MATH FOCUS: RESOURCES FOR PARENTS
The Ministry of Education offers a variety
of online resources for parents. At
http://edu.gov.on.ca/abc123/eng/ parents
are provided with „Tips and Tools‟, video
podcasts and helpful links that you can use
at home to support you in your child‟s
education.
This month we will celebrate the virtue of
Kindness.
Every person in our lives carries the Spirit
of God – and so every person is our
brother or sister through Jesus Christ.
As brothers and sister who share one Holy
Spirit, we are all valuable to God. We all
deserve to be shown concern for our
welfare and our feelings. We have all been
given the fruit of the Spirit called kindness.
Kindness can only be seen through
actions. It‟s not enough to say I will be
kind or I am kind. We must show that we
are kind by our words and our actions.

CLASS LISTS FOR SEPTEMBER 2012
We will begin work on next year‟s class
lists in May. If your child(ren) will be
returning to Our Lady of Lourdes School
and there are particular learning needs
that you feel we should consider when
making up classes, please put this in
writing to the Principal by April 27. Only
educational reasons will be considered in
this process. Please do not make requests
for specific teachers.
We cannot guarantee your request but we
will consider your concerns along with
other factors. Class placements will be
tentative until the second week of
September when our staffing is confirmed.
If your family will be moving from our
school area, please
let the office know as
soon as possible.

Our ECO-School Team has been investigating and
monitoring how well we recycle at Our Lady of
Lourdes. We found that there are some items in
c l a s s r o om
r e c yc l i n g
bins
that
do
not
belong. Announcements and in-class presentations by
the ECO-Team will be made to remind students about
proper recycling and to praise classes that have been
putting proper items into their bins. The ECO-Team will
continue to monitor our recycling practices at Our Lady
of Lourdes in the hope that we see continued
improvement over the next few weeks.
DANCE-A-THON SUCCESS!
In December, the Brampton Clean City visited our
school to help our ECO-Team complete a waste audit
and a recycling audit. We found 37% of our total waste
was garbage waste and 63% was “other” waste. When
we went through our recycling, 77% of the total waste
found was recycle waste and 23% of the total was
“other” waste.
UNDERSTANDING KEY ISSUES IN CATHOLIC EDUCATION
On Tuesday, February 7, 2012, the Brampton Clean
City came in again to assist our ECO-Team with
completing a second waste and recycling audit. We
found 51% of the total waste found was garbage waste
and 49% was “other” waste. When we went through our
recycling, we found that 95% of the total waste found
was recycle waste and 5% was “other” waste. Our
recent audit has shown that we are improving our
habits and are getting better at making sure waste and
recycling goes where it belongs.
We will continue to have litterless lunches on Tuesdays.
We hope that bringing lunches, snacks and drinks in
reusable containers will help decrease the amount of
garbage each class produces. Thank you for your
assistance in this initiative! For more information on
recycling please visit www.peelregion.ca.
Thank you to Ms. Drepaul and the ECO team for their
efforts on keeping us proactive in maintaining an ECO
friendly school!
March 5, 19 and 26
A huge thank-you to everyone for
their support of our Dance-a-thon
that was held on Tuesday, February
14th. Through your efforts, $2900
was raised! These funds will help
support the construction of our peace garden.
HOMEWORK TIP OF THE MONTH—Be a role model.
SPEECH COMPETITION
Let your child see you reading, writing, using math, and
doing other things that require thought and effort. For
example, during your child‟s homework time, consider
doing some of your work such as paying bills, balancing
a cheque book or reviewing a recipe. In this way, your
child sees that the skills he or she is practicing are
related to things you do as an adult.
On Thursday, February 8, our Intermediate students
participated in a Speech Competition in the gym.
Congratulations to the students who moved on to
compete on Wednesday, February 15 at the Public
Speaking Contest held at Holy Spirit School.
COPS FOR CANCER
Teachers and students will be
playing volleyball with our local
Police Officers in support of
Cops For Cancer on
Wednesday, March 7, 2012
from 11:30 am to 12:10 pm.
Students are encouraged to
donate $2.00 to the Peel
Regional Police in support of
this program. In exchange for your money, you will be
able to write your name on a police badge, affix it to our
fundraising poster, and watch the game between the
officers and the staff and students in the gymnasium.
These students competed against the winners from
several other schools. All of the contestants did an
amazing job! We thank them their excellence in
representing our school.
SPORTS NEWS
Intermediate Basketball
On Thursday, February 16, the
Intermediate Boys‟ and Girls‟ Basketball
teams competed at the Brampton North
East Mini Basketball Tournament at Father Francis
McSpiritt School. All players showed great skill,
teamwork and sportsmanship throughout the day.
Congratulations to all team members for their efforts. A
special thank you to Mr. Boland for coaching the teams.
March 5—9 is Spirit Week at Our Lady of Lourdes!
When were the obstacles to the existence of Catholic schools
removed from the legislation?
The United Legislature of Canada East and Canada West in
1853, 1855 and 1863 removed all four obstacles to the
existence of Catholic schools. There was no more double
taxation so Catholics did not have to continue paying
common school taxes—they only paid separate school taxes.
It did not matter if there was a Catholic teacher in the
common school. The separate school board did not need the
permission of the common school board to open a new or
additional separate school. The number of Catholic heads of
family to establish a separate school was lowered from twelve
to five. As a result, the number of separate schools grew
considerably.

LOCKDOWN PROCEDURES
During this term we will continue to practice the
Emergency Lockdown procedures with students. These
procedures have been established by our school board
in the event that a high risk incident involving weapons
should occur in the school or on school property. As a
school, we practice these procedures in Lockdown Drills
each term. Our next drill is scheduled for March 28,
2012.
COIN DRIVE
Bring in your coins! Let’s see which class can bring in the most coins.
