St. Edmund Campion Secondary School Visual Arts, Grade 12, Open (AVI4M) 2011 Teacher: Ms. Picarazzi COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course focuses on enabling students to refine their use of the creative process when creating and presenting two- and three-dimensional art works using a variety of traditional and emerging media. The studio allows students to explore a range of materials, processes, and techniques that can be applied to their own art production. Students will also use critical analysis to deconstruct artworks and their connections to society. Developing a theme of art exploration will also be a focus. PREREQUISITE: Visual Arts, Grades 11 UNITS OF STUDY: Unit 1: DRAWING Gesture Drawing, Action Drawing in Detail, Pen and Ink Drawing, and Family Portrait Drawing in Colour. Medium: Pencil crayons, Conte, Oil Pastel, and Charcoal, Pen/Ink, and Graphite. History: Japanese/Chinese Art Activities: Artist Statement Unit 2: PAINTING 3 Major Paintings (1. Watercolour Painting, 2. Alternative surface (ie. wood, stone, tile, self-stretched canvas etc., 3. Self-Stretched Canvas -Large) Medium: Acrylic paint, watercolour, and oil. History: Surrealism, Impressionism, Post-Impressionism and Expressionism Themes: Science of Colour, Abstraction, symbolism, emotions and the psyche. Unit 3: PRINTMAKING Medium: Silk screening History: Cubism and Pop Art Themes: Mass Media, Popular Culture and Branding. Unit 4: SCULPTURE Installation art or Wire Sculpture Medium: Found objects and alternate materials of choice. History: Contemporary Art Themes: Public Art and Art as Activist and Educator. Unit 5: MIXED MEDIA/MULTIMEDIA Culminating T.B.A. GRADE DISTRIBUTION TERM WORK 70% Knowledge 20 Thinking 20 Communication 20 Application 40 FORMS OF ASSESSMENT: Tests and quizzes for every unit Written art critiques Research Projects/Essays Assigned work Drawing journal; Sketchbook FINAL Culminating Performance Task 30% 20 Final Exam 10 Student-teacher conferences; Ongoing verbal feedback Reflections (Artist statements) Formal Presentations Course Notes: Sketchbook is an integral component to preparing your portfolio and developing as an artist. Mapping your assignments through the creative process is necessary. Begin to collect reference work to add to your sketchbook to inform viewers of your creative thought process and stylistic interests. Your Creative challenge this semester is to decide on a theme you would like to explore through your artworks. This could relate to the requirements of prospective colleges/university admission portfolios. Portfolio development is ongoing. Do not dispose of any of your work. A binder with dividers is necessary to organize notes. Artist Statements and Process work necessary for every major artwork created Late Work: Meeting deadlines is an important responsibility and students cannot earn a grade for work they do not submit. If a student is going to miss a due date it is necessary that the student meets with the teacher at least two days before the deadline to discuss the possibility of an extension. Classroom Expectations: 1. Students are expected to treat each other, the teacher and guests with respect and dignity. 2. Sexist, racist, discriminatory or foul language will not be allowed in the classroom. 3. Students are not permitted to drink, each, or chew gum in the classroom. 4. Bags, hats, jackets and electronic devices are not permitted in the classroom. 5. A student agenda is necessary for bathroom breaks. 6. Work areas must be kept clean. The class may not leave class unless ALL work areas are left tidy. 7. Art kits and supplies are used daily. 8. Students will be given the opportunity to do homework. Materials/Lab Fees: Students are strongly encouraged to purchase a supplementary art fee of $30 to cover the cost of a prepared art kit. It is the student’s responsibility to gather supplies required for assignments if a kit is not purchased.
