FOREWORD
The Iranian Petroleum Standards (IPS) reflect the
views of the Iranian Ministry of Petroleum and
are intended for use in the oil and gas production
facilities,
oil
refineries,
chemical
and
petrochemical plants, gas handling and processing
installations and other such facilities.
IPS is based on internationally acceptable
standards and includes selections from the items
stipulated in the referenced standards. They are
also supplemented by additional requirements
and/or modifications based on the experience
acquired by the Iranian Petroleum Industry and
the local market availability. The options which
are not specified in the text of the standards are
itemized in data sheet/s, so that, the user can
select his appropriate preferences therein.
The IPS standards are therefore expected to be
sufficiently flexible so that the users can adapt
these standards to their requirements. However,
they may not cover every requirement of each
project. For such cases, an addendum to IPS
Standard shall be prepared by the user which
elaborates the particular requirements of the user.
This addendum together with the relevant IPS
shall form the job specification for the specific
project or work.
The IPS is reviewed and up-dated approximately
every five years. Each standards are subject to
amendment or withdrawal, if required, thus the
latest edition of IPS shall be applicable
The users of IPS are therefore requested to send
their views and comments, including any
addendum prepared for particular cases to the
following address. These comments and
recommendations will be reviewed by the relevant
technical committee and in case of approval will
be incorporated in the next revision of the
standard.

GENERAL DEFINITIONS:
Throughout this Standard
definitions shall apply.

COMPANY:
Refers to one of the related and/or affiliated
companies of the Iranian Ministry of Petroleum
such as National Iranian Oil Company, National
Iranian Gas Company, National Petrochemical
Company and National Iranian Oil Refinery And
Distribution Company.
PURCHASER:
Means the "Company" where this standard is a
part of direct purchaser order by the “Company”,
and the "Contractor" where this Standard is a part
of contract document.
VENDOR AND SUPPLIER:
Refers to firm or person who will supply and/or
fabricate the equipment or material.
CONTRACTOR:
Refers to the persons, firm or company whose
tender has been accepted by the company.
EXECUTOR:
Executor is the party which carries out all or part
of construction and/or commissioning for the
project.
INSPECTOR:
The Inspector referred to in this Standard is a
person/persons or a body appointed in writing by
the company for the inspection of fabrication and
installation work.
SHALL:
Is used where a provision is mandatory.
SHOULD:
Is used where a provision is advisory only.
WILL:
Is normally used in connection with the action by
the "Company" rather than by a contractor,
supplier or vendor.
MAY:
Is used where a provision is completely
discretionary.

1. SCOPE
This Standard covers the minimum requirements of
pressure test to be carried out on plant piping
systems. Upon completion of piping systems and
before commissioning, it shall be pressure tested in
order to prove the strength of the system, its
tightness (absence of leaks) and the integrity of
weldments and materials.

5. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
5.1 Before commencing pressure test, the executor
shall prepare and submit for the Engineer approval
a detailed test procedure together with the pressure
test flow sheets and Hydro test diagram.

5.4 Vents shall be provided at all high points in the
piping system and drains shall be provided at all
low points.

6. HYDROSTATIC PRESSURE TESTING

6.1 General
،‫ در ﻣﻮاﻗﻌﻲ ﻛﻪ ﻓﺸﺎر آزﻣﺎﻳﺶ ﻟﻮﻟﻪ ﻫﺎي ﻣﺘﺼﻞ ﺑﻪ ﻇﺮوف‬1-1-6
6.1.1 Where the test pressure of piping attached to
a vessel is the same as or less than the test pressure
for the vessel, the piping may be tested with the
vessel at the piping test pressure.

6.1.2 Where the test pressure of the piping exceeds
the vessel test pressure, and it is not considered
practicable to isolate the piping from the vessel,
the piping and the vessel may be tested together at
the vessel test pressure, provided the owner
approves and the vessel test pressure is not less
than 77% of the piping test pressure calculated by
the Equation 1. (See 6.5.1).

elements. Prior to testing, gages and indicators
shall be calibrated (preferably on site) and a record
of the instrument calibration and identification shall
be kept as part of the inspection records. The
calibration date and identification should be affixed
to the instruments. Calibration shall be done
according to IPS-C-IN-100.

6.4 Test Medium

6.4.1 General
a) The test fluid normally shall be fresh water
and shall not contain suspended solids which
may plug small lines. If it is found necessary
water filter shall be used equipped with 100
mesh screen to remove 99% of particles which
are 140 microns or more in size.

The preferred method for hydrostatic testing of
duplex stainless steel piping is to use potable water
(up to 150 mg/kg Chlorides) and to carefully rinse
the equipment immediately after the pressure test
with condensate or demineralized water (up to 2
mg/kg Chlorides), followed by through drying or
dewatering the equipment and filling with nitrogen
in such a way that all oxygen is removed from the
system.

6.5.2 Refrigeration service test pressure

6.5.5 Jacketed lines test pressure
In jacketed lines the jacket shall be tested not less
than 1½ times the jacket design pressure. The
internal line shall be tested on the basis of internal
or external pressure whichever (in the opinion of
the Engineer) is critical. When the pressure in the
jacket is high it might be advisable or essential to
pressurize the inner pipe during hydraulic test of
the jacket.

7. PNEUMATIC PRESSURE TESTING
7.1 General
If following conditions apply, pneumatic testing
may be substituted for hydrostatic testing with prior
approval of Engineer. This substitution should be
specified in pressure test flow sheets:

7.6 Pneumatic Testing Procedure
The following steps shall be taken in performing
pneumatic test:

pressure for at least 10 minutes.

The test pressure shall be increased
gradually in increments of 100 kPa (14.5 psig)
to provide time for stress in the piping to
equalize. The gradual increase also provides
sufficient time to allow the inspector to check
for leaks. All joints, flanges and welds shall be
tested by applying the soapy water. Flanged
joints and any weld areas which may be
difficult to inspect may be tested by wrapping
with a suitable adhesive tape and applying the
soap solution to a pin-hole in the tape. The tape
shall not be pressed down on to the weld

c) When the full test pressure has been reached,
the pressure shall be held for a sufficient time
to permit inspection of piping welds and
connections. The time shall never be less than
1 hour.

d) The pressure shall be gradually reduced to
atmospheric at the end of the test. Pressure shall
be released by means of a suitable valve.
Pressure release shall not be achieved by
loosening of flange bolts or plugs or via a line
ball valve or gate valve. Care shall be taken to
avoid metal temperatures falling below 0°C,
particularly near the vent connection during
depressurizing.

Welds or portion of welds that leak during pressure
test shall be repaired (after depressurizing) using an
approved weld repair procedure and proved
acceptable by NDT prior to repeating the pressure
test.
Any leaks at flanged joints shall be investigated
prior to remedial action. Care shall be taken not to
apply excessive torque to bolting to achieve a leaktight seal.
Following repair of any leaks, the full pressure test
procedure shall be followed in repeating the test.
9. MANUFACTURING CERTIFICATE FOR
PREFABRICATED PIPING

Actual line and equipment test pressures shall be
accurately recorded by the executor. These records
shall be made of each piping installation during the
testing and shall include the following information:

signature certifies that the piping system has
been tested as required.
