A Community Outreach Program for Disabled Adults
Our Mission
Westside Connections is a program that provides educational and social
opportunities for disabled adults in our community. We want all of our students
to lead productive and fulfilling lives, and we endeavor to achieve the following
goals:
Provide academic, functional, and social assistance to graduating
students making the transition from high school to adult living.
Provide opportunities to participate in the community (bowling,
sporting events, dinner, etc.).
Provide opportunities to improve daily living skills (cooking, consumer
choices, communication, self care etc.).
Provide information and advocacy related to adult services.
Provide an opportunity to interact socially and establish friendships.
A Brief History
For the past thirty years, many adults with disabilities in our area were
served under the state funded Adult Basic Literacy Education program. The
primary objective of this program was to provide academic services for those
looking to find work or advancement opportunities. However, due to changes in
the population we were serving, it became evident that a broader, more
functional curriculum was needed to meet their needs. The state’s academic
requirements were no longer appropriate. We agreed to part ways in May of
2008.
With the support of the Westlake City School District and the Westlake
community, we hope to continue helping these adults for many years. The
district has agreed to provide the facilities and insurance. We are now reaching
out to the community for the financial help we need to continue providing this
service.

A Community Outreach Program for Disabled Adults
How Can Your Organization Help?
Westside Connections is looking for sponsors from our community to
provide funding for materials, social activities, and wages. Our proposed budget
of five thousand dollars would cover these expenses for the 2009-2010 school
year. The Westlake Board of Education has agreed to act as our financial agent,
handling all transactions. Your tax deductible donation will be submitted to the
board and officially recognized during the monthly meetings. You will receive a
notice of your donation to be used for tax purposes.
Our functional curriculum and desire to find enriching community activities
also allows for creative donations. If your organization can provide food, supplies,
or access to your facilities (bowling, tours, dinner, etc.), we would gladly accept
any form of generosity offered.
The name, Westside Connections, was chosen because we want our
students to form meaningful connections with the community. We hope to
facilitate opportunities for a population that may struggle to form those
relationships independently. If you feel our students could benefit from your
knowledge and experience, we would encourage you to visit our program as a
guest speaker, or join us for special events. Whatever your contribution, you can
be certain it will have a positive and direct impact on our students. Please
consider our proposal and join our mission to improve the quality of life for these
extraordinary individuals.
