Students have been excited all year for this unit, and it’s finally here. We have begun learning about the different planets, the moon, the sun, asteroids, meteoroids, comets, stars, astronauts, space vessels, and Canada/Canadians in Space. Students will get a sneak peek into each one of these topics. Students have many questions when it comes to this unit, and they will be using these questions and wonderings to guide them in their inquiry. They will pick a topic that interests them, and one that they want to learn more about. Students will be given much classroom research time, but may need to use devises at home to put all their information together into a media presentation. Over the past several weeks, students have been introduced to Canada’s past in terms of immigration. We have briefly looked into several different cultural groups (from the Vikings about 1000 years ago, all the way to Kosovar refugees in 2001) the time of their immigration to Canada, reasons for their immigration, and contributions they have made to Canada. Now it’s the students’ turn. They will be completing another inquiry project where they will focus more intensely on a cultural group that interests them, or an event that caused an influx of immigration to Canada. Students will be given sufficient time to research in class, but may need to use devices at home to complete their multimedia presentations. Students are excited to learn more about the topics of their choice, and we look forward to learn from everyone’s presentations. Happy Birthday!! Samantha: April 11 Morenike: April 23 Erika: May 24 What we will be focusing on: Religion *Digital Citizenship * Believing Language * Reviewing all forms (letter, persuasive, descriptive, articles, etc) Family Life *Growing in Commitment * Living in the World Math *3D Geometry & Measurement *Multiplying & Dividing *Algebra Science * Space Social studies * Canada’s Communities; Past and Present Math Students have been learning about area and volume of 2D and 3D shapes for Geometry and Measurement. We will soon move on to Numeration with a focus on Multiplying and Dividing 2 digit numbers. We will also learn about algebraic expressions where students need to find the missing numbers in a variety of equations. Students should be taking their workbooks and textbooks home on a daily basis to review any concepts learned that day (whether they have homework or not). Language In Language we will be reviewing all the different forms of writing we have talked about in the year. Students have been and will continue to work on timed pieces of writing (letter writing, descriptive paragraphs, article writing, procedural writing and narrative writing) to help them prepare for EQAO. Students will also be reviewing different types of texts we have read, and will be given timed questions to check for understanding. Again, these will be EQAO type questions to prepare them for the upcoming province wide standardize test. EQAO TEST The EQAO test will be held between May 25 – June 7 for students in grades 3 and 6. The test will run for 6 half days (either morning or afternoon). Thank you to all parents who signed up for the free after-school tutoring at our school. This extra practice and concentration on EQAO style questions will help your child feel confident when it is time for the test. I Can Make A Difference At the beginning of the year, students were reminded of the I Can Make a Difference Campaign for students in Grades 5-8. We had an assembly in the Fall to remind students of all the wonderful ways they can make a difference and volunteer in our community. As stated in my September/October newsletter, the students’ 10 hours of volunteering sheet and a one page reflection will be due on May 1. Two students from each class will be selected to present their reflection at our ICMAD assembly on May 4th and 1:15. All parents are welcome to attend. April Showers….. With the wet weather we have been having, our field is very muddy. Please ensure your child has indoor shoes to keep our classroom environment clean. I hope you all had a relaxing March Break and a Blessed Easter with your families. I would like to wish all the mothers, foster mothers, grandmothers, and aunts a wonderful Mother’s Day in May. Thank you for all you do to help your child grow in love and faith. God bless you and have a fantastic Mother’s Day celebrating all that you do! o o
