At-A-Glance
Cisco Prime Network Registrar
Cisco Prime™ Network Registrar is an integrated,
high-performance, highly scalable Dynamic Host
Configuration Protocol (DHCP), Domain Name System
(DNS), and IP address management (IPAM) (DDI)
solution. The solution plays an important role in service
activation for data, voice-over-IP (VoIP), and mobile
services. For cable providers, the solution provides
reliable, scalable DNS and DHCP services for millions
of devices and forms the basis of a DOCSIS® cable
modem provisioning system.
What Problems Does It Help Solve?
With the exhaustion of IPv4 addresses, service providers
and enterprises are focusing on IPv6 and require a fullfeatured DDI solution that will support both protocols.
Cisco Prime Network Registrar allows dual-stack
deployments on a single server and helps to automate
the transition from IPv4 to IPv6. This, in turn, mitigates IP
address scarcity, facilitates deployment of new revenuegenerating services, and lowers IP address management
overhead.
With the continual deployment of new IP services and
technologies, the increasing number of connected
users, and the explosive growth in connected devices,
today’s complex networks require a full-featured,
automated IPAM solution. Cisco Prime Network Registrar
IPAM provides a scalable system to plan, track, and
manage the full lifecycle of IP address space — helping
to eliminate operating inefficiencies, unnecessary costs,
and delayed service activation.
Cisco Prime Network Registrar
The solution includes the following integrated
components — all supporting both IPv4 and IPv6:
• A single DHCP server for device network access
with support for high availability DNS. Features
include DHCP safe fail over, unsurpassed avalanche
prevention to reduce downtime after network outages,
IPv6 address prefix stability, and extension support
that allows network operators to alter and customize
DHCP server operations.
• A single DNS server for IP address translation and
service delivery with support for high availability DNS.
• A DNS caching server that supports DNS Security
Extensions (DNSSEC) to prevent cache poisoning and
other attacks and provides validation that DNS data
has been signed.
• A powerful, comprehensive IPAM system to automate
and manage all IP address requirements.
What Are the Benefits of Cisco Prime
Network Registrar?
• Fast and scalable: The solution has the ability to
assign more than 47,000 DHCP leases per second
and is also the industry’s most scalable DHCP
server—supporting 50 million-plus devices in a single
customer deployment. The recursive, extremely fast,
DNS caching server offers significant acceleration of
DNS query throughput.
• Centralized, automated management: The
IPAM component allows for a single point of
data aggregation and delegation to synchronize
information, eliminate many manual and error-prone
tasks, and reduce complexity. The IPAM component
integrates IPv4 and IPv6 information and supports
multi vendor DNS and DHCP servers. With the ability
to discover, track, allocate, assign, and reclaim IP
addresses automatically, organizations can easily
achieve significant operating efficiencies.
• Flexibility and control: Network operators
can organize IP address space according to a
deployment’s topology, geography, and router
association for greater administrative simplicity. Welldefined administrator roles, controls, and reports
promote accountability and automate audit tracking.
• Cloud support: Capabilities include a secure
multitenant environment and a web-based service
portal for tenant administration when configuring
DHCP and DNS.
