.
SPECIAL AUTHORIZATION FOR STUDENT
TRANSPORTATION
From time to time, we understand that due to daycare reasons, students must go to another residence after school.
This involves travelling on another school bus.
PLEASE NOTE: Students MUST have a note from their parents indicating which bus they are traveling on, the name of the student and the bus stop.
As well, please
NOTE, this service is for EMERGENCY daycare or babysitting purposes only, not for homework or socializing at the end of the day.
Parents must arrange for student pickup if this is the case.
All transportation notes MUST be received in the office by morning recess in order to process the appropriate paperwork as we bus approximately 600 students a day.
BUS SAFETY PATROLLERS
St.
Cornelius School has implemented Bus Safety
Patrollers again for this year.
These students have volunteered for these positions and received training at the Safety Village from Peel Regional Police on
September 26 th .
Please note that not all buses have a
Safety Patroller as there were no volunteers on certain buses.
Safety patrollers have been selected for their maturity, leadership and responsibility.
They are counted on to be role models for appropriate behaviour at all times on the bus.
Safety patrollers are there to assist the driver in an emergency according to their training.
KISS & RIDE ZONE
Thank you very much to those families who follow our Kiss ‘n Ride expectations to keep our students safe.
In order to allow for proper traffic flow, we ask that parents allow their children to get out of the vehicle on their own on the sidewalk side.
They will be safely escorted across the sidewalk by the teacher on duty.
If you wish, you may pull into one of the empty visitors’ parking spots or at R.F.
Hall
Secondary School.
Please do not park on Innis Lake Road and expect your child to walk across buses and cars.

YEAR OF FAITH
Pope Benedict XVI announced a Year of Faith that would be observed by the universal Church beginning last October through to the end of November.
Throughout his pontificate, the Holy Father has expressed his concern with the decline in faith in so many Christian nations, and the many challenges that the Church faces in proclaiming her faith.
As he described in his Apostolic Letter, Porta Fidei, the Year of
Faith will be a time to address the “profound crisis of
faith that has affected many people.”
Gr. 3 & 6 2012-13 EQAO
Parents of children currently in grades 4 and 7 who
attended St.
Cornelius School last year will be receiving their EQAO individual results within the next few weeks.
CANDY DRIVE –Nov. 1 st -Nov. 8 th
Malnutrition shuts down the body’s digestive track and often children cannot eat, even when regular healthy food is given to them.
However, the doctors have discovered that candy with its high content of sugar can start the digestive track working.
This allows these children to consume food, thus, saving their lives.
Please help us save children’s lives.
The organization
running this is Dr.
Simone’s Canadian Food for Children.
Please collect and drop off hard candy and anything that can be stored in a railway container to school and we will bring to St.
John’s Albion Church.
SCHOOL LOCKDOWN DRILL
It is a policy in Dufferin ‐ Peel CDSB that all of its schools conduct a “Lockdown Procedure” twice a year.
This will be initiated should an emergency exist on school property or in the surrounding neighborhood.
Part of the process is to practice the “Lockdown Procedures” as we practice our Fire Drills.
On Friday, October 18 th , we will be conducting a Lockdown Drill with our staff and students.
The procedures that we will follow have been recommended by the Board.
Students will be instructed that when they hear the announcements “Initiate
Lockdown Procedure” followed by the repeated ringing of the bell, all staff and students will follow the following actions:
a) All students and staff inside the building will remain in
their classrooms.
b) Students or staff in the hallways or washrooms will be expected to go to the closest classroom.
Students and staff will remain in the classroom until further instructions are given.
c) All students and staff who are outside the building are to quickly move as far away from the building as possible and remain there until further instructions are
provided.
d) The drill will be conducted with as much sensitivity as
possible in order not to cause undue concern with students.
If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the school.

CATHOLIC SCHOOL COUNCIL
Parent Council is looking forward to another great year at St.
Cornelius School!
A HUGE thank you to all of you who participated in the events, activities and fundraising through the last school year – without you, we would not have been able to fund an incredible array of student programming, education, supplies and fun events throughout the school year.
A special WELCOME to the new families in our incredible community!
We are very excited to ensure the same quality of programming, education and supplies can be offered through the hard work of our volunteer group and through the generosity of those who participate in our programs.
NEW BOARD POLICY CHANGE AFFECTING
ALL PARENT VOLUNTEERS
All parent volunteers are required to complete a Criminal Record Check
(CRC) through the local OPP.
This new policy will affect your ability to volunteer for excursions such as field trips, helping to drive students to sports events, assisting in the classroom.
We recommend that if you plan to volunteer during the 2013 ‐ 14 school year, that
you work towards completing your CRC.
Please pick up an application at the office and provide two pieces of identification (note that SIN and Health cards are not acceptable).
Please see Ms.
Badger.
A note that this process does require a number of weeks to complete.
DONATION FOR OUR LIBRARY
The BBQ was a great success!
Thank you to all for attending, and participating in this incredible community event that brings together families in the school for introductions and, of course food!
A special thank you to all the parent volunteers who pulled together to make this a possibility – your commitment is appreciated!
There are a number of great initiatives being put forward for the 2013/2014 school year – come out to our meeting on Wednesday, October 2 nd , 2013 at 6:30 p.m.
to learn more and participate in shaping the year to come.
We are in need of new "comfy reading furniture" for our library.
If you have a gently used smaller sized couch or comfy chairs (preferably leather or vinyl) that you would like to donate to the library, please contact the school.
Thank you!
Keep an eye out for our upcoming QSP fundraiser – the magazine subscription program that helps to build revenue for the school to fund many programs – past funding has included: sports uniforms, music equipment, classroom materials, and artists and scientists and the school programs just to name a few.
Our kids are worth it, and our council is dedicated to organizing events and activities that make these things possible, though, none of it is possible without YOU, and we are truly grateful for your participation which ensures the existence of such offerings throughout the school year.
VIRTUE OF THE MONTH- EMPATHY
God has given us the ability to form connections with each other—to live together.
Empathy helps us to connect and live together in safe, caring, inclusive communities.
Empathy refers to the ability to identify with and feel other people’s concerns.
What Empathetic People Do:
• Listen attentively
• Watch people’s body language
• Notice and respond when someone is upset
The council is seeking volunteers to assist with fundraising events, special lunch days, and milk delivery.
If you do have some time to dedicate to this wonderful cause, please contact Melanie Johannink through email at johannink@me.com
for more information.
Please note all volunteers must have a
Criminal Reference Check.
We look forward to communicating with you throughout the school year!
• Can name her/his feelings
• Can see a situation from another person’s point of view
• Know that different people may feel differently about the same thing.

SAFE SCHOOLS FOCUS FOR OCTOBER:
Bullying is Unacceptable
In October classroom teachers and students will focus on the definition of bullying.
The key message is “bullying is unacceptable”.
Through various activities the students will understand the vast array of behaviours that can be bullying
(physical, verbal, social) and explore the emotional impact of those behaviours on others.
Students develop the ability to understand and apply the definition of bullying through constant exposure, repeated use and consistency.
Using the same definition of bullying throughout the school and at home allows both students and adults to more effectively prevent and deal with bullying situations.
Bullying is: Being mean to others, on purpose, to hurt them or their feelings.
Bullying Behaviour: is intended to hurt, is repeated and involves unequal power and control.
Tips for Parents: ‐ review the definition of bullying with your children (see the school policy document for more detail on the definition) ‐ talk with younger children about inside and outside hurts ‐ talk with older children about intimidation, gossip, rumours and cyber bullying.
Encourage children to share their feelings about bullying behaviours that they have experienced, witnessed or engaged in.
