Business Challenge
Faxe Kommune is a Danish municipality in the Zealand region, with 2918 employees
and a network comprising approximately 8500 IP-connected devices. Faxe
municipality is located half an hour drive south of the capital, Copenhagen. In 2012,
to comply with the European Union 2012 Energy Efficiency Directive and to become
more environmentally responsible, Faxe Kommune entered an agreement with 11
other municipalities to gradually reduce carbon dioxide consumption and emissions at
least 20 percent over 2008 levels by the year 2020.
Over the next 3 years, Faxe Kommune implemented many traditional energy
reduction initiatives; including, but not limited to, using solar energy for heating,
ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems to suspend heating and cooling
during nonbusiness hours, adopted staff initiatives and policies for manually
powering down electricity-using devices when not in use, and so on. However,
after all the traditional reduction proposals were implemented, it was clear that Faxe
Kommune needed to go further to achieve the target energy and carbon dioxide
reduction goals it had agreed to.
As is standard for local governments, there were significant budgetary constraints to
implementing a more comprehensive energy management solution. Faxe Kommune
was challenged with finding new ways to reduce its energy usage and carbon
emissions without increasing its overall budgetary costs.
Finally, the municipality was challenged with a need for visibility into their network.
Faxe Kommune had no visibility into the energy use of the devices on its network
and no way to measure or report on that energy use.

Case Study
Network Solution
“ With Cisco Energy
Management, we
have a clear picture
of when our devices
are in use and when
they’re inactive.
We monitor all
devices on the
network and can
control them all from
a laptop anywhere.”

Resources, IT, and Digitization
Faxe Kommune
The Cisco Energy Management Discovery Service was deployed across the entire
Faxe Kommune network of approximately 8500 devices, comprising Cisco Catalyst®
switches, Cisco WLAN products, laptop and desktop PCs, laptop and desktop Macs,
printers, routers, VoIP phones, and miscellaneous Internet of Things (IoT) devices.
Although the trusted Cisco brand played a vital role in establishing credibility for the
Cisco Energy Management Discovery Service, after the benefits and capabilities
were demonstrated to the city, it became clear to Faxe Kommune that there really
was no other product in the marketplace that can deliver the functionality and
visibility that is so important to achieving its energy and carbon reduction goals.
The Cisco Energy Management Suite helped enable Faxe Kommune monitor all
its devices with an IP address that were connected to its network. This gave Faxe
Kommune a clear picture of exactly how energy is being used for every device on
the network and what devices are being underutilized and can be powered down
without impacting business. With these capabilities the city was able implement
policies to ensure that energy is being consumed only when it is needed.
Because Energy Management Suite is an agentless solution and is vendor agnostic,
the city was able to deploy the solution across the entire network in a matter of
hours without purchasing any additional equipment. Through the central Cisco
Energy Management dashboard, Faxe Kommune has the ability to monitor and
control the energy from anywhere with an Internet connection.
The functionality and transparent network integration of Cisco Energy Management
Suite delivered exactly what the municipality needed to achieve its initiatives, and,
therefore, eliminating any potential competitors from consideration.
Business Results
Through the Cisco Energy Management Discovery Service, complete deployment
was achieved and all network attached devices were automatically discovered and
inventoried in a matter of hours. Faxe Kommune has now complete visibility into 100
percent of the energy use on the IT network to improve energy efficiency and reduce
costs.
“With Cisco Energy Management, we have a clear picture of when our devices are
in use and when they’re inactive. We monitor all devices on the network and can
control them all from a laptop anywhere.”, says Ib O. Rasmussen, director, Center for
Economy, Human Resources, IT, and Digitization.

Because the municipal budget was extremely limited and fiscal responsibility was
an important consideration for the municipality, the cost benefits had to be very
compelling. This concern was addressed on multiple levels. First, the Cisco Energy
Management solution was able to demonstrate a complete ROI in less than 4 months.
Because of these projections, the Danish Energy Authority approved a rebate of DKK
0,35 per kilowatt-hour saved through the Energy Management Suite.
Additionally, by working through Cisco Capital® financing, Faxe Kommune was able
to set up 0 percent financing over 3 years for a 3-year subscription and 60 hours of
Cisco Advanced Services during the discovery service. The municipals own Energy
Savings Fund financed the investment.
