From Principal Verdone
Dear Holly Lane families,
As we turn the corner to the final quarter of the school year and observe the flowers
beginning to bloom, we are all reminded of all the growth that our Holly Lane students
have experienced this year.
Our kindergarten, first and second grade students are becoming better readers and
writers as they grow in their reading and writing skills each day through our Fundations
program. Our teachers have participated in ongoing professional development to learn
the techniques and strategies to implement this multi-sensory reading program that has
helped our students to achieve success.
I am very proud of our second graders who recently performed a wonderful musical under
the direction of our music teacher, Mrs. Alison Gregory. The students sang and moved to
lively tunes that provided entertainment to the entire Holly Lane community.
We also enjoyed our Young Author’s Night Out on March 21. The first through fourth
graders who participated in this writing enrichment opportunity demonstrated their
creativity and writing skills by sharing the books that they have worked on for the last
several months. Student-created books are currently in the Holly Lane library for
students, staff and families to peruse.
Our third and fourth grade students are in the midst of their final preparations for our
Ohio Achievement Assessments (OAA) that will take place April 23-27. Our teachers and
students are always focused on learning and achievement, and I am confident that the
results on these state assessments will allow our students to show what they know.
I wish everyone a safe and fun Spring Break.

Holly Lane Art Show - Save the Date!
The Holly Lane Art Show is coming soon. This year’s spectacular takes place on
on Wednesday, May 1, from 6:00 PM-8:00 PM. The theme is “Art Unifies the
World”.
Volunteers are needed to mount the art starting after Spring Break. Mounting art
work is typically done during or immediately following the school day and times are
flexible. Assistance will also be needed to hang the art the day before the show.
This will be done in a morning and afternoon shift approximately 3-4 hours each
shift.
If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Melissa Chatterton
(melissa.chatterton@gmail.com) or Deneen Burrows (djdoane@aol.com). All
assistance even for an hour or two is greatly appreciated.

Music a la Mode, April 12th & 13th!
Music a la Mode is quickly approaching, and Music Boosters members are busy gathering
items for our annual raffle, held in the cafeteria throughout the day. Many students, parents,
and grandparents who attend look forward to purchasing tickets in hopes of winning one of
the great prizes! Please consider putting together a basket or donating an item to help raise
funds for the PreK-12 music programs in Westlake. Past baskets have had themes such as
"Movie Night"(several new DVDs and snacks), "Tribe Fever"(Indians jersey, hat, and flag), and
"Date Night"(theater tickets and gift card to restaurant). Don't have time to put together a gift
basket? Area gift cards and individual items are welcome, too! If you would like to donate a
basket or item or would like more information, please contact Kathie McNeilly
(kathie.mcneilly@gmail.com). We are also looking for volunteers to help prepare donated
items for the raffle. If you are interested, please let Kathie know. Thank you, and we look
forward to seeing you at the 2013 Music a la Mode!

Walking Club
FAQ
Who is invited to attend? This walking club has been started by Dover PTA
Health and Safety Committee and is open to any parents or staff in the school
district. If you are attending we welcome you to bring other family members,
neighbors or friends.
Do I have to attend every session? No, though we are looking for a core
group of walkers to attend every session for constant support, you are welcome
to come only on the days that work for your schedule. We encourage you to
come as often as possible!
How to I find out where the Walking Club is meeting each week? At the first
session I will hand out a flyer with our starting points for the month. Weekly
updates will go out through the schools via eblast. You can also check the
DOVER PTA website.
What if the weather is bad? We plan to walk rain or shine. Come dressed for
the weather. If weather is severe we will meet at the Rec Center and walk the
track or the treadmills.
Is this speed walking? It is whatever you want it to be. Usually large groups
end up breaking off into sub-groups. There will be walkers at various paces from
speed to stroll. It is your choice!
Do we have to track our steps? No, pedometers will not be handed out
however feel free to bring one if you wish.
What if I can only do part of the path? You will know the path when we start
out. If for any reason you need to only walk part way, you are welcome to turn
around when needed.
Can I bring younger children? Strollers are welcome if that fits your needs.
Whatever makes the walk more pleasant for you!

Dollars for Scholars Thank You
A big THANK YOU goes to many for supporting 2013 Dollars For Scholars! It takes a
tremendous amount of teamwork to put on the Westlake Council of PTA’s Dollars For
Scholars. Each year we are very proud of the SEVERAL scholarships we are able to award.
This is possible by the great support from many area businesses. Please remember them
as you are looking for services, gifts, food and more!
Many more Thanks go to our Fantastic teams! Without you our event would not happen!
You are the “Stars” of the event. Great job goes to the Staff team lead by Team Manager
Ben Hodge! Put another “W” in the books for the staff! Thank you to all the coaches who
voted in making the 2013 Senior team. Truly there is some amazing talent there! Coach
Weiss as usual did an awesome job in coaching the Senior team.
To the Delegates- We cannot say enough about how awesome you all were in getting the
word out! You were on your “game” this year. Many units sold out all their tickets! This is a
big portion of making our goal! Also, as we looked around we saw so many families at
Dollars this year. You really were getting the word out! We had a record attendance! Thank
you so much!
To Kim Mather and her Counters- Super job in keeping the money accounted for down to
the “penny”!! To have all the cash boxes and money collected, counted, tabulated and
deposited is no small job. Your team really rocked! Can’t wait for our numbers update!
To the FANTASTIC Concession Crew- What a well organized team. You really kept the
crowd happy! Karen and Bobbie- I will always want to be on your team! Thank you!
To all the wonderful volunteers! We are so thankful for your support!
would not be possible!
Without you we DFS
To Tony – our true partner. All your extra work and ideas really made DFS so fun! Thank
you!
To Megan Moutoux- just having you there helping and supporting is always going to be a
great time!! Thanks for all your help with the programs and all the little things!
Definitely a job well done! We really appreciate your great work.
And to the many whom we may have missed or asked to be anonymous your support means
just as much ~ Thank you!
