He sent his Son Jesus to make sure that we could see what life could be like. Jesus made one lesson clear above all other lessons – the lesson to love. Love is not about us – it is about forgetting ourselves and looking out for the good of others. That’s what Jesus did – he intentionally forgot about himself. He chose to give up his life for the good of others – us! CATHOLIC EDUCATION WEEK: GROWING TOGETHER IN FAITH May 5 to May 10, 2013 Catholic schools are Catholic communities. Catholic schools are faith communities. We – parents, students, teachers, administrative and support staff – walk and grow together in the faith which we received at our Baptism. And it is together that we grow. And as we learn from nature, growth relies on sun and water and nutrition. Otherwise, it may fade away and even die. Our growth is primarily a relationship with God, who at our Baptism, called us by name. We grow in our faith in the nurturing atmosphere of our Catholic community be that of our local parish, our home, or our Catholic school community. Our school community will celebrate Catholic Education Week 2013 in ways that are appropriate to our students’ age. Please see the schedule on page 7. We invite you to participate in one or other of these activities as your personal time and work schedule may permit. There are five sub-themes for each day of Catholic Education Week: Monday – Faith that is Rooted, Tuesday – Faith that is Nurtured, Wednesday – Faith that is Discerned, Thursday – Faith that is Witnessed and Friday – Faith that is Celebrated. We hope to see many of you during our school celebrations. SACRAMENTAL DATES Sacrament of First Holy Communion First Holy Communion will be celebrated on Saturday, April 13, 2013. RESULTS FROM THE EVALUATION OF THE SCHOOL FOOD AND BEVERAGE POLICY In spring 2012, Peel Public Health, in collaboration with the University of Waterloo, initiated an evaluation of the Ontario School Food and Beverage Policy, P/PM 150. The study aims to better understand the eating behaviours of students and to assess the impact of the Food and Beverage policy in Region of Peel Schools. Our grade 6 and 8 students were surveyed on their eating habits. We have received our school’s results from the survey. Some of the key findings were: Most participants did not meet minimum Food Guide recommendations for Vegetables & Fruit or Milk & Alternatives 33% of participants reported eating salty snacks or pizza 2-4 times weekly Only 49% of the study participants reported drinking milk at least once daily 71% of participants reported eating breakfast every day Based on these findings, we have some areas where we can improve. We will continue to promote healthy eating through our healthy eating school team. We encourage parents to promote milk and or dairy alternatives with your Catholic Education Week Activities EASTER FOOD DRIVE We started collecting food items on March 18 for our Easter Food Drive, in support of the Knights’ Table. HEALTHY TIPS FROM YOUR LUNCH LADY 4 Simple Tips for Feeling GOOD Eat More good stuff. Instead of worrying about what you are eating now make fruits and vegetables more available going forward. Baby carrots and apple slices make good snacks for mindless nibbling and are available year round. You’ll feel good because your body is getting what it needs to keep you nourished. Sleep More. The body heals and is revitalized when you sleep. If you cannot do 8 hours, just do your best. Exercise More. You don’t need expensive exercise equipment, just turn on some music and dance. Giggle More. Laughter is the best medicine – Nothing beats a funny movie or a good joke when life is getting you down. April 2013 Our Lady of Lourdes April 2013 Earth Month Activities April is Earth Month and the Our Lady of Lourdes Eco-Team has many eco-friendly activities happening during the month of April. Please refer to the Eco-calendar for the dates of all the activities happening during the month. Monday Tuesday Use a reusable lunch bag Use reusable containers for lunches, snacks, and drinks. Send reusable cutlery Send fabric napkins or have students bring paper napkins home to be put in compost bins Peel/core any fruit in advance and place fruit in reusable containers and compost peels/cores at home Do not send any throw away packages Have students bring home any uneaten food in their reusable containers to either be saved for later or to be composted. Also, our school will be participating in a Passion for E-Waste (Electronic Waste) School Challenge for a chance to win a Samsung Hope for Children Technology Grant up to $10 000. Our school will be collecting e-waste from Monday, April 8 to Friday, April 19, which will then be sent out to be weighed and properly recycled. The school in the GTA that collects the most e-waste by school size category is the winner. E-waste is an increasing problem due to the rapid production and usage of electronics. It poses a problem to our environment as it contains hazardous materials and adds to our waste when it can actually be recycled. Please see the checklist on our website for eligible e-waste and send any eligible items to your child’s teacher. We will also be having a used clothing drive from April 22 to 26. Please send in any gently used clothes as part of our re-use initiative. 8 E-Recycling Program Begins Eco-Trivia over announcements 15 Energy Hog Week 22 Tupperware Tuesday Eco-Trivia over announcements Walk to School Wednesday 4 Take Back the Trash Day 10 5 Flick-Off Friday 11 Walk to School Wednesday Take Back the Trash Day Eco-Trivia over announcements Eco-Trivia over announcements 16 17 12 Flick-Off Friday Eco-Trivia over announcements 18 19 Energy Hog Week Energy Hog Week Energy Hog Week Energy Hog Week Tupperware Tuesday Walk to School Wednesday Take Back the Trash Day E-Recycling Program Ends 23 Earth Day Tupperware Tuesday In-Class Ec0 Olympics presented by the EcoTeam Wear Green to School Day 24 Walk to School Wednesday Lillie Roberts Park Clean Up (Grades 5 to 8) 29 Friday 3 9 Clothing Drive Begins On behalf of the Eco-Team we thank you for your continued efforts to be eco-friendly. “We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children” (Native American proverb). Thursday 2 Tupperware Tuesday On March 19, Brampton Clean City and the Eco-Team completed a Waste Audit for our school and one thing that the Eco-Team noticed is that our garbage has a large percentage of compostable items. We have come up with ―Take Back the Trash Thursdays‖ which are essentially waste-free lunch days that not only encourage students to bring their lunch in reusable containers, furthermore it encourages students to bring home their compostable items rather than putting them in the trash. Please see the tips below for how to pack a lunch for ―Take Back the Trash Thursdays.‖ Wednesday 1 We are continuing our Tupperware Tuesday, Walk to School Wednesday, and Flick of Friday initiatives during Earth Month.
