Consumption & Costs
Costs
• Energy Costs
• Water
> €3m (€8,000 per day)
> €300k (€1,000 per day)
Consumption
• 13 million units (kWh) of Electricity (1700 households)
• 15 million units (KWh) of Natural Gas
• 140 million litres of water (56 Olympic swimming pools)
• Electricity accounts for 70% of energy costs
-
69% of C02 emissions (approx. 9000 tonnes)
• Water charges due to rise significantly in coming years

Sustainability/Environmental
Energy Reduction & Sustainability Projects 2007-2010
• Water Saving Measures
– Water metering project; >20 meters across campus
– Replacement of 40% of cold water mains pipe work in 2010
– Active leak detection program, internal and external
– Installation of water savers in cisterns

Why Energy Management
•
Economic benefits - Significant cost savings can be achieved considering
annual energy bill > €3m
– Savings will be ring fenced for further sustainable projects.
•
Environmental benefits - environmental benefits through significant
reduction in greenhouse gases
– “The economy is a wholly owned subsidiary of the environment, not the other way
around” - Gaylord Nelson, Earth Day founder
•
Legislation - The public sector has been challenged to take the lead in
demonstrating energy efficiency savings.
– Ireland’s vision for 2020 is a 20% reduction in energy use,
– but for the public sector the improvement must be 33%,
– a target that calls for management commitment at the top and the broader
engagement of all. (NEEAP)
•
Other benefits – Improved comfort levels for all & nicer working
environments in existing and new buildings (USGBC LEED)

Water Consumption Benchmarks
• 140,000,000 litres per annum used in NUIG
• (equivalent to 56 Olympic swimming pools)
• In Ireland:
– average consumption is 148 litres per person per day (54,000
litres per annum)
– Average of 50 litres per person in business (11,000 litres per
annum)
• A tap dripping once a second wastes about 10 m3 or
10,000 litres of water a year.
• A power shower uses almost 125 litres of water in 5
minutes. That's a massive 250 litres in 10 minutes!

Water Saving tips
• Make sure taps are not left running.
• Make sure all taps are drip free

What Can you
Switch OFF?
The ‘Small’ Things:
•
•
•
•
•
•
Computers & Monitors
Printers
Photocopiers
Lights
Fans
Electric heaters

Popular Misconception
"Computer screens in "screen saver" mode save
energy."
• UNTRUE: when a computer screen is in "screen saver"
mode, it does not save any energy. Screens should be
turned off rather than leaving them in screen saver mode.

Switch OFF the Bigger Things
•
•
•
•
Lights
Water Heaters
Electric Heaters
Air conditions units
THESE CAN BE 10 TIMES MORE ENERGY CONSUMING
THAN THE SMALL THINGS.

Lighting

Popular Misconception
"Switching off fluorescent lights costs more than
leaving them switched on."
• UNTRUE: if a fluorescent light is not required, it is always
more efficient to turn it off than to leave it on. (This might
have been true for older lights.)

Heating

© 2010 Enerit Ltd.
Heating
• Windows left open – close
– If possible, keep track of repeated instances.
• If electric heater is on switch it off
– Do not unplug from wall as may be on a timer.

There are approx 500 electric
heaters throughout NUIG

Storage Heaters
• INPUT
– control tells the heater how much heat to
store up, during the night
– setting it on 4 (out of 6) means the elements
will shut off when the box is 2/3 full.
• OUTPUT
– control tells the heater how much heat to let
out into the room

Storage Heaters
Tip
– If your room is cold by the evening, check that
the OUTPUT is turned down overnight and
the INPUT is set high enough
