THE BURNESON GAZETTE Lee Burneson Middle School Newspaper February 2015 A Game for the Ages Andrew Franklin Super Bowl 49, a Super Bowl for the ages. Super Bowl 49 definitely lived up to the hype. Two completely opposite teams came into this game: the conservative Patriots and the fast paced offense of the Seahawks. The first and second quarters looked like it would be the Patriots day, since they had complete control of the game. Surprisingly, the game was still tied because the Seahawks liked to take risks and throw touchdowns instead of kicking a field goal. Despite the Patriots controlling the game, the Seahawks came out and scored ten points in the third quarter to give them a ten point lead. After the third quarter, however there was that vibe that the Patriots would still come back, they still had control. The fourth quarter was perhaps one of the best quarters in NFL history. New England, down by ten, forced a turnover to regain the ball with 12 minutes left. The Patriots capped off a four minute drive with a touchdown pass from Tom Brady. After a forced punt, New England regained the ball with seven minutes left. A 64 yard drive resulted in a successful touchdown pass. The Patriots were up by four with two minutes left. Seattle would have one more shot. The Seahawks got inside Patriots territory after a 36 yard pass on the first play of the drive. An eleven yard pass gave Seattle another first down. On first down Wilson dropped back and threw a 33 yard pass to Kearse. A circus catch. The pass was tipped up in the air and Kearse somehow still caught the ball with his back on the ground. Everyone thought “Game over”, but a questionable play call quickly changed that thought into “What just happened?” Instead of the play call everyone expected, a handoff to Lynch, Seattle decided to throw the ball. The whole Seattle sideline immediately regretted the play. The pass was intercepted at the two yard line by Malcolm Butler. Seattle could still get a safety and get the ball back but that idea was lost when an offsides penalty was called on Seattle. A five yard penalty eliminated any idea of a safety. After a fight the game finally ended giving Tom Brady his fourth Super Bowl and sending Patriots fans home happy. Fun Holidays – February 2015 Katie Cirincione In addition to the holidays that you’ve heard of, there are many unusual holidays that are celebrated around the world. Book Review Lauren Havelka Tabula Rasa By: Shelly Reuben Billy Nightingale rescues ""Baby Tuttle,"" the survivor of an act of arson and double homicide. Billy later uncovers evidence that leads to the conviction of the baby's mother, Edith Tuttle, who has used fire to cover the murders of her seven children over an 18-year period. After Edith goes to prison, Billy's older sister, Annie, and her husband, Sebastian Bly, adopt the child. They name her Meredith Marmalade Bly. The family struggles to protect Meredith from learning her true identity, but that is destroyed when Edith is released from prison and goes in search of the last witness to her crimes. I found this book to be very depressing, but it was very good. Edith Tuttle is the creepiest and coldest character I have ever seen. This book will keep you hooked until the very end. Guess the Song Menaz Shaik Answers from last month: Take Me to Church- Hozier I’m Not the Only One- Sam Smith Thinking Out Loud- Ed Sheeran Night Changes- One Direction Love Me Like You Do- Ellie Goulding This month’s songs are… “Save your advice ‘cause I won’t hear, you might be right but I don’t care” “It’s not your fault that they hover, I mean no disrespect” “And we got three more days till Friday, just tryna make it back home by Monday” “My friends had you figured out, yeah they saw what’s inside of you” “But I’m holding on for dear life, won’t look down, won’t open my eyes” MODERN MUSIC Henyah Dardir Now-a-days, every time you turn on the radio station you get the same song, no matter how much it has been overplayed. What happened to the variety? I’m sure it has to do with the fact that the songs that are catchy (even if the artists have put no feeling into them) are the most popular songs. An example would be Iggy Azalea. Why does everyone like her music so much? Most of it is offensive, she doesn’t write her own lyrics, and her overall image is not really supporting of the whole “rapper” label. But it’s catchy, so people will listen to it and even sing along. With all the new technology, it’s difficult to spot out real talent. Who can sing? Who can’t sing? Is this really the artist, or is it just a computer making their vocal ranges more favorable? Many artists, like Bastille or Marina and the Diamonds, use these new styles of music to their advantage making this generation of indie rock and electropop alive and interesting. The 1975 and Arctic Monkeys have a different approach, using suave guitar solos and catchy beats to make their songs fetching. Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran use memorable lyrics and soft instrumentals to draw in the crowds. Almost every genre of music has artists using the newest trends without sounding lifeless and repetitive, you just need to watch out for them. Movie Review: Project Almanac Molly Finucane I definitely enjoyed the movie Project Almanac, but like most time travel movies, some parts were a bit confusing, and required some thinking back, but overall it was a very good and enjoyable movie. The beginning was very good and entertaining to watch the main characters, some nerdy high school kids, mess around with a time machine to make their lives better and to get revenge on people that have bullied them in school. The only problem that I could see with the movie is the end. When one of the group members started to time travel without the group with him, he starts dramatically changing reality for him and his friends. This took a bit of thinking back because by then there were lots of realities and it was a bit difficult to sort through them all to figure out what was going on. This was only a small part of the movie, and the rest of it I enjoyed a lot. I would recommend this movie to anyone who likes science fiction. Cleveland Sports Jaden Evans Right now Cleveland sports are thriving. We have new seasons, off seasons, and mid-seasons. Many of our teams are competing in their divisions to look for a potential shot at the playoffs. First we have the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Cavs had a 12 game win streak until February 6 when the Indiana Pacers defeated the Cavs 103-99.Lebron James said, “I thought we had a real good chance at winning tonight”. As of February 7th the Cavs have 3 more games until the all-star break which Kyrie Irving was named into the 3-point contest which will be held in NYC on February 15th. Our next team is the Cleveland Indians. Pitchers and catchers are set to report on February 18th and the rest of the team on the 22nd and opening day is on April 10th vs the Tigers. The Indians have had somewhat of a good off season with Corey Kluber winning the AL CY young and tribe left fielder Michael Brantley finishing 3 rd in MVP voting. They acquired a slugging 1st basemen via the trade from the Athletics. The tribe has also signed right hander Gavin Floyd from The Atlanta Braves. Floyd has been recovering from Tommy John surgery last season. The Indians are in a tough division with the revamped White sox, the reigning AL champion Royals, and the always strong Detroit Tigers. The Cleveland Browns are entering the offseason without having to find coach for once. Mike Pettine had a decent first season with the Browns turning the 4-12 teams to a 7-9 team which is their best record since 2007 when they went 10-6 and made the playoffs. The Browns hired offensive coordinator John Filippo who was previously the Raiders QB coach. The NFL Draft is on April 30th and the Browns have the 12th pick in the first round and are looking for a wide receiver since Josh Gordon is suspended for a season. All of the Cleveland sports teams are looking for a playoff spot and have the potential for making it. So when you get the chance, go see your Cleveland sports teams! DIY- Sharpie Decorated Mug Menaz Shaik Materials: A plain white mug and Sharpie colors of your choice Step 1Wash the mug with soap and water to make sure there is no dust or dirt on it. Step 2After you wash and dry the mug, pick your sharpies and draw or write whatever you want. Step 3Let the mug dry for a few hours, or overnight to make sure your drawing sticks. Step 4Bake the mug in an oven for 30 minutes at 350ºF. Be sure to leave the mug in the oven until it is completely cooled to prevent any cracks. Tip: Try hand washing the mug instead of putting it in the dishwasher because the machine may cause the sharpie to rub off. 8th Graders Go to Court…at School? Isabella DiGiulio, and Rachel Wagner On Friday, January 23rd, Judge John Russo brought court to LBMS, with three hearings. On Friday morning, all 8th graders dressed up and filed into the gym, not knowing quite what to expect. Judge Russo explained the roles of his colleagues, and they said a few words about their jobs. Then, Lauren Hofford declared the court in session, and the judge turned around to put on his robe. The first case was a woman pleading for her charges of identity theft to be expunged. She had multiple accounts of identity theft, and two separate but close together charges in the past. She had completed a vast amount of community service, including helping out with multiple art programs. In conclusion, her cases were regarded as one, and were removed from her record. The second case was a man who broke his parole, and returned to drug abuse. He had been on a rehab program as part of his parole, but came to his parole meeting in January and tested positive for drugs. He immediately enrolled in another rehab program, and was allowed to continue parole, with more frequent meetings. The third and final case was for a young woman, who wanted to change her plea, on charges of drug abuse and child endangerment, from innocent to guilty. She had a seventh grade education, which was very difficult for her to admit in a room full of 8th graders. Judge Russo allowed her to change her plea, and was put on parole. In conclusion, the court date was interesting, and a great experience in which 8th graders could learn about court, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the consequences of their actions. Studies have shown that the average person spends 8 to 12 hours each day looking at a screen, whether it’s a computer, a TV, or a mobile device. Since you’re supposed to get 8 hours of sleep that leaves only 4 hours for you to interact with the people around you face to face. These numbers may not surprise you, but spending too much time can damage your eyes and cause them to dry out or change. I myself spend too long looking at screens, mainly streaming videContinued on pg. 8 UNITY COMMITTEE HOLDS INDOOR CARNIVAL Matthew Wallenhorst A committee on 8th grade’s Blue Team exists dedicated to creating unity among students. They, from time to time, meet in order to brainstorm ideas for events to cater to the school and/or Blue Team students. The committee was formed by language arts teacher Deb Schrembeck towards the beginning of this school year. Unity Committee held a haunted house on Halloween earlier in this school year in which all Blue Team homerooms were used for various haunted houses. Any student wishing to go had to donate one dollar, which went to the Alzheimer’s Association. The event proved to be a massive success. Most recently, Thursday the 12th, the Unity Committee held an indoor carnival for Blue Team students advertised as, “A Day in the PARCC”, a pun used in reference to the upcoming PARCC tests, as this event was held as a way to give students a break before the new standardized tests, to help alleviate stress, and promote good test scores. Each homeroom was used for a different purpose, Mrs. Kahler’s science room being used as a “chill” room, serving food and drinks and not holding and games, in contrast to Mrs. Schrembeck’s room, which hosted more physical activity, such as jump rope and hula-hoop contests. While there was no entry fee, raffle tickets were sold, to which all profits were to go to the American Heart Association. Students from the Unity Committee along with Mrs. Schrembeck donated to the event, spending from their own pockets for nothing in return. Miss Universe 2015 Annette Hanson (Information from Time Magazine) Paulina Vega (Miss Columbia) is the new Miss Universe. She is the 2 nd Columbian to win since 1958. Coming in 2nd was Nia Sanchez (Miss USA), and in 3rd was Miss Ukraine Diana Harkusha. Paulina is a business administration student and before the contests leading up to the Miss Universe pageants she had never competed in one. This was her final pageant as she plans to restart her studies. After she accepted her crown she commented about her win. “It will be a dream come true to represent the woman of today.” She thinks that she represents women that not only care about beauty but also to be professional, intelligent, and hard-working. She says she was influenced by her grandmother Elvira Susana Castillo Gómez who was Miss Atlántico sixty years ago. Although she appeared very confident she reveals that she got nervous during the question round of the pageant because she wasn’t sure how to answer the first question “What can women learn from men?” but she had calmed down for the 2nd question. Her home town in Columbia erupted in cheers when she was crowned the winner. Paulina talks about the things she loves about America such as Starbucks. She explains that in Columbia there are only about 1 or 2. Most people think that being Miss Universe she would only eat carrots and celery but she admits that she loves eating American junk food such as burgers, fries, and big bags of candy. So next time you think about Miss Universe or any other pageant ditch the stereotypes and be open to the fact that these women are picked not just because they are beautiful but also because they have a brain in their head and a kind heart in their chest. DEBATE/POLL In response to gun crime, should gun use be regulated by the government? Matthew Wallenhorst YES- 66% Supporters of gun control believe that the Second Amendment, which was written to allow the individual’s right to own a gun, was written in reference to hunting, and that such guns used recreationally should be kept legal, whereas the high-power guns of today should be banned, or at least regulated. Gun control advocates believe that military-style weapons that many in America own today are unnecessary, and only create a more unsafe environment. Advocates think that the banning of these weapons is completely necessary, so as to avoid the gun crime America has seen in recent years. I asked a Blue Team student (who wished to remain anonymous) how they felt about the issue. “People are abusing their rights…for violence, and using them to hurt children.” NO- 34% Advocates against gun control see the second amendment as existing so that if the U.S. Government becomes tyrannical, and the people are oppressed, the people can rise up and start a revolution, as the writers of the Constitution had. These anti-gun control advocates believe that “a well-regulated militia”, as is used in the second amendment, is what the founders intended: for all kinds of weapons to remain legal in case of an uprising. Pro-gun advocates also think that a well-armed public will lower crime rates, as if most of the public are gun owners such crimes as break-ins or murders would be avoided. “You can argue it (the Second Amendment) was for muskets, but it still applies, we need to protect ourselves from…government.” said Evan Gallagher on the subject. Time for a Break continued from pg. 6 os. One of my favorite things to watch online is video podcasts. Watching these makes me feel like I’m talking to and laughing with somebody in real life. On multiple occasions I’ve wondered what it would be like if people sat down with a small group of friends and just talked. Lots of people who do go places with their friends spend their time sitting next to each other as each person looks at a smartphone. I had once asked my friends if they would like to hang out and just talk. The bad thing is that they said no. I could only imagine what it would be like if people spent more time talking face to face rather than looking at a screen. Technology is great and necessary for life today but it can become addicting and cause major problems to your health. If you can, spend more of your time talking and interacting with the people and the world around you. Anything can happen. Debate: Dogs or Cats? Katie Cirincione Dogs Dogs are loyal companions. They are social and can be trained to do tricks. Dogs are fun, energetic and loving. Dogs are thought of as “man’s best friend”. Cats Cats are adorable and loving. They are entertaining to watch and don’t require a lot of work to take care of. Cats are the most popular pet in North America. “Though cats are very fun and silly, dogs are more mobile and trainable.” Sammi F. “Cats don’t jump up on people. They are smaller and more simple.” Megan G. “Cats are bad because they are always so “kneady and greedy”.” Meghan W. “Cats won’t slobber all over your furniture.” Anonymous
