A Prayer for Mothers
Loving God, as a Mother gives
life and nourishment to her children,
so you watch over your Church.
Bless these women, that they may
be strengthened as Christian Mothers.
Let the example of their faith
and love shine forth.
Grant that we, their sons and
daughters, may honour them always
with a spirit of profound respect.
Grant this through Christ our Lord.
AMEN
Administrator’s Message…
Spring is here and it’s one of the favourite times of the year. There’s an energy of new growth
and rebirth in the air as we shed our ‘winter layers’ and live in the Easter promise. In the month
of April, we celebrated the virtue of Love, and in May, we focus on the virtue of Acceptance.
April was another busy and exciting month here at St. Catherine of Siena. We celebrated the
Lenten season as a community of faith with our Stations of the Cross and Easter Tuesday
celebrations. These were followed by two outstanding Virtue assemblies on Love. As a
community of giving, we were able to donate over $350 to ShareLife through our Pretzel and
Shrove Tuesday Breakfast fundraisers, and another $1400 was raised for Canadian Cancer
Research through the Daffodil campaign. We also had an EQAO Parent Information Meeting, a
school wide waste audit, Junior Achievement workshops for our grade eight students, an Artist
in the School presentation (Dances from Brazil) for all of our students, our Feast of St.
Catherine of Siena celebration, and the month ended with our Spring Show ‘Setting the World
on Fire – Celebrating Diversity’ featuring the many talents of our junior and intermediate
students.
The month of May promises to be another lively month. We will be celebrating Catholic
Education Week, which kicks off in all parishes on Sunday, May 3. Activities this month include:
our choir participating in ‘We are One’ @ Celebration Square, Michael Wade author
presentation, Crowning of Mary Celebration, Joe Sax Event, Conversation Club Open House,
French Cafe, Hats Off 2 Kids Walk, Virtue Assemblies, a Gr. 6 trip to Ripley’s, and EQAO. We
will also be having Game On, a program for some of our gr. 7&8 boys, and KidsNow, a
program for our Gr. 6 students, beginning this month. We will also watch our grade two and
eight students celebrate the Sacraments of Holy Communion and Confirmation.
Yours in Catholic Education,
G. Pedroso and R. Scicluna

Virtue of the Month: Acceptance
God wants us to make friends with everyone no
matter how different they may look or act.
The virtue of ACCEPTANCE means we accept
ourselves and others just the way we are. God created
all of us in His image, and God does not make
mistakes. Being part of Gods family means that we love
and welcome everyone just the way Jesus did.
Sometimes we find ourselves in situations where it is
easier to follow the crowd than to stand up for what we
know is right. However, Jesus wants us to accept
everyone even when it is hard.
Our Daily Prayer for May:
Let us pray for the virtue of acceptance - the strength to
trust that God is at work in everyone's life despite what
we think.

Ontario Catholic School Graduate
Expectations
Distinctive expectations for
graduates of Catholic schools
are determined and shaped by
the vision and destiny of the
human person emerging from
our faith tradition. Catholic
education views human life as an
integration of body, mind, and
spirit. Rooted in this vision,
Catholic education fosters the
search for knowledge as a
lifelong spiritual and academic
quest.
The Graduate is expected to be:
1. A discerning believer formed in the Catholic Faith
community who celebrates the signs and sacred mystery
of God's presence through word, sacrament, prayer,
forgiveness, reflection and moral living.
2. An effective communicator who speaks, writes and
listens honestly and sensitively, responding critically in
light of gospel values.
3. A reflective, creative and holistic thinker who
solves problems and makes responsible decisions with
an informed moral conscience for the common good.
4. A self-directed, responsible, lifelong learner who
develops and demonstrates their God-given potential.
5. A collaborative contributor who finds meaning,
dignity and vocation in work which respects the rights of
all and contributes to the common good.
6. A caring family member who attends to family,
school, parish, and the wider community.
7. A responsible citizen who gives witness to Catholic
social teaching by promoting peace, justice and the
sacredness of human life.

Grade 8 Confirmation
Catholic Education Week
Our Grade 8 students have been
preparing all year, with the help of their
teachers and staff at the church for the
reception of the Sacrament of
Confirmation. This is a special moment
in the student’s spiritual journey as they
are confirmed with the gift of the Holy
Spirit. The celebration will be
Wednesday, May 27 at 7 p.m. at the St. Catherine of
Siena Church. The students are now seen as young
adults in the Church. It is our hope that they continue
their spiritual journey and maintain and nurture the
relationship they have developed with God.
This year’s celebration entitled
“Catholic Education: Exploring
Paths of Joy” is scheduled for the
week of May 3 – May 8, 2015. The
scriptural passage that guides our
theme is: “Were not our hearts
burning within us while He was
talking to us on the road?” Luke

Lost and Found Clothing
Class Placements 2015
During Education Week (May 5-9) we will be spreading
out clothes from the Lost and Found on tables in the
hallway. If your child has lost
any clothing throughout the
year, we ask that you please
look through these clothes and
take what was lost. Clothes left
behind will be donated.
The staff of St. Catherine of Siena will
meet during the month of May to begin
discussing an appropriate placement for
each student for next year. When
determining placement, some of the
criteria we consider are:
ShareLife Fundraiser
This year, St. Catherine of
Siena was able to raise
over $330 for ShareLife.
As part of a school wide
Lenten project, we held a Shrove Tuesday breakfast and
sold pretzels. Money raised will be used to help the less
fortunate.
Student Dress Code
Board Policy states that all
students are expected to dress
in clean, neat and practical
attire. Appropriate attire is the
criterion for acceptable dress
that most often reflects our
attitude toward any given situation. The expectation here
is that we avoid recreational wear such as: tank tops,
halter tops, muscle shirts, tube tops, spaghetti straps,
short shorts, cut offs, hats/headgear, wallet chains and
shirts with inappropriate logos/symbols. The items are
contrary to both the philosophy of our Catholic schools
and the standards that we set as parents and educators.
Hats Off 2 Kidz
Our school will be
participating in a Hats Off 2
Kidz walk. It will be held the
morning of Friday, May 8,
2015. The primary and junior
grades will be walking in the school playground and on
the field while the intermediates will be walking in the
neighborhood just behind and to the north of the school
(Confederation Parkway to Paisley Boulevard to
Hurontario Street). Students will be supervised at all
times. To show support for children who lose their hair
during cancer treatments, all students are encouraged to
wear baseball caps or hats that day and they will have
permission to wear them indoors too. A donation of $1
will be collected from each student during the week of
May 4-8 in support of leukemia research being done by
The Hospital for Sick Children (Sick Kids). Every child
who brings in a donation will receive a card to write their
name on and these cards will be displayed on our Hats
Off 2 Kidz wall. Let’s join together and give a kid a
reason to SMILE!

Placement history
If you have any concerns about your child’s class
placement for September, please complete the attached
‘Parent Input for Class Placement’. You are asked to
return these forms to Mrs. Pedroso and/or Mr. Scicluna.
Please refrain from making a request for a specific
teacher as staffing is always tentative and changes
often take place between the time of tentative class
placement and September. Our decisions are made after
careful consideration of all relevant information and are
based on the individual strengths and needs of each
child. All forms must be in by May 1, 2015.
Daffodil Day
April is the month to
fight back against
Cancer! We at St.
Catherine of Siena
banded together to offer our support and donations
to the Canadian Cancer Society to the sound of
$1400. On April 30, students participated in Daffodil Day
by wearing a “Join the Fight” sticker or a Daffodil pin.
Students wore their sticker or pin, along with the colour
yellow, to help show their support for all Canadians living
with cancer. “To some, the daffodil is just a flower. To
us, it is a symbol of strength and courage. It says we will
not give up.”

Concussion Policy and Protocol
Dufferin-Peel Catholic
District School Board has
developed a Concussion
Policy and Guidelines for
students. Anytime a
student reports to the office
with a head injury, the
parent/guardian will be
contacted and the incident will be entered into the
school’s Head Injuries log. Your child will be given an
information pamphlet entitled “We want to give you a
heads up…Concussions are serious.” This pamphlet,
attached, outlines the signs and symptoms of
concussions; it does not mean your child does or does
not have a concussion. It includes information about
what to do if you suspect your child has a concussion
and how a concussion is treated. School staff cannot
diagnose a concussion. If your child has been
diagnosed with a concussion by either a medical doctor
or nurse practitioner there is a procedure we are to
follow. Guidelines have been developed by DufferinPeel CDSB to support a 10-phase “Return to Activity”
process following a diagnosed concussion. These
guidelines include 5 phases for “Return to Learn”
followed by 5 phases for “Return to Play”. With parental
consent, school administration will work collaboratively
with school psychology staff to monitor your child’s
progress through the 10 phases. For more information,
please contact the school.
Sir John A MacDonald
Congratulations to Maureen in
Mrs. Torun’s grade eight class who finished in third at
Mississauga South’s Sir John A. Macdonald multi-media
contest. The contest was for students to produce a
reflective piece showcasing their knowledge and
understanding of the life and times of Canada’s first
Prime Minister. “It is important that we, as Canadians,
not only be aware of, but understand the context of our
history,” said John B. Kostoff, director of education.
PSYCH 5 TO THRIVE
Psych 5 to Thrive
consists of five fact
sheets that serve as an
introduction to five
strategies to help students thrive at school and at home.
These facts sheets are available on the school website,

sleep and eat a good breakfast in order to ensure the
highest degree of success. Please provide your child
with an extra beverage (water bottle) to help keep
him/her hydrated during the day and throughout the test.
We will also be providing an extra snack in class during
each of the tests days for all students.
Outdoor Learning Space – Opened
Some great news, our Outdoor
Learning Space is officially
open. Father Lando blessed
our learning space at an
opening ceremony Friday, April
17. The learning space will be
used by all classes during the
day, and provides a space for
our intermediates during recess time.
Everyone benefits from learning outdoors, especially
young people. Benefits of getting outdoors include:
o Improved mood and happier students
o Enhanced appreciation for the outdoors
o Increased retention rate for subject material
o Lowered school violence and bullying, and improved
social skills
o Community engagement for outdoor spaces that are
used beyond the school community.

The Joe Sax Festival (UPDATE)
The Online Reporting Tool
This year ten students from
St. Catherine of Siena will
participate in The Joe Sax
Festival on Wednesday, May
6 at Iona Secondary School.
The theme of the event is
Together We Sparkle: One
World Rooted in Acceptance
and Love. The aim of the
Festival is to offer interactive
sports activities and
collaborative games to a diverse team of students as a
means of fostering healthy minds, healthy bodies,
positive social interactions and an inclusive experience.
As a team (together everyone achieves more) every
child will experience success. In partnership with the
PAN AM GAMES’ IGNITE initiative, once again this
year, we will create our own special PAN AM /
PARAPAN AM themed event and receive support from
Ignite in various activities. This exciting event will also
include a special appearance by the Mascots from our
Mississauga South Secondary Schools.
The Dufferin-Peel Catholic
District School board has
developed a new way to
help nurture a safe, caring
and inclusive school
environment. The Online Reporting Tool is intended for
students in grades 3 – 8 who become aware of bullying
incidents and negative behaviours. The student can
simply ‘click’ on the link found on our school’s website to
fill out the report. The report will then be directly emailed
to the principal and/or vice principal and will be dealt with
accordingly. It is important to recognize that the Online
Reporting Tool is an alternate reporting option. It is best
practice to speak directly with a responsible adult at
home and/or in the school.
2015 Annual Offence Declaration
for Volunteers
On our school website, in the Parents
section, you’ll find a copy the school’s
2015 Annual Offence Declaration
for Volunteers. This declaration
saves parents from completing
another Criminal Reference Check, if done within the
year. If you have a Criminal Reference Check here at
the school, we’re asking you to please complete, sign
and submit this declaration to the office.
We're very thankful and appreciative of everyone’s
commitment and support to the students of St. Catherine
of Siena!
If you're interested in helping at the school, and do not
have a Criminal Reference Check, we are more than
happy to give you the necessary forms to be signed and
completed. Criminal Reference Checks are free of
charge for volunteers. All volunteers, including those
going on one day school trips, must have a Criminal
Reference Check completed by the Peel Police.
School Council
Next Meeting: Wednesday,
June 3 at 7 p.m.
Communication between home and school is greatly
enhanced by parental involvement with the Catholic
School Council. All parents/guardians are
encouraged to come out to meetings and participate.
Breakfast for Kids
The Breakfast Club provides meals/snacks
for any students every morning beginning
at 8 a.m. in the school’s Breakfast Room.
All students are welcome.
Let’s Wash Our Hands
Hand washing when done correctly is
the single most effective way to prevent
the spread of infectious diseases such
as the flu. Please help us to reinforce
the proper techniques with your child.
1) Wet our hands
2) Soap our hands
3) Wash our hands
4) Rinse our hands
5) Dry our hands
6) Use paper towels to turn taps off.
End of the day pick-up, please keep the
Doorways clear
In support of our Safe School procedures here at Siena,
we are asking the doorways at the back be kept clear
and accessible for students to make their way out to the
school yard. It is imperative that teachers are able to see
a child’s parent before allowing them to
leave (Gr. 1-3). To help with this, we ask
parents/guardians to stay well clear of
the exit doors. This is a safety concern
for our students, we want to make sure
they are not walking home alone. We ask
for your continued cooperation in this
very important safety procedure.

Electronic Devices/Valuables
Before School Hours Supervision
Students are asked not to bring to
school any valuables, items of
importance, toys, or other items
valuable to them. Examples of these
items may include (but not limited to)
Game Boys, expensive sports equipment,
cell phones, MP3 players, trading cards, cameras, etc.
The school will not assume responsibility for the
care and loss of these items. Cell phones, MP3
players, Ipods, digital cameras and all PEDs are not to
be used on school property. It is against School and
Board policy to have these devices on school property or
at any school sanctioned event.
For your child’s safety, we request that children not be
on school property until supervision begins at 8:45 a.m.
Pediculosis (Head Lice)
Head lice are always present in the
community, and are not a reflection of a
child’s cleanliness. By checking your
child’s head once a week for head lice,
you will catch it early and treat it before it
has a chance to spread. If cases are found in the school,
we shall inform all parents. If your child does have head
lice, we ask you to keep them out of school until after
they have been treated and their hair is entirely clear of
both lice and nits (eggs.) Any infected student will need
to be checked before re-entry to class. A reminder to
refrain from sharing hats at any time, but especially
during the winter months.
Attendance and Punctuality
All students are expected to attend
school regularly and punctually. In the
event that your child will be late or
absent, please call the school and
follow the prompts to leave a
message. This can be done 24 hours
a day. For students who are absent and for whom a call
is not received, we will attempt to contact you.
PLEASE CALL: 905-277-2448 Press # 1
Please leave the following information:




Date of the absence
Student’s full name
Grade level and teacher
Reason for absence
Lunch Drop-Off
With the front door policy (locked), we encourage
students to bring their lunches with them in the morning.
If you are delivering your child’s lunch
to the school, we will open the doors at
noon. Please do not block the
doorway, and have your child’s lunch
labeled with their name and class, and
place it on the lunch table.
Please be reminded that the lunch hour is from
12:03 p.m. – 1:03 p.m. Where children stay for lunch
they will eat with their classmates and remain on school
property.
Lunch Time - Students Signing Out
Only students in grades 7 and 8 having a note may signout at lunch without a parent/guardian being present.
Students in K-6 who do not regularly go home for lunch
must be signed out with a parent/guardian.
Anaphylaxis Reaction Reminder
As there are a number of
students in our school who
have a severe life threatening
allergy to nuts, we ask our
families to refrain from
sending to school any food, etc. that contains nut
products (i.e. peanut butter sandwiches, snacks with
nuts, etc.). While we cannot guarantee a “Nut Free” or
“Allergen Free” environment, you can help to reduce the
risk to our students by not sending in peanuts, nuts of
any kind, products containing nuts, nut oil, or nut byproducts, foods that MAY have come in contact with nuts
or nut products and fast food or commercial snacks (i.e.
Timbits) where ingredients are unclear. Thank you!
Medical Concerns
If the bell has rung, all students (Gr. 1‐8) who may be late, are to go to the back of the school and join a line. If there are no students, and the doors are closed you are to come to the front of the school and obtain a Late Slip. If your son / daughter has any
medical concerns, please ensure
that you inform the school.
Information may be shared
directly with the classroom
teacher / office. If medication is
required, forms will be sent for
completion by parents and the
family doctor. All information is
held in confidence.

Hope to see you there and thank
you once again for encouraging
the love of reading.
If you currently live outside the school boundary and are
attending St. Catherine of Siena on a flex boundary
request, you will need to request flex boundary for next
year. The “Flexible Boundary” procedure is
reviewed annually. Please note that flex boundaries
will be looked at on a case by case basis and are not
guaranteed from year to year. If you are requesting flex
boundary, please note that transportation is your
responsibility. The Board will not provide either
transportation or additional supervision for students
admitted under this procedure. Note, the students
admitted under this procedure do not automatically
become eligible for the Secondary School serving the
school. A separate request must be made to the
Secondary School Principal.

to Thrive
Schools and families share a common goal: ensuring student success.
Psychology staff at Dufferin-Peel work together with schools and families to promote student
achievement, mental health and well-being. Our new PSYCH 5 TO THRIVE initiative offers 5
strategies to help students thrive at school and at home.
Each one called by name (Isaiah 43:1)
Healthy Sleep, Happy Child
Getting a good night’s sleep can help you and your child be your best at work and play. Here are 5 tips
for healthy sleep for the whole family!
Follow a routine: Go to bed and get up at the same time each day—even on
weekends! Create a regular nighttime routine—it lets your body know it’s time to go
to sleep. If you have to take a nap, try to make sure it ends before late afternoon.
Watch what you eat and drink: Avoid caffeine (coffee, black or green teas,
chocolate, pop, etc.) 6-8 hours before bedtime. Don’t go to bed with a stomach that
is too empty or too full—both can interfere with sleep.
Stay Active: Get regular exercise—it improves restful sleep. But avoid rigorous
exercise right before bedtime.
Relax: Listen to relaxing music, read alone or together, or try relaxation exercises
(e.g., muscle relaxation, deep breathing, imagery). Take a warm bath 90 minutes
before bedtime. The heat will raise your body temperature, and when it drops again
it will help you feel sleepy.
Unplug: Keep the bedroom quiet, dark, and cool. Electronic devices can interfere
with sleep. The light cues your brain to wake up. Turn devices off at least one hour
before bedtime.

Ideas
In probability situations, one
can never be sure what will
happen next.
Try this game during a car ride:
Call out events and have your child decide
whether it is something likely, is not likely or
will never happen. You are limited only by
your imagination! (e.g., we will swim in
January, a dinosaur is coming to the local zoo,
the leaves will change colour in the fall)
Probabilityfrom4‐6
Experimental Probability (a real‐life experience): Suppose we have three pairs of socks in a drawer, one blue pair, one green pair, and one red pair. What is the probability of getting a matching pair if we reach into the drawer and, without looking, pick two socks? Theoretical Probability (based on analyzing what could happen): Suppose you have three pairs of socks in the laundry, one blue pair, one green pair, and one red pair. Now suppose that somehow four socks disappear. Which is more likely: that the two socks that are left will match or that they will not match? Elementary Mathematics Program Team
