(1)Launching Grade 2 Lesson 6 We’ve been reading poems from the book Nasty Bugs and we are making sure we read by going back and asking ourselves questions. Today we are going to read another poem called Termite Tune and we’re going to learn to use the strategy of visualization to help us fully understand what we read. Visualization is a strategy in which readers use the words they are reading to create pictures in their minds. By using the words we read to paint pictures in our minds we are able to more clearly follow what is happening and understand the author’s message. (2)Launching Grade 2 Lesson 6 Before I begin reading, I want you to close your eyes and think about the pictures the words create in your mind. Read Termite Tune before showing the illustrations. After reading, show the picture Oh my, I don’t want termites in my home! In this lesson we will focus on descriptive words and how to create a movie in our mind. Look at this picture, what do you see…. This illustration is like a scene from a horror movie in which termites are attacking. What words match this image… let’s find them. (3)Launching (4)Launching Grade 2 Lesson 6 *******Stop after kitchen stool This scene conjures up images of termites devouring everything made of wood inside the house! But the poem has many other scenes, just like a movie. Let’s read the poem again to notice some of the specific details and how they create images in our minds. Grade 2 Lesson 6 *******After the kids have shared Those are great images and you did a fantastic job of sharing. I noticed that most of you took turns talking to your partner about the images this poem created. That’s a good rule to follow. Today we’re going to think about the things we can do in order to continue to have successful sharing times. Reread the poem, stopping after each complete sentence, and invite kids to share their images in their mind. (5)Launching Grade 2 Lesson 6 For our discussion time, I would like us to stop and reflect upon the important rules that we follow during group discussions and turn and talks. In order to gain more info from sharing and discussion times readers follow guidelines for collaborative and purposeful conversations. Let’s take a look at some of those guidelines. Apx 1 (6)Launching Grade 2 Lesson 6 Great job, now as we continue our reading of new and exciting texts, I want you to think about other rules or guidelines that you as a listener or speaker think are important and that will help us share and discuss our feelings about what we have read.
