We began the month with our French Café and the Intermediate Heads Up competition. This was followed by a very exciting Catholic Education Week, that included our Crowning of Mary celebration, the Joe Sax festival, our Sounds of Siena show highlighting the many talents of our students, a Hats Off 2 Kids Walk raising over $400 for Sick Kids hospital, and two beautiful Virtue assemblies. The month also saw us celebrate in the Sacraments of First Holy Communion and Confirmation with our grades two and eight students. We also had our Welcome to Kindergarten evening, welcoming 60 new students and their families to our school. Our Junior Division enjoyed a day at the movies, watching Rio 2 in 3D. The month ended with our second Movie Night of the year, when families came together to watch Muppets Most Wanted. As we come to the end of another school year, we would like to take this opportunity to thank the many individuals who make St. Catherine of Siena School a very active, engaging, and safe place to be. This past year has been a very busy and highly successful year for everyone. The many successes are due to the dynamic and warm relationships that exist at St. Catherine of Siena School between staff, parents and students. We would especially like to thank the teachers here at St. Catherine of Siena, who help our students learn the skills to be lifelong learners and to walk in the light of Christ. Thank you as well to Mrs. Waugh and Mrs. Jones for their warm and welcoming personalities. Every person who enters through our doors is treated with dignity and respect. Thank you to Mrs. Paisana, Mrs. Ferko, and Mr. Rebagliatti for keeping our school looking amazing. Thank you to Mrs. Lotito, Mrs. Omrow, and Mr. Bascombe for all their work with the Breakfast Club. Thank you to Fr. Lando and his Parish team for providing the spiritual leadership in our faith journey. Thank you to Bruno Iannicca, our trustee, for all his support this year and thank you to our superintendent, David Amaral, for always being there for us. To our graduates, and those students who are moving on, thank you for enriching us with your presence, and we hope that St. Catherine of Siena will always be a part of your memories. We hope that everyone has a safe and restful summer and we look forward to seeing you in September. God Bless, G. Pedroso and R. Scicluna Many Hands, Many Lands, One Heart, One God 1 Virtue of the Month: Fairness When we spend a lot of time immersed in a variety of different media – TV, movie, magazine, radio we can sometimes forget that life is not a competition. We are made by God to live together, to share and to help each other. You can’t be a Christian alone. Christianity is all about living together in community – ideally, one big happy family. When the urge to be superior takes over a person’s life then fairness can go out the window. Fairness, the belief that everyone deserves an opportunity to succeed, is not always about making things exactly equal. Some people need a bit more time, space, money, and support to have an equal chance to succeed. And they deserve that chance. Our Daily Prayer for June: Let us now pray for the virtue of fairness - the desire to live by the rules of God’s kingdom everyday of our lives. From the perspective of the Catholic Graduate Expectations, a fair person... Listens to all sides before forming opinions Shows good sportsmanship at all times Refuses to twist rules to avoid consequences Works to bring about peaceful solutions to problems Cheers on the successes of others Can balance their own rights and responsibilities with those of others I do not mean that there should be relief for others and pressure on you, but it is a question of a fair balance between your present abundance and their Dates: need, so that their abundance may be for your need, School Reconciliation – December 9 in order that there may be a fair balance. (2 Cor. School’s Advent Mass – December 12 8:13-14) Please note: All Virtue information is included in the front pages of your child’s agenda. Parish Information: St. Catherine of Siena 2340 Hurontario St., Mississauga, ON L5B 1N1 T: 905-272-1454 E: office@stcatherine.ca Dates: June 10 June 24 Year End/Graduation Mass Graduation Ceremony in Church Hall First Holy Communion: On Saturday, May 10, many of our grade 2 students received Jesus in First Holy Communion. They were like little angles, so happy to receive Jesus in their souls. We pray that as they continue to grow in their faith, they will be able to receive Jesus in Holy Communion every week. Congratulations! Confirmation: On Wednesday, May 28, the grade 8 students celebrated the Sacrament of Confirmation. It was a solemn and beautiful ceremony witnessed by staff, family and friends who were there to support the Confirmandi. It is the hope of the school and the Church that the newly confirmed will continue to grow in their faith and use the gifts of the Holy Spirit bestowed on them. Congratulations to all who took this first step to adulthood in their faith journey. Grade 8 Graduates To our Grade 8 graduates, best wishes as you leave us to enter high school. Your accomplishments and contributions to our school are appreciated and will be fondly remembered. Continue to be the best that you can be, and influence one another in a most positive way. We feel very privileged to have crossed your path. Congratulations from the staff and students of St. Catherine of Siena Catholic School. Graduation Ceremony Grade eight graduation activities will take place on Thursday, June 24, 2014. Students will leave to Le Treport Banquet Hall for lunch and a dance, returning back to the school for 4:30 p.m. The Graduation Ceremony (certificates, awards, and liturgy) will take place at the Church Hall beginning at 7:30 p.m. All parents and family are encouraged to attend the Graduation Ceremony. PA Day A reminder to all parents that Monday, June 9, 2014 will be a P.A Day for all students, as teachers will be engaged in a variety of Assessment and Evaluations throughout the day. Many Hands, Many Lands, One Heart, One God 2 Farewell EQAO Grade 6 Testing Best wishes to Mrs. Seetahal who will be leaving St. Catherine of Siena to take a position at St. Gerrad. The EQAO (Education Quality and Accountability Office) testing of our Grade 6 students is rapidly approaching. Best wishes to Mr. Thrasher, Mr. Evans, Mr. Vidot, Mr. Mintz, Ms. Jenkins and Ms. Ciuriak, as they continue in their careers, providing quality education to the students they serve. They have successfully filled the roles of Long Term Occasional teachers for staff members on various leaves of absences. In totality, their contributions, both inside the classroom and in the various activities and initiatives throughout the school community, have provided a substantial benefit to our school. They will all be fondly remembered and missed, as they continue to have a positive impact on the lives of the children and families that they meet in their roles as Catholic educators for Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board. We know that you will join us in thanking them for the outstanding work they have done here at St. Catherine of Siena School, and extending our best wishes for continued success. Get Ready! For Secondary School – Summer Transition Program As part of successful transition planning for grade 8-to-9 students, the ‘Get Ready! for Secondary’ Summer Program is one of the foremost innovations within the DPCDSB. This 20 hour program blends Literacy and Numeracy focused instruction with Secondary School Readiness Activities that help to welcome and prepare the student for their secondary school experience. The program, which is a joint project between the Program Department and Continuing Education, allows students entering Grade 9 to get to know their secondary school, in particular their teachers (i.e. caring adult) before attending classes in September. As a result, the program unique to Dufferin-Peel eases the grade 8-to-9 transition for students and parents alike as their confidence, comfort level, and awareness of secondary programs and pathways are significantly amplified before they enter Secondary School. The program will take place at St. Martin Catholic Secondary School and will run from August 25 - 28 from the hours of 8:20 - 1:00 except on the 28th as the day will end at 12:00. For any further details please refer to the St. Martin Catholic Secondary School Website or feel free to contact Mr. Silvestri at 905-279-3171 ext. 76051 Test Dates are June 3, 4, 5 (a.m. only), and 6 (a.m. only) Please try to avoid scheduling any doctor’s appointments or anything else that will take your child out of school during the testing dates. Students will complete the three tests during these four days. The tests will be administered in the morning and early in the afternoon. Students will not receive homework during these test days, although they are encouraged to continue with their daily reading each evening. We encourage the students to get plenty of sleep and eat a good breakfast in order to ensure the highest degree of success. Please provide your child with an extra beverage (water bottle) to help keep him/her hydrated during the day and throughout the test. We will also be providing an extra snack in class during each of the tests days for all students. Provincial Elections St. Catherine of Siena will be a polling station for Provincial Elections on June 12, 2014. Provincial elections are scheduled every four years. During a provincial election, you elect a Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) to represent you in the Legislative Assembly. There are 107 electoral districts in Ontario, which are sometimes also called "ridings." Your electoral district has an elected MPP who speaks for you and everyone who lives in your electoral district. When all the MPPs meet in the Legislative Assembly, they make the laws that govern Ontario. When a provincial election is called, individuals who want to represent you and your area as MPPs put their names forward to run as candidates. These individuals will either represent the views of a political party or will run independently. Report Cards The report card for Term 2 will be going home on Wednesday, June 25, 2014. Because our staffing is tentative, the Provincial Report Card will only state the grade level for next year. It will not contain the room number or teacher; this information will be shared with students in September. Many Hands, Many Lands, One Heart, One God 3 Siena Awards Award Winners! Personal Electronic Devices When teachers notice a student(s) living out the virtues, here at school, they will give out a SIENA Award Slip to the student(s). A reminder to students and parents that the School Board has a policy regarding the use of Personal Electronic Devices on school grounds. Students in particular have become quite attached to these devices! The expectation is that no electronic devices (iPods, Mp3 players, etc…) are brought to school at all. With regard to cell phones, if your child has your permission to bring it with them to school, our clear expectation is that it is powered off and kept out of sight for the entire school day (including lunch and recess breaks). The school is not responsible for items that are lost or stolen. > K-3: Kenneth N (Prince) and Tehila (Sitas) > 4-6: Lance L. (Zador) and Sarah T. (Zador) > 7-8: Claudia W. (Torun) and Justtin H. (Tropea) These students have been acknowledged school wide through a P.A. announcement and have their picture posted on our SIENA Award / Virtue board. Teachers focused on, although not limited to, the virtue of the month. Text Books Medical Concerns If your son / daughter has any medical concerns, please ensure that you inform the school. Information may be shared directly with the classroom teacher / office. If medication is required, forms will be sent for completion by parents and the family doctor. All information is held in confidence. Storage of Medication We would like to remind all parents who have their child’s medication stored here at the school to please pick it up at the end of the school year. We do not retain medications from one year to the next. New medications and the proper forms for storage will need to be filled out for the new school year. We will send an individual reminder to all parents affected by this policy. Warm Weather Precautions During the warmer days of spring and early summer, students are advised to wear and bring sunscreen and a hat when outdoors at recess. Drinking extra water will help with hydration. Weather conditions are monitored during the school day for heat alerts and other unsafe conditions. Time and activities outdoors are adjusted according to this information. Hats Off 2 Kidz On Thursday, May 8, 2014, along with many schools across the city, we held a Walk-a-Thon in support of Leukemia Research at Sick Kids Hospital. We were able to raise $430. Together We Will. All text books must be returned to the classroom teacher by June 26. Letters for unreturned items will be sent home with students regarding the cost if lost. Thank you for your cooperation. Volunteers Make a Difference We wish to express our sincere appreciation to the many parents and members of our school community who have given generously of their time, energy and talents to benefit the students of St. Catherine of Siena School. Volunteer contributions have made a positive difference in the lives of our students. Together we make our school a success. Volunteers - Criminal Reference Checks and Annual Offence Declaration If you're interested in helping at the school, and do not have a Criminal Reference Check, we are more than happy to give you the necessary forms to be signed and completed. Criminal Reference Checks are free of charge for volunteers. All volunteers, including those going on one day school trips, must have a Criminal Reference Check completed by the Peel Police. If you have a Criminal Reference Check here at the school, we’re asking you to please complete, sign and submit 2014 Annual Offence Declaration for Volunteers. This declaration saves parents from completing another Criminal Reference Check Year End BBQ Our year end BBQ is set for Wednesday, June 18 from 5:30 – 7 p.m.. More information will be coming your way. Many Hands, Many Lands, One Heart, One God 4 Are you Ticked? Kiss ‘n’ Ride @ St. Catherine of Siena Make Sure Your School Support Designation is English Separate (Catholic). It’s a powerful message in support of Catholic education. The driveway at the front of the school is set up as our Kiss ’n’ Ride, allowing parents the opportunity to drop off and pick up their children in a safe and effective manner. To this end, the success of this requires the mutual understanding and support of all our parents to assure as smooth a transition as possible to the start and end of each day. On October 27, 2014, you will cast your vote for Catholic school trustee in the Municipal elections. Make your vote count, by ensuring you are registered as an English Separate school supporter. When you designate yourself as an English Separate school supporter, you help foster a strong political voice, through your elected representative (Trustee), in ensuring your rights to a Catholic education for the young people in our province. To verify that you are registered as an English Separate school supporter: (i) Check the assessment section of your Tax Bill or Property Assessment Notice, and (ii) Check your Voter Information Card received by mail during the month of May We can help you register or change your direction of school support. Contact the Admissions Department at 905-890-0708 ext. 24512. For more information, visit Guidelines: Follow the arrows on the driveway to the dropoff/pick-up area (in front on the Kindergarten yard). Please do not use the Bus Loading zone (right next to the sidewalk) as this area is meant for buses or emergency vehicles. Pull up as far as you can, it allows more cars to use the Kiss’n’Ride. Do Not Park or Get out of Your Vehicle in this area, even if only for a few seconds. Parents who wish to get out of the car are asked to park in the designated visitor parking in the front and at the side of the school. Students are to exit the vehicle on the passenger side (right side) Once your child has left the car, please exit right away at the south end of the school, driveway closest to the Fire Department. Please drive slowly and carefully in these lanes at all times. Please do not walk your children through the Kiss’N’Ride lanes, this can be unsafe. www.dpcdsb.org Attendance and Punctuality All students are expected to attend school regularly and punctually. In the event that your child will be late or absent, please call the school and follow the prompts to leave a message. This can be done 24 hours a day. For students who are absent and for whom a call is not received, we will attempt to contact you. PLEASE CALL: 905-277-2448 Press # 1 Please leave the following information: Date of the absence Student’s full name Grade level and teacher Reason for absence If the bell has rung, all students (Gr. 1‐8) who may be late, are to go to the back of the school and join a line. If there are no students, and the doors are closed you are to come to the front of the school and obtain a Late Slip. Before School Hours Supervision For your child’s safety, we request that children not be on school property until supervision begins at 8:45 a.m. Many Hands, Many Lands, One Heart, One God 5 Student Dress Code Board Policy states that all students are expected to dress in clean, neat and practical attire. Appropriate attire is the criterion for acceptable dress that most often reflects our attitude toward any given situation. The expectation here is that we avoid such recreational wear such as tank tops, halter tops, muscle shirts, tube tops, spaghetti straps, short shorts, cut offs, hats/headgear, wallet chains and shirts with inappropriate logos/symbols. The items are contrary to both the philosophy of our Catholic schools and the standards that we set as parents and educators. Kindergarten Drop-Off (Sidewalk clear) In support of our Safe Arrival procedures here at Siena, we are asking the sidewalk in front of the Kindergarten yard be kept clear and accessible to students making their way to the school yard. With morning traffic, it is imperative that students not be on the road, and they have a clear path on the sidewalk. To help with this, we ask that once parents/guardians drop off their children that they please move away from the sidewalk. This is a safety concern for all pedestrians, especially the students in the morning. We ask for your continued cooperation in this very important safety procedure School Council Next Meetings: Wed., June 4 at 7 p.m. Communication between home and school is greatly enhanced by parental involvement with the Catholic School Council. All parents/guardians are encouraged to come out to meetings and participate. Green News: Growing a Green Community The students of Siena have worked extremely hard this year trying to make our world a little bit more “GREEN.” Not only have we implemented new initiatives this year, but we have also continued with our previous year initiatives. Here is just a snapshot of some of the things our Green Team members have promoted: Garbage Audits A day’s worth of school garbage was collected and sorted and as a result we found a lot of paper towels were being unnecessarily used G.O.O.S Bin If paper is good on one side let’s reuse it! One and You’re Done Information gathered from the Garbage Audit initiated this campaign When washing hands, students are encouraged to dry their hands using only 1 paper towel This greatly reduces the amount of paper being used at our school Enviroman and Recyclebot These Green Team mascots continue to inform our students about Green Team news or tips L.O.L Everyday during lunchtime, students turn off the classroom lights to minimize our use of electricity and save energy Newsletter In our monthly newsletters, the Green Team shares its activities Monitors Off Students and teachers continue to turn off the computer monitors after computer use, this continues to reduce the use of PHANTOM POWER . Walk to School Wednesdays In the fall, Siena was encouraged to walk to school every Wednesday in order to reduce pollution and stay fit! . Rock Star Lunch Challenge In December, students were encouraged to pack a Rock Star lunch including at least 3 reusable containers At the end of the week we packed over 1,500 Rock Star Lunches. Way to go Siena! Ecoschool Presentations Throughout the year classes participated in a variety of workshops promoting Green Living Eco-Fair The grade 6 classes did a phenomenal job yet again educating the Siena community on many different ways we can make a difference and be true stewards of God’s creation! Big Crunch Day Students eagerly participated in this event and made a loud crunch as they ate healthy and/or locally grown snacks Big Gulp Students took a huge gulp from their reusable container and helped to minimize the amount of plastic water bottles being used. It has been a fantastic year! A great big thank you to all the students and staff that have helped us make all these wonderful initiatives a success! Enjoy your summer and G-O-O-O GREEN! Many Hands, Many Lands, One Heart, One God 6 Communication In an effort to be more environmentally responsible, St. Catherine of Siena School provides information electronically to families through our school website and through direct email to students’ homes. We will be able to send you our school newsletter, as well as any important updates, efficiently and effectively if we have your email address. Of course, should you prefer not to give us your email address, we will provide a paper copy of the newsletter to your child to bring home. Thank you to the many parents and guardians who chose to have our newsletter emailed to them. Are You Moving If you are planning a move, or have already moved, please let us know. If you are moving to a new school we will give you a Transfer Form to take with you to the new school. We will be preparing classes for September 2014 and this information will be helpful in determining class sizes. In the past we have had to reorganize our classes in September due to unexpected transfers. If you currently live outside the school boundary and are attending St. Catherine of Siena on a flex boundary request, you will need to request flex boundary for next year. The “Flexible Boundary” procedure is reviewed annually. Please note that flex boundaries will be looked at on a case by case basis and are not guaranteed from year to year. If you are requesting flex boundary, please note that transportation is your responsibility. The Board will not provide either transportation or additional supervision for students admitted under this procedure. Note, the students admitted under this procedure do not automatically become eligible for the Secondary School serving the school. A separate request must be made to the Secondary School Principal. Opening Day Procedures September 2014 The first day of school can be hectic for students – especially if they are new to our school, and our opening day procedures! On the first day of school, staff will be outside wearing safety vests, and will have signs indicating grade levels. Students will assemble in front of the appropriate grade level and will be directed into a classroom for room allocation. In this way, classes are quickly established, students are matched with their teacher, and everyone proceeds to their specific classroom. See you on Tuesday, September 2, 2014. 2014-2015 School Calendar Please access the link on our school website, www.dpcdsb.org/SIENA, to view the school calendar for elementary and secondary schools. Information also attached. Opening BBQ St. Catherine of Siena Opening BBQ is tentatively scheduled to take place on Thursday, September 18, 2014. This event is a wonderful way to meet other members of the school community, teachers, administration, parents and students alike. It would be an outstanding opportunity to meet Catholic School Council Members, hear about the role, and consider putting forth your name for nominations. Picture Day The school photographer will be Edge Imaging. Photographs of students will take place on Monday, September 22, 2014. All JK to Grade 8 students will have their picture taken in the morning or afternoon. Terry Fox Run The National School Terry Fox run takes place Thursday, September 26, 2014.
