traditional literature. Folktales are made up
stories that have been passed down thru oral
storytelling, but today many traditional
Folktales have been written. We read The
Newfangled Prairie Tale already. What other
traditional folktales do you know?
The book we’re going to read today is called
Tony’s Bread. Let’s read what the author says
That was very interesting. This story explains the
creation of a traditional food in Italy. Folktales
like Tony’s Bread have common elements.
We’ve already talked about how they’ve been
around for many years. Because of this they
use literary language that helps us know they
are folktales.
about this folktale before we begin.
Display the Appendix- Elements of Folktales and read
the definition of literary language.

Literary Language established the time
frame of the distant past. Because
folktales are often from a specific place in
the world, they tend to use cultural

language as well.
Read the definition of cultural language then read the other
3 elements.
I notice how the story begins “Once a long
time ago”. This is an example of the literary
language common to folktales. We know
this isn’t a modern day story because this
example tells us that the story took place
long ago.
Folktales often have events or characters in
threes, and an element of trickery. Let’s
look for these elements in Tony’s Bread.
Fiction 3 (5)
Read the 2nd page
I notice more elements of folktales on this page.
The narrator says that Serafina is “Una piccolo
bambina” and then explains that this means a
little girl. By including these Italian words, the
author lets us know that this story is set in Italy,
and we can begin to hear the characters’ voices.
This page also has an illustration of 3 women
dressed alike in black. Who are these women?
They are Serafina’s 3 aunts. I remember that
many folktales use the Magic #3, just like these
3 aunts. We also learn of the problem. Tony
won’t let anyone marry Serafina.
Fiction 3 (6)
Read until the secret letter arrives to Serafina
~It looks like Angelo is going to trick Tony,
doesn’t it? This would be an example of the
element of trickery that we talked about.
