ELMIRA COLLEGE-CORNING COMMUNITY COLLEGE
ARTICULATION AGREEMENT
February 2016
General Policies
A. Elmira College accepts a maximum of sixty-eight semester hours of credit from two- year colleges.*
B.
Associate in Arts and Associate in Sciences Degrees:
1.) Students who have received Associate in Arts and Associate in Sciences degrees from Corning
Community College will be admitted to Elmira College as Juniors, if they have at least 54
college transfer credits.
2.) Recipients of these college transfer degrees will receive credit for grades of "D", provided that;
(1) the student has earned a cumulative grade point average of 2.000 or higher, (2) the courses
in which the grades were earned are applicable to the degree, (3) Corning Community College
recognizes the course as a college transfer course, and (4) Elmira College recognizes the course
as a college transfer course (see the Elmira College Bulletin)
Any course that is included in the credits required for an Associate in Arts or Associate in
Science Degree is recognized by Corning Community College as a “college transfer course" and
will be so recognized by Elmira College.
3.) a. Students who have completed the Associate in Arts or the Associate in Sciences degree are
exempt from FYS 1010, First-Year Seminar.
b. For courses that fulfill the Elmira College General Degree Requirements, see the course
listing in Part C below.
4.) Recipients of these degrees will have completed the Elmira College Communication Skills
Program requirement. They will also have fulfilled the Physical Education requirement.
Careful selection of electives should permit the completion of most of the other General
Degree Requirements. Courses are listed below which meet specific parts of the General
Degree Requirements.
C. Associate in Applied Science Degrees: Although many courses may transfer, as listed in Section II,
these degrees are not designed for transfer. Elmira College recognizes this distinction between
degrees, programs and courses leading directly to careers and those that are applicable to
baccalaureate degrees. With a little careful planning, a student may select courses that meet many
of the general education and major requirements of Elmira College, as well as Corning Community
College's requirements for the occupational degree. The specific course equivalents and major
requirements are provided in Parts II and III, below, but the following guidelines may be useful to
Corning Community College students who are considering transferring to Elmira College:
* Corning Community College Nursing graduates will be allowed to transfer up to
80 credits

GENERAL DEGREE REQUIREMENTS
A. Communications Skills Program (6 credits)
Corning students with A. A., A. S. or A.A.S. degrees will have completed this requirement.
Corning students who complete ENGL 1010 and ENGL 1020 (College Composition I and II) will
meet this requirement. If only one course has been completed, the student will be required to take
the other Writing course at Elmira College.
B. "W" Course (3 credits)
Every student must complete, with a passing grade, a course at Elmira College from an approved
list of "W" courses. This will be an upper-level course, taken at Elmira College, in the student's
major with a special emphasis on written communication.
C. Mathematical Competency and Quantitative Reasoning
Mathematical Competency (0-5 credits)
Completion (with a passing grade) of any of the following courses will satisfy this requirement:
MATH 1215, MATH 1225, MATH 1411, MATH 1412, MATH 1413, MATH 1510, MATH 1520,
MATH 1610, or MATH 1620, MATH 2610, MATH 2620.
Quantitative Reasoning Requirement (3-6 credits)
The Quantitative Reasoning or (QR) requirement will expose students to developing strategies and
solving problems in a structured, logical and analytical way. Students will also have the opportunity
to apply these strategies to specific questions in specific disciplines. Students will take one course
(usually 3 or 4 credits) beyond Mathematical Competency. Courses satisfying Quantitative
Reasoning contain a significant quantitative component. These courses may come from a variety of
disciplines including but not limited to Mathematics. [See Appendix A]
D. First-Year Seminar (3 credits)
Full-time students who transfer less than 21 credits must complete FYS 1010, First Year Seminar at
Elmira College.
E. The Pillars and World Engagement (27-36 credits)
The Pillars and World Engagement requirements provide students with the intellectual breadth in
the liberal arts and sciences necessary to be a broadly educated and globally aware citizen.
Courses taken as part of a major or concentration will qualify for The Pillars. No more than 3
credit hours from the same field code may be applied unless that field code is for a language other
than English.

F. Physical Education and Wellness (2 activities or at least 2 credits)
Recipients of the Corning Community College Associate in Arts or Associate in Science degree
have fulfilled this requirement. Other transfer students should refer to the list of specific Corning
Community College courses, which can be used to fulfill this requirement. They are found in the
Physical Education and Recreation sections in the equivalent course lists in this agreement. Refer
to the Elmira College Bulletin for alternative ways to fulfill this requirement. Elmira College
requires all full-time undergraduate students to complete this requirement.
G. Career-Related Internship (0 credit)
The career-related internship provides an opportunity for students to explore work experience
related to the major or to potential career goals. Career-related internships may be completed any
time after the sophomore year and do not receive academic credit, unless offered for credit by the
student’s major. No essay is required. Elmira College requires all full-time undergraduate
students to complete this requirement. There are multiple ways to complete the Career-Related
Internship requirement:
1. Work for a minimum of 80 hours in a pre-career or major-related environment. This work
may be paid or unpaid, but must be career or major-related. Students may work with the
Office of Career Services or on their own to find an appropriate career or major-related
internship.
2. Students must complete the major specific internship if it is required by the major.
Students who are completing a major that offers an internship for credit may complete their
internship according to the guidelines of the major. The number of hours required for the
internship may vary from major to major.
3. Pre-Graduate School Internship. Students who plan to go on to graduate school may work
with a faculty member to write an original thesis, or produce an original body of work
appropriate for their field of study. This option will require students to register for 6 credit
hours. The thesis or work should result in a significant and appropriate contribution of new
ideas to the field. Upon completion, students will do an oral presentation of their work to
the campus community.

The Career-Related Internship is administered by the Office of Career Services. Additional
information is available from the Director of Career Services. The following Corning Community
College courses may meet the Elmira College Career-Related Internship Requirement. Students

complete a 60 hour non-credit community service experience with a local non-profit
organization before the end of their sophomore year at Elmira College. No essay is required
to complete this requirement. A list of non-profits in Elmira is available from the Office of
Career Services. The Office is considering eliminating the waiver option for all students,
including those currently enrolled, beginning in the Fall of 2014. Additional information is
available in the Office of Career Services.

EQUIVALENT COURSES
This part of the articulation agreement lists, by academic discipline, those courses offered by
Corning Community College which may be applied toward the baccalaureate degrees (A.B. and
S.B.) at Elmira College.
Corning Community College courses which do not have specific equivalents at Elmira College, but
which are accepted toward an Elmira College degree are listed below as follows:
“Major Electives” are courses counting toward the total number of credits in a major but not
specifically required for the major.
“General Electives” are courses counting toward the total of 120 credits needed for graduation but
not counting toward any major or general degree requirement.
Corning Community College courses which are not listed below may still be included in the 60 to
68 credits accepted for transfer, even if they do not meet any of the Major, Minor, or General
Degree requirements at Elmira College; however, all courses accepted in transfer must be of a
generally similar nature, content, and level to Elmira College courses (and must not be remedial or
narrowly vocational).
Accounting
The Elmira College equivalents of the following 4 credit courses carry only 3 credits each; therefore, only 3
credits of any one course may be applied toward the major requirements in Accounting or Business
Administration. (VERY IMPORTANT: See also the special state regulations governing the Accounting
major, which are set forth in Part III, Special Major Requirements.)

there are no “equivalent” courses at Elmira College. Successful completion of MATH 1210, MATH
1215, MATH 1220 or MATH 1225 fulfills the Mathematics Competency requirement in the General
Degree Requirements at Elmira College. MATH 1015 does not fulfill this requirement but is accepted
for credit.
Because many Elmira College majors require at least one Statistics course, a sequence at Corning
Community College such as MATH 1215-MATH 1225 plus either MATH 1310 at Corning
Community College or MAT 2090 at Elmira College is highly recommended.

SPECIAL MAJOR REQUIREMENTS
Equivalent General Education and Major Requirements for most Elmira College Degrees may be
determined by consulting the list of courses in Part II of this agreement. However, certain majors have
special requirements, which are set forth here. In this section, the terms and conditions involved in
completing these majors are presented in the context of the Corning Community College Curricula, so that
Corning students, who may consider transfer to Elmira College, may plan their programs more effectively.
Accounting
Elmira College's S.B. Degree in Accounting is registered by the New York State Education Department as
qualifying for the CPA Licensure. Elmira College must meet the standards established by the State Board
of Accountancy. For that reason, the S.B. Degree in Accounting is a highly structured major with very
specific requirements. Students must complete 27 credits in Accounting, 33 credits in Business and related
courses, and 60 college transfer credits in the "Liberal Arts and Sciences". To meet these standards, Elmira
College limits to 12 the number of credits in Accounting, which may be transferred:
ACCT 1030 (3 credits only) Acct. Prin. I
ACCT 1040 (3 credits only) Acct. Prin. II
ACCT 2030 (3 credits only) Inter. Acct. I

advised to enroll in the Associate in Science transfer program in Business Administration (AS), and
to complete the advanced requirements in accounting after they transfer. Corning graduates who
have received the Associate in Applied Science Degree in Accounting (AAS) must consult a
member of the accounting faculty at Elmira College to determine their status at the time of
registration.

Although a minimum 2.0 Grade Point Average (GPA) is required for Admission to Elmira College,
acceptance into the Teacher Education Program and Student Teaching has a higher GPA
requirement. Students must earn and maintain a 2.7 GPA in both their academic major and/or
concentration and in their Teacher Education program courses. An application for acceptance into the
Teacher Education Program must be completed by January 15th in the student's second (Sophomore)
year. The Student Teaching I application is due by October 15th in the student's third (Junior)
year. Transfer students who are admitted to Elmira College with Junior status must complete both
applications by October 15th of their third (Junior) year and their Student Teaching II applications by
January 15th of their third (Junior) year.
The Liberal Arts and Sciences: Education/Childhood Education Program at Corning Community College

Foreign Languages
A major in foreign languages requires completion of core requirements plus an area of specialization chosen
from French or Spanish. Each specialization in a modern foreign language requires a minimum of 24
credits excluding the first-year course, as specified in the Elmira College Bulletin. At least 12 of these
credits must be at the 3000-level or higher.

religion.
Criminal Justice
Although several specific courses are equivalent, the Elmira College S.B. major in Criminal Justice is
significantly different from the Corning Community College A.A.S. Criminal Justice degree in its structure
and purposes. Students who have received this degree should consult a member of the Elmira College
faculty to determine their status prior to registration.
Speech and Hearing
A maximum of nine credits may be transferred as related electives based on the equivalencies listed in part
II.

written notice is submitted to the other party no later than the end of the first semester of the previous year.
Changes to course titles and new courses may be added throughout the year with the consultation of both
parties. Students who are enrolled in Elmira College shall complete their programs under the terms in
force at the time.
