Part 630 - BENCHMARK SOILS
630.00 Definition and Purpose.
(a) A benchmark soil is one of large extent, one
that holds a key position in the soil classification
system, one for which there is a large amount of
data, or one that has special significance to
farming, engineering, forestry, ranching,
recreational development, urban development,
wetland restoration, or other uses. The cost of
investigation and the large number of
combinations of soil uses and management
practices preclude laboratory and field studies of
all soils; therefore, studies of benchmark soils are
essential. A benchmark soil represents other soils.
Knowledge of the properties and behavior of
benchmark soils contributes to the understanding
and interpretation of other soils with similar
properties. This knowledge is important to soil
technology and the use of soil surveys.
(b) Benchmark soils help to focus the
investigative effort on soils that have the greatest
potential for extending collected data and resultant
interpretations to other soils. Lists of benchmark
soils are useful in planning many kinds of soil
studies. Included studies are physical and
chemical properties, fertility, crop adaptation and
yield, range plant adaptation and yield, erodibility
factors for wind and water, and the effectiveness
of agronomic practices, such as minimum tillage,
on yields and soil erosion.
630.01 Policy and Responsibilities.
(a) The state soil scientist is responsible for:
-- proposing changes and additions to the
benchmark soils list,
-- ensuring interdisciplinary input in the
selection of benchmark soils,
-- ensuring input from cooperators in the
selection of benchmark soils, and
-- encouraging the use of benchmark soils in
organizing and planning the research by
state agricultural experiment stations and
other agencies.
(b) The MLRA office is responsible for:
-- exchanging information on benchmark
soils with state offices,
-- providing the list to the National Soil
Survey Center,
-- maintaining a file of data for benchmark
soils that are on the MLRA list,
-- coordinating benchmark soils with the state
soil scientists in states that share the major
land resource area, and
-- focusing long-range plans for soil survey
investigations on benchmark soils and their
characteristics.
(c) The National Soil Survey Center is
responsible for:
-- providing guidance in the selection of
benchmark soils, and
-- making the list available to researchers in
experiment stations, highway departments,
and other organizations that conduct
research on soils.
630.02 Criteria for Selecting
Benchmark Soils.
(a) The soil series that represent the range of
soil conditions within a major land resource area
serve as benchmark soils. The criteria are:
(1) Extent. The soil series that are selected
as benchmark soils are commonly of large extent;
they are normally extensive soils in each major
land resource area. This kind of representation
ensures that any collected data are widely
applicable. Soil series of moderate or small extent
that are designated as benchmark soils represent
the soils within the major land resource area.
(2) Key soils. Certain soils occupy key
positions in the soil classification system, and
research on these can be easily applied to other
soils. Benchmark soils represent the extensive soil
series in classes of the higher categories of the soil
classification system.
(3) Important soils. Certain soils are
especially important because of their use for
specialty crops or engineering purposes. If these
soils are essential to the understanding of and
(430-VI-NSSH, 2002)
630-2 Part 630 - Benchmark Soils
interpretations for specialty crops, engineering, or
other uses, they become benchmark soils. The
number of these soils is small, perhaps two or
three per state, and they are a second priority of
benchmark soils.
(4) Major land resource areas. Each major
land resource area has at least one benchmark soil.
(5) Existing data. Soil series for which there
are large amounts of data have preference over
equally suitable series for which there are less
data.
630.03 Lists of Benchmark Soils.
(b) The benchmark soil series location is
accessible in the official soil series database.
630.05 List of Benchmark Soil Data
Needs.
Each state develops a comprehensive list of the
kinds of data or information that are useful in
predicting the behavior of the kinds of soil in the
state. The list is an inventory of the adequacy of
available information on the benchmark soils of
the state. Such an inventory helps plan for studies
of soil properties, qualities, and behavior.
(a) Much of the research on soil properties and
soil behavior is planned and conducted by
individuals who are interested in a state or a part
of a state. For that reason, a list of first and
second priority benchmark soils is developed for
each major land resource area. The list includes
the most extensive soils in each of the major land
resource areas, soils that represent key positions in
the soil classification system, and important soils.
630.06 Managing Benchmark Soil
Data.
(b) The number of benchmark soils should be
small but representative because of the need for
comprehensive sets of data. The number of
benchmark soils on a state list varies according to
the size of the state and the diversity and
complexity of soils within the state.
(b) Each state maintains a file of data for each
benchmark soil on the state. The file contains a
record of investigative activities on benchmark
soils and the location of the data.
(a) The national soil characterization database
which is maintained by the National Soil Survey
Center includes data for benchmark soils. In
addition, soil survey investigations reports identify
benchmark soils.
(c) Access and sort the list of benchmark soils
by using the Soil Series Classification (SC) or
Official Soil Series Descriptions (OSD) data
access search routine. These files are on the soils
web site at http://ortho.ftw.nrcs.usda.gov/osd/osd.html
and http://ortho.ftw.nrcs.usda.gov/osd/sc.html.
630.04 Designation of Benchmark
Soil Location.
(a) A benchmark location within the major land
resource area is identified for each soil series
designated as a benchmark soil. The soil series
type location and the benchmark location are the
same if feasible. When a new type location is
selected for a soil series that is designated as a
benchmark soil, consider its permanency and its
suitability as a benchmark location. Sites that
remain accessible for many years allow follow-up
sampling.

630-4 Part 630 - Benchmark Soils
Exhibit 630-1 Sample Narrative for Benchmark Soils.
BETA SERIES ---- a member of the fine, smectitic, frigid Argiaquic Argialbolls family.
The Beta series is extensive in the Central and Northern Dark Brown Glaciated Plains, the
Central and Northern Black Glaciated Plains, and the Red River Valley of the North, in Major
Land Resource Areas 53, 55, and 56, respectively. The series is more than 250,000 acres in
extent. The Beta soils are deep and formed in alluvium derived from glaciolacustrine deposits
and till in depressions and potholes on till plains and lake plains. Knowledge of the properties,
qualities, and behavior of the Beta soils is useful in understanding (1) the Wet Meadow range
site; (2) the effect of wetness and ponding on crop yields, especially small grains, sugar beets,
and sunflowers; (3) the importance of the soils as a sink for nutrients and pesticides; (4) the
importance of the soils in the development and maintenance of regional ground water; (5) the
importance of trapping runoff and its effect on stream overflow; (6) the importance of early
season ponding to waterfowl production; and (7) the development of albic and argillic horizons
in a geographic area where these horizons are generally not observed. Where drained, the Beta
soils are Prime Farmland. The type location of the Beta series is about 5 miles north and 3 miles
east of Beta, Any State, 1,500 feet south and 400 feet west of the northeast corner of sec. 10, T.
136 N., R. 56 W. USGS Dinnebito Valley topographic quadrangle; lat. 39 degrees 45 minutes 15
seconds N. and long. 93 degrees 15 minutes 30 seconds W.
GAMMA SERIES ---- a member of the fine-loamy, mixed, superactive, frigid Typic
Argiustolls family, a family that is more than 3,000,000 acres in extent. The Alpha series is
extensive with more than 200,000 acres in the Rolling Soft Shale Plains, Major Land Resource
Area 54. The Alpha soils are 20 to 40 inches deep to soft bedrock and formed in material
weathered from sandstone, siltstone, and shale. Knowledge of the properties, qualities, and
behavior of the Alpha soils is useful in understanding (1) the penetration of roots and the
movement of water into the soft bedrock, (2) the suitability of similar soils for small grains, (3)
the use of soils with soft bedrock for septic tank absorption fields, (4) the Silty range site, (5) and
the use of soils with soft bedrock for building sites. The Alpha soils are underlain by strippable
coal, and the knowledge of soil properties, qualities, and behavior is important for the
development of effective soil reclamation measures. Alpha soils with 0 to 9 percent slope are
designated Additional Farmlands of Statewide Importance. The type location of the Alpha series
is about 3 miles north and 2 miles west of Alpha, Any State, 2,300 feet east and 180 feet south of
the northwest corner of sec. 2, T. 131 N., R. 103 W. USGS Hacker Valley topographic
quadrangle; lat. 39 degrees 38 minutes 25 seconds N. and long. 80 degrees 45 minutes 51
seconds W.
