Foundations of Mathematics
Grade 9 Applied
Course Overview
“This course enables students to develop mathematical ideas and methods through the exploration of
applications, the effective use of technology, and extended experiences with hands-on activities.
Students will investigate relationships of straight lines in analytic geometry, solve problems involving
the measurement of three-dimensional objects and two-dimensional, and apply key numeric and
algebraic skills in problem solving. Students will also have opportunities to consolidate core skills and
deepen their understanding of key mathematical concepts.” p.18 The Ontario Curriculum, Grades 9
and 10, Mathematics
This grade nine mathematics course is designed to develop students’ proficiency as learners and
thinkers in mathematics, and their ability to apply mathematics in their daily lives. Students will
interpret, analyze, and create mathematical models to solve realistic problems, within and beyond the
mathematics classroom.
Units of Study
Unit 1: Measurement: 2-D and 3-D
Unit 2: Measurement: Optimization
Unit 3: Exploring Relationships: Lines and Curves of Best Fit
Unit 4: Proportional Reasoning: Ratio, Rate, and Proportion
Unit 5: Linear Relations: Constant Rate of Change, Initial Condition, Direct and Partial Variation
Unit 6: Multiple Representations: Using Linear Relations and their Multiple Representations
Unit 7: Algebraic Models: Making Connections
Unit 8: Plane Geometry
Required Equipment
1. 3 ring, loose leaf binder
2. Pencils and Pens
3. Scientific Calculator**
4. Lined paper & graph paper
5. Erasers
6. A ruler
**A Scientific Calculator is extremely important. It is expected that every student will bring one to
class by September 8th the latest. **
Textbook: We will not be using a textbook for this course. You will be given a package/series of
packages of the course material. It is expected that you take care of all of these packages and
replace it at your own cost if need be.
Assessment and Evaluation
The mark for the course will be based upon on-going or term work (70%) and a final assessment
(30%) that includes the EQAO (5%), a culminating performance task (10%), and a final exam
(15%). The on-going or term work may include written assignments, reports, unit tests, and quizzes.
Within the two areas, term work and final assessment, marks will be assigned using the four
categories specified in the Ontario Curriculum Grades 9 to 12 Mathematics Education.

Students will be in complete uniform.
The student is to be in the class when the bell rings, prepared to work with all required materials, including
a calculator.
Students are responsible for the booklets assigned to him/her throughout the course. If any booklets are
lost or stolen, the student is required to replace the booklets at their own expense.
The student is to keep a complete and organized notebook with dividers to separate units.
Students are responsible for catching up on missed work and obtaining any notes/handouts.
All work must be handed in ON TIME. Late assignments will be penalized 5% per weekday up to a
maximum of 10%. Assignments more than three days late will receive a mark of zero.
Missed tests will be made up on the FIRST DAY back. Make-up tests will only be granted if a note for the
absence is supplied.
The student will initiate the process for extra help if required.
Treat classmates/teacher the way you would like to be treated.
Should you have any questions or concerns, please contact the teacher at (905) 676-1287.
