Reflecting on Learning around Hilliard
IB = International Baccalaureate
PYP = Primary Years Programme
Reflection on work and actions helps students continue to make connections and meaning in their
learning, both academic and social. Here are some examples from the Hilliard hallways:
Miss Kathy’s Pre-schoolers have worked together and reported what they’ve learned about the Avon
Lake eagles on chart paper and with a life-sized eagle and nest made in the hallway. The learning
continues as they monitor the eggs in the nest via live feed on a classroom computer. Stay tuned…
2nd graders reflected on books they enjoyed during their How we organize ourselves unit, then used
their persuasive letter-writing skills to recommend it to a friend or family member.
Hilliard Mission Statement

4th graders can reflect what they’ve learned all
year by consulting the timelines outside their
classrooms. Looking back over what they
learned in previous units helps students make
connections and draw new, more informed
conclusions.
At the end of their How the world works unit,
first graders collaborated to write facts they
learned about the sun in their own words.
Pawsitive Tuesdays
On Pawsitive Tuesday (Mar. 1) a group of students was recognized with an awards breakfast for
exceptional effort in being open-minded, risk-takers and showing tolerance during February. Take a
look at the display in the near the library to learn more! Later that morning balanced and
commitment were introduced at a school-wide assembly. Here are some things you can do at home to
encourage your child to demonstrate this attributes and attitude:
BALANCED
Students will understand the importance of intellectual, physical and emotional balance to achieve
personal well-being for themselves and others.
Activities for Parents:

Encourage your child to participate in a wide variety of structured activities.

Discuss the food groups with your child. Spend a few minutes during mealtime deciding if what
your family is eating is balanced.

Act as a role model for this attribute. Spend time as a parent or family doing many different
things.
COMMITMENT
Students should be encouraged to show commitment to their own learning, to persevere and show selfdiscipline and responsibility. Commitment to school-work, chores, sports, and other responsibilities
should be acknowledged.
