(1)Launching Grade 2 Lesson 8 (2)Launching Grade 2 Lesson 8 We’ve already talked about proper discussion etiquette, such as being good listeners, expressing our ideas clearly, using inside voices, building on others’ ideas, and using appropriate language. Today we’re going to talk a little more about how to carry on our discussions. We’ll do this by learning to use the text to provide specific evidence to support our ideas and dive further into what we’re thinking. If we have doubts about what we want to express, we can go back and clarify our questions in the text and answer our questions in conversation. Today we’re going to read King of the Playground by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor. During the read I’m going to model some good discussion practices, and afterwards we are going to practice turning ant talking with our partners about what happened in the book. (3)Launching (4)Launching Grade 2 Lesson 8 This book is about Kevin and Sammy. Sammy is a playground bully. Point to Kevin and then to Sammy, soliciting the appropriate class response. I think you’re right. The boy with the red hair looks like he’s probably Sammy, the bully. Let’s see what Kevin does. Grade 2 Lesson 8 Read through the page that begins “I’d be kicking my feet…” Here are some good ways that we can start and continue our conversation. Using our good discussion guidelines (take turns, listen carefully, build on each others’ ideas and speak clearly) Display the Appendix “Let’s Talk” I’ll begin- I noticed that Kevin’s father wasn’t mad about Sammy’s threats. I think he’s helping Kevin realize something. Explain Fishbowl Game: I have three chairs that will be the fishbowl. One chair will be empty. I’ll sit in a chair and one of you will sit in a chair. Then we will begin the conversation. If you have something to add, come sit in the empty chair. After I talk, I will leave the fishbowl and someone else can join the conversation. Ask for a volunteer Direct yourself to the other student: Do you agree? Allow student to respond. If no one joins the conversation in the fishbowl, call on someone and leave your chair empty. (5)Launching (6)Launching Grade 2 Lesson 8 Finish reading the book. Things certainly changed with Sammy and Kevin. Let’s use our conversation starters and the fishbowl to talk about it. I think Kevin’s behavior was perfect. He realized that Sammy was all talk and not really a bully. What do you think? Let’s keep this conversation going in the fishbowl game. Grade 2 Lesson 8 (divide the class up into two or three small groups) Use the conversation starters from the Let’s Talk! Chart to say whether you agree or disagree, discuss other parts of the story that you noticed, talk about how you feel about either of the characters or make any other observations that you would like to share. Circulate around the room, if someone is stuck intervene and model a conversation starter.
