FROM OUR PRESIDENT
Dear Members,
Du r i n g t h e A m e r i c a n
Colonial period between 1636
and 1769, nine institutions for
higher learning were founded
in the thirteen colonies. Seven
of them later formed the
Ivy League, Harvard, Yale,
University of Pennsylvania,
Princeton, Columbia, Brown and Dartmouth. All had
some religious affiliation and were closed to women.
In 1865 Cornell joined their ranks and became
the first truly American University without religious
or gender restrictions. In 1948, Brandeis also become
a great American university. Founded by the Jewish
Community, it is open to all. It is co-educational, nonsectarian with high academic standards and is recognized
for its adherence to Social Justice and community service.

Arleen Roberts Brandeis National Committee provides overall support
to Brandeis and continues to raise money for the libraries
and secondary campaigns such as scientific research for
neurodegenerative diseases. This year’s new Scholarship
Fund Campaign seeks to raise $1 Million over two years.
The high costs of a quality education are onerous for our
students’ families. Scholarships help remove financial
obstacles and are essential in enabling gifted students to
attend Brandeis and pursue their educational dreams.
Who knows how many students will generate new
knowledge and make the world a better place?

Summer Study Group Guide
1. ARAB WORLD IN CRISIS
Wednesdays, 1:30pm
Leader: Robert Rabil
Location: SCCC
Two Sessions: June 8, July 27
This two lecture series explores the current dynamics in the Middle East focusing on a) the U.S. led campaign against ISIS and
its implications for U. S. and Israel’s national security and b) U. S.-Saudi-lranian relations and their ramifications for the region
in general and Israel in particular.
Dr. Robert Rabil is a tenured Professor of Middle Eastern Studies at FAU. He received his Ph.D in Near Eastern and Judaic
Studies from Brandeis University. He has served as Chief of Emergency of the Red Cross in Lebanon and was Project Manager
of the US State Department-funded Iraq Research and Documentation Project. He has written extensively on Syria, Iraq,
US-Arab Relations, Israel, reform in the Arab World, radical Islam and terrorism.
2. JEWISH CONFRONTATION WITH MODERNITY
Mondays, 1:30pm
Leader: Eli Kavon
Location: SCCC
Three Sessions: June 27, July 25, Aug 15
June 27: “The Future of Jerusalem: Divided City or United Capital”--Rabbi Eli Kavon will explore the challenges faced
by Jerusalem today. The city is home to large populations of Arabs and Ultra-Orthodox Jews who are either non-Zionist or
anti-Zionist. Jews yearned for a united Jerusalem for 2000 years. Can Jerusalem truly be a bargaining chip in negotiations based
on the failed record of “land for peace” that has been a reality in Israel for more than twenty years?
July 25: “American Jews, American Wars”--ln this class Rabbi Eli Kavon will trace the history of American Jews who
served their country from 1776 to today. This is a fascinating chapter in American-Jewish history dating back to the Revolution.
Jews in America have played a seminal role in either fighting in wars or opposing them. This promises to be an eye-opener.
August 15: “Women in Judaism”--What was the status of women in the patriarchal Jewish societies of the past? How have
attitudes changed over the past century? Rabbi Eli Kavon will discuss the role of women in Judaism from the Bible to today. What
have modern scholars revealed about the private spiritual life of the Jewish woman in the ancient and medieval periods? What
will the future hold for women’s participation in the public life of the synagogue and study hall? All these issues will be explored.
Rabbi Eli Kavon is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Columbia University, where he studied Comparative Religion and History.
He received his Master’s Degree in Jewish Studies from the Spertus Institute in Chicago and was ordained as Rabbi by the
Rabbinical Academy of Woodmere, NY. Rabbi’s essays have appeared in the Jerusalem Post and the Jerusalem Report. He is
a regular contributor to the Zionist journal Midstream. In June 2011, Rabbi Kavon presented an academic paper in China at an
international symposium on Western Religion hosted by Nanjing University.
3. MASTERS OF MODERNISM
Mondays, 1:30pm
Leader: Terryl Lawrence
Location: SCCC
Three Sessions: June 20, July 18, Aug 8
Masters of Modernism: from a historical perspective Van Gogh, Gauguin and their followers stood out by giving
Expressionism a stunning beginning.
June 20 - Paul Gauguin - Today he is recognized as a highly influential founding father of Modern Art.
July 18 ·Vincent van Gogh - The colors that drove him
Aug 8 - The Fauves - A style characterized by intense, unnatural color and free decorative form.

has won many awards ... including a National Grant in the Humanities for research in Art History. Currently she is on the staff of
LLS at FAU. She also is a Professor at the Digital Media Arts College Boca Raton, teaching drawing, art history and mythology.

4. OPEN BOOK
Wednesdays, 1:30pm
Lecturer: Gloria Shapiro
Two Sessions: June 22, July 20
Location: SCCC
JUNE 22: Frank Lloyd Wright was an egotistical, selfish, aggravating, demanding ... genius. America’s greatest architect was
also incredibly charming and full of fun. In T. C. Boyle’s stunning book “The Women”, with its high drama, we learn why four
different women, three wives and one mistress, tied their fortunes to his star and never regretted it for one minute.
JULY 20: “The Chief” by David Nasaw tells the story of William Randolph Hearst a media giant who had the power to
influence public opinion and world events. We’ll hear about the publishing world, his mistress Marion Davies, the movies, and
his obsession with building San Simeon, America’s grandest castle. The program depicts a man - not always admirable- but a
reflection of his time. The original patter song at the end is a long remembered highlight.
Gloria Shapiro has been informing and entertaining audiences for years. She is a graduate of Queens College majoring in
Speech and Theater, with post graduate work at Columbia University. She was on the faculty of Rutgers University and is the
author of two memoirs. Her distinctive style and delivery have made her a much sought after speaker in Southern Florida.
5. OUTSTANDING EUROPEAN NOVELS
Fridays, 1:30pm
Leader: Joyce Reider
Location: SCCC
Three Sessions: June 3, July 8, Aug 5
June 3: The Door by Magda Szabo
July 8: Chronicle in Stone by Ismail Kadare
Aug. 5: Transit by Anna Seghers
Joyce Reider has been leading study groups for many years. She brings her national reputation and lively intellect into the
classroom, ranging widely over the history, culture and literary merit of each work. So read, be stimulated and enjoy.
6. INFAMOUS FEMALE CRIMINALS
Tuesdays, 1:30pm
Leader. Myrna Goldberger
Location: SCCC
Sessions: June 14, July 12, Aug 23
Men may be more numerous than women in the commission of a crime, but women have the monopoly when it comes to
intriguing stories, weird events and deceptive strategies in the preparation and carrying out of a crime. From the tale of
Griselda Blanco, the “cocaine godmother”, to Leona Helmsley, the “Queen of Mean”, to Patty Hearst and the SLA, to Ruth
Snyder, the perpetrator of the “dumbest crime in the 20th century”, these women, known and not so well-known, occupy a
judicial presence in American history.
June 14 - Ruth Snyder Murder Case; Candace Mossier and the Florida Homicide
July 12 - Lisa Novak; Aileen Wuormos, Diane Downs
Aug 23 - Patty Hearst; Susan Smith, Andrea Yates
Myrna Goldberger was educated at the University of Maryland, Loyola College and Johns Hopkins University. She has
been an educator, lecturer, and performer for over 50 years. She is currently a lecturer for the Lifelong Learning Society at
FAU , Boca Raton and Jupiter campuses. In addition, she presents programs to organizations, communities, special interest
groups and private functions. Myrna is characterized as “ dynamic, charismatic and well prepared” by her students.
7. JEWISH ROOTS
Wednesday, 1:30pm
Lecturer: Rose Feinberg
Location: SCCC
One Session: June 29
Did you Know They had Jewish Roots?
The program highlights famous people with at least one Jewish parent, with some surprises. Pictures and verbal clues help
the audience guess each identity before more information is given.
Dr. Rose Feinberg has been a presenter at many programs for organizations and groups during the last 30 years. She earned
her Doctorate of Education from Boston University. She was a school administrator in Massachusetts. Dr. Feinberg was an
adjunct professor at several MA universities and also at FAU.

8. OPERA A LA MODE
Wednesday, 1:30pm
Lecturer: Giuseppe Albanese
Three Sessions: June 15, July 13, Aug 3
Location: SCCC
June 15: Hollywood Goes To The Opera - Opera used as incidental music and for emotional impact in Hollywood movie
soundtrack is a compelling phenomenon. This documentary was featured at the 1998 Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival.
July 13 : Mario Lanza: American Caruso - The highs and lows of the remarkable career that turned out to be short and
tragic yet unforgettable.
Aug. 3: Maria Callas:Her Life and Music - The tortured, controversial career of the great singing actress is the stuff of
legends; with rare interviews and performance segments.
Heralded by his students as a “dynamic and learned scholar of the opera” Giuseppe Albanese received his degree in history
from the University of Vermont. In 1990, after 5 years of intensive study, he began teaching the Joy of Opera, a course that
garnered accolades from Life Long Learning students. Maestro Albanese was the recipient of the Lifelong Learning Society
Excellence in Teaching Award in 2000.
9. MASTER STROKES
Thursdays, 1:30pm
Leader: Arline Peartree
Location:SCCC
Three Sessions:June 9, July 7, Aug 18
These three slide lectures deal with the History of Women Artists, Picasso, and Artworks from the Museum of Modern Art
in NYC. Much of current art is complex and alien to the average viewer. Ms. Peartree will explore the techniques and styles
of these exciting artists.
June 9: History of Women Artists: The ninety artists in the slide talks range from traditional to modern. Among those included
are: Louise Nevelson, Gabriel Munter, Alice Neel, Nicki Ste. Dephalle, Georgia O’Keefe, Mary Cassatt, Paul Becker Modersohn.
July 7: Picasso: Picasso and Matisse are considered the most important artists of the Twentieth Century. Picasso revolutionized art
by destroying all protocol of what a painting must be. He used realism, surrealism, cubism and indefinable styles for his work. He
borrowed ideas from many cultures and transformed the shapes into modern ideas. He ignored the Paris Salon (the epitome of taste)
and reinvented art for all time ... We will see work from his Blue, Rose, Cubist, Surrealist Periods .... and also Ceramics and Drawings.
Aug 18: Museum of Modern Art in New York City has been an example of innovation and excellence for many modern
artists. Critics have developed terms like op art, expressionism, concept art, collage, photorealism, pop art, collage and
other words to express outrageous ideas to define the artworks. These slides engage a hundred artists of different styles.
Included are: Kandinsky, Klee, David Hockney, Pissarro, Elizabeth Murray, Seurat, Redon, Prendergast, Mondrian, Wolf
Kahn, Matisse, Gaugin, Chagall.
Arline Peartree, an internationally famous painter and steel sculptor, has been lecturing about artists and their techniques
in Florida for the last fifteen years. She has taught art history at Lynn University, Broward Adult Learning Program and at
Palm Beach Community College Adult Learning programs. She is also active providingorganizations and private residential

COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROGRAM
‘WANT TO BECOME A COLLECTOR?”
WELCOME TO CAPS OF LOVE: HELPING THE DISABLED
The goal of our non-profit organization is to help the disabled.
“Caps Of Love” is the only US affiliate with the international charity ‘’Bouchons D’Amour.” By recycling plastic caps, we
raise money to buy wheelchairs for disabled children. This also has an environmental benefit as discarded caps are put in our
landfills or incinerated and harm the earth if they are not recycled. Plastic caps are a different grade of plastic from the bottles
and are valuable in bulk. They can be sold to companies using recycled “post-consumer” plastic to create new products such
as plastic shipping pallets, plastic park benches, plastic paint cans and many other items.
Nondiscrimination Policy
“Caps of Love” does not discriminate or support on the basis of race, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic
status, national origin, or physical or developmental disability.
Have you ever thought about how much you could change things just by not throwing out your plastic caps?
OR
Collect soda tabs for Ronald McDonald House and help sick children and their families. The tabs are what make “Pop Tab
Bracelets”. These unusual, fun bracelets sell for $5.00 to $15.00 and make a real fashion statement! They are the brainchild of
a local teenager, Lexi Masciarella. For more information contact: Arleen Roberts at arlollypops@comcast.net
