Mental Health Awareness Week
Lauren Havelka
The week of May 4th-10th was National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week.
Mental disorders in children are quite common, occurring in about onequarter of this age group in any given year. The most common childhood
mental disorders are anxiety disorders, depression, and attention deficit
hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). As in any age group, there tends to be no
single cause for mental illness in children
Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is a mood disorder that is characterized by multiple and/or nonspecific worries that interfere with the person's
life in some way. GAD is quite common, affecting millions of people. While
there is no single cause of GAD, there are many factors that increase the
risk of developing this disorder. Signs and symptoms of anxiety can include those that are emotional or behavioral and ways of thinking that are
responses to feeling as if one is in danger.
A depressive disorder is a syndrome that reflects a sad, blue mood exceeding normal sadness or grief. One in 10 people will have a depressive
disorder in their lifetime, and in one of 10 cases, the depression is a fatal
disease as a result of suicide. Depression is diagnosed only clinically.
That means that there is no laboratory test or X-ray for depression. Therefore, it is crucial to see a health professional as soon as you notice symptoms of depression in yourself, your friends, or family.
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a mental-health condition
that has characteristics of difficulty concentrating, controlling impulses,
and/or excessive activity. There are three kinds of ADHD: predominately
inattentive type, predominately hyperactive/impulsive type, and the combined (inattentive, hyperactive, and impulsive) type. Though there is no
particular cause of ADHD, there are many social, biological, environmental factors that may raise one's risk of developing the disorder.

“It’s in the rain, and just
one drop will kill you. It’s
contagious and there is
no cure.”
Two weeks ago in London, the rain started.
People were not prepared
for the rain, they got
caught in it, and died. The
tap water wasn’t safe either, but people didn’t
know that before it was
too late.. 15-year-old Ruby Morris, is part of the
0.27% that survived. After
rescuing all the neighborhood dogs, she sets off
on a journey to find her
dad, if he is even alive.
Will Ruby find her dad?
Or will the rain get them
both?
New Renovations at Progressive Field
Andrew Franklin
The Renovations include:
 Capping off a section of the upper deck, which sits empty on all but
the busiest days, with a platform that will conceal unused seats and create new game-viewing areas.
 Remaking the Gate C entrance off East Ninth Street by pulling out
concrete and opening up views of the ballpark from the street. The gate
makeover will eliminate a pavilion and a bar, but the Indians plan to
build a two-story, indoor-outdoor bar in right field. To open up the gate,
the Indians will move the Bob Feller and Jim Thome statues to another
site in the Gate C area. Shapiro said the team also plans to add a statue
of Larry Doby, who was the first black player in the American League.
 Moving the bullpens up into the seating area in center field to give
fans a better view of the players during warm-ups. This shift will create a
section of exclusive seats in front of the new bullpens and will open up
the existing bullpen space to fans who want to stand closer to the field.
 Expanding the Kids Clubhouse, which opened in 2012, to two levels
and renovating the mezzanine. The expansion will eliminate 16 or so
suites, continuing the team's ongoing efforts to replace higher-priced,
poorly used private areas with spaces that all ticketholders can access.
After the renovations, the ballpark still will have upwards of 80 suites far more than the Indians can fill, and more than many other parks offer.
Incorporating five neighborhood-themed areas with food from Ohio City,
Tremont and other popular areas of the city.
The best of the renovations were put to display yesterday at the ballpark. The Indians lost 10-8 on Memorial day ending their 6 game win
streak on their hope to get back to .500.

On May 10 Missy Franklin turned 20
years old. Missy Franklin is an Olympic swimmer who won 4 gold medals
in the 2012 London Games and
broke world records in the 400 meter
medley relay and the 200 meter
backstroke. She holds American records in the 100 meter backstroke and
the 200 meter backstroke. She
learned to swim when she was 5.
Missy won Breakout Performer of the
Year at the 2010 golden goggles.
When Missy was 13 she attempted to
qualify for the 2008 Olympics and
didn’t make it. She turned down a
chance to become pro and compete
at the University of California Berkley.
She is one of the world’s top swimmers and we wish her great luck in
the future.
Good Luck to

“Flying” Pigs on May Day
Upcoming Events
Annette Hanson
You may not know there is a holiday on the 1st of May called May Day. It
is a celebration for the coming of spring. It is celebrated in many countries
as a spring festival. A city in central China has received many complaints
about how they celebrated May Day this year. They painted red numbers
on the side of pigs and had them jump off a platform into a lake and race
to the finish line. They called the event “flying” pigs which was set up as a
tourist attraction. People have taken to the public with complaints saying it
is animal cruelty. The organizers of the event responded saying that they
are well trained and that pigs like water and that they clearly enjoyed it.
People fired back still saying that it might be true that pigs like water but
there is no way to tell if they enjoyed it or not. Some took to the internet
about their complaints hoping to get backup. They say that they can’t see
how forcing scared animals to do something they don’t want to do is entertaining. Not every country celebrates May Day in this way. Most celebrate it as National Workers’ Day. People also believe that it is even celebrated in communist countries too.
