Movie Review: Into the Woods
Elliot Lockshine
Into the Woods, being one of my favorite musicals, was recently
transformed into a musical-movie. The plot of this story is very interesting, which is why I love it and I think you will too. Into the Woods
features many different fairytale characters coming in contact with
each other for the first time. Some of the best known characters are:
Cinderella, Red Ridinghood, Jack, and your everyday normal Witch.
One of the only negative things that I would say about the movie is
that Johnny Depp, was unnecessary. He portrayed the role of the
wolf who stalks Little Red Ridinghood. His performance was too
similar to all of his other performances. Besides that, Chris Pine and
Billy Magnussen, put on a hilarious performance as the two princes.
James Corden played the baker and Emily Blunt played his wife.
They both had a terrific performance as did Meryl Streep as the
Witch. Anna Kendrick, as most of you know from Pith Perfect, was
cast with the role of Cinderella. The singing and music were both
delightful, yet the producers decided to cut out the following songs:
No More, I Guess This Is Goodbye, First Midnight, and Second Midnight. They also cut out the character of the Mysterious Man. Overall, it was a wonderful movie and I suggest going to see it.

Apple’s next big
device…a pen?
Lauren Havelka
Apple has been granted a patent for a pen-like
device—or "communicating stylus"—that would allow users to write on any surface and see their handwriting and drawings on a digital device.
The patent did not reveal how the stylus would connect to another device, but
said it could be done via a "receiver integral or external to the computing device," according to the patent.
The computing device may be located anywhere, as long as it is able to communicate with the stylus, and be able to display the written text or images," it
said in the patent, suggesting a mobile internet connection of some sort.
The designs showed that the stylus might contain ink or other material that
would allow users to mark the surface they are writing on, with the image then
appearing on a screen. “This is, of course, suited to Apple's iPad and largerscreen iPhone 6 Plus.”

YouTube and You
Madison Toth
YouTube, a site that is known and used by nearly everyone was founded in 2005
and is used for instructional videos, music videos, educational videos, comedy,
and more. It is most commonly used for catching up on the amusing, helpful, or
entertaining videos of your favorite YouTuber. With many colorful personalities
and creators of amazing content there is much to choose from. There are many
well-known successful YouTubers like Rhett and Link, Smosh, Jenna Marbles,
Bethany Mota and Michelle Phan. These people, among other entertainers have
even branched out into TV, movies, and other forms of media such as books.
They are becoming just as popular as what we consider our classic celebrities.
Teachers also use the site for videos to use in class. There is an easy access
video on YouTube for almost any topic that you can imagine. If you want to learn
how to make a scarf or do a trick on your skateboard you can count on YouTube
for help. But the question is how YouTube, and these online personas are changing our society. The comment sections have been known to hurt some feelings
and not everything on YouTube is for all ages. But on the other end of the spectrum videos can send positive messages, teach us skills, and make us laugh and
smile. I have interviewed some students to get their view on YouTube's effect. ”I
use YouTube for watching makeup videos, music videos, watching Connor Franta, and O2L,” says Dori Hauser an 8th grade student. “YouTube has a positive
effect on society because the videos are funny and there are tutorials and lots of
music choices.” Sami Brizes, another 8th grade student uses YouTube for music
videos and tutorials on how to do things. She believes YouTube’s effect on society is negative because there is bad stuff on YouTube and the safety feature
can’t block all it should. So whether you feel YouTube is positive or negative,
things would be very different if we did not have that red and white play button
icon to click on.

LBMS HOLDS ANNUAL SPELLING BEE AND GEOGRAPHY BEE
Matthew Wallenhorst
Friday, January 9th eighteen students, three representatives from each team, after weeks of preparation,
participated in the school-wide annual geography bee. The competition, held Friday afternoon, went on for
about one hour, through 5 rounds, and had to end before it was finished, due to many afterschool activities
taking place. Because there were many remaining contestants, the bee was continued on Monday morning in
the media center. After a long and vigorous competition, a winner was finally crowned. Seventh grade representative, Chris Haddad from sea team took first place, followed by blue team participants Ameen Zayed taking second, and Matt Eppele taking third. Mrs. Fetko, Mr. Henderson, and Mr. Hammond judged the event.
On January 21st eighteen representatives from across the school gathered in the media center to participate in a preliminary round of Lee Burneson’s Spelling Bee. This round was held due to the prolonged nature
of the school’s Geography Bee, in which many contestants were still remaining when school ended. Nine competitors competed the following day in the official Bee. After seven rounds, three participants remained and
contested in the championship rounds. None were eliminated until the third championship round, where Menaz
Shaik took third place. Many rounds followed between the two remaining contestants, Terry Zheng and Gabrielle Kim. After these intense rounds, Kim correctly spelled epidemiology and claimed the first place trophy.
