VIRTUES We are called as Catholics to put into practice, and model for others, the teachings of Christ through our words and actions. Throughout Dufferin Peel, we will be integrating virtues formation into all areas of our school life within the context of our faith. The “Virtues Program” reinforces the qualities of positive character development, with a specific virtue being highlighted each month: September - Faith October - Empathy November – Conscience December – Hope January – Self-Control February –Respect March – Kindness April – Love May – Acceptance June – Fairness Combined Classes/ Reorganization: As the population of St. Vincent de Paul School declines, combined grades continue to be a necessary reality at our school. This is a reality in many schools in the Mississauga East Family. As teachers prepare class lists they consider many factors, such as learning styles of students, a balance of abilities, and class culture. Being in a combined grade is in no way prejudicial to a child’s education. Within Ontario, all schools are bound by a strict teacher: pupil ratio. This will be particularly evident as we strive to meet the hard cap of 20:1 in the primary grades and the guidelines of 26:1 in grades four to eight. Until we finalize our enrolment in midSeptember, all class arrangements and teacher placements will be tentative. Please see the memos from the Board: “Elementary School Organizations Plans for 2013-2014 and “An Introduction to Combined Grades.” . Safe Arrival Program For safety reasons, it is very important to notify the School by calling 905 848-5397 Absence Line if your child is going to be absent or late. This communication is vital to ensure the safety of your child. If we do not hear from you Mrs. Ferenc, our secretary will be calling to verify your child’s absence. Student Verification Forms We appreciate your co-operation in keeping us up-to-date regarding pertinent information for your child i.e. changes in address, telephone numbers etc. Accurate information is vital should we need to contact you in an emergency situation. Please ensure that you complete and return the Student Verification Forms that will be sent home with your child early next week. Emergency Evacuations Staff and students regularly practice emergency evacuation and lockdown procedures. These include: a safe exit from the building in the event of a fire, and safety actions in the event of an intruder or bomb threat. If an evacuation requires us to relocate, our alternate location is John Cabot Secondary or Westminster Church. Physical Education Participation As required by the Dufferin-Peel CDSB students are required to complete this permission form, informing us of any prior injuries or physical limitations or concerns. Your son/daugher’s teacher will be sending these home for you to complete. School Council Corner: Elections The Catholic School Advisory Council shall include, but not be limited to: Parents and guardians of children in the school A community representative from the Parish in which the school is located The school Principal A teacher assigned to the school A non-teaching staff member assigned to the school Nominations forms for the parent/guardian representatives will be available at the main office beginning Sept. 15, 2014. Completed nomination forms must be received by the main office by 4:00 pm on Thursday September 19, 2014. The election will take place if necessary on Thursday September 19, 2014 between the hours of 6:30 and 7:00 pm by secret ballot. Eligible voters must vote in person and proxy voting is not permitted. An election will be held if the number of candidates extends beyond the number of positions. If not, the candidates shall be acclaimed. Our first Council meeting will be in early Thursday, September 25, 2014 at 7:00 pm. We are also in search of anyone willing to help out at specific times during the year, such as helping to distribute pizza on pizza days, sub days, Fundraising Committees, etc. Please call the school to leave your name or share your name with us at our Curriculum Night or at a Council meeting. Kiss and Ride Please do not park or leave your car when driving your child(ren) to school. For the safety of all please follow the parking rules Program & Curriculum Open House/Curriculum Night – our annual Open House/Curriculum Night will be held on Thursday, October 2, 2014. This event will take place from 5:45-7:15 pm. This is an opportunity for you to meet your child’s new teacher(s) and learn about their programs. All parents/guardians are encouraged to attend this event. HEALTH & SAFETY Medication & Allergies Please make the school aware of any important medical information regarding your son/daughter in order that we can properly prepare in the event of an emergency. For the safety of all children, medication must be stored in a safe place. Forms must be completed by your doctor in order to distribute medication. Food Allergies and Birthday’s In addition, several children suffer from a life-threatening allergy to peanut, nut products, and egg allergies. With this in mind, please do not bring any treats to the school for a child’s birthday. A better alternative would be pencil gifts, stickers, etc. Visitors to the School The safety of all the children attending our school is vital. All parents and visitors entering the building must use the front doors, sign in at the office and obtain a badge identifying them as a Visitor. We ask that you be patient when entering the building. CRIMINAL OFFENCE DECLARATIONS All volunteers who help at St. Vincent de Paul School must have a Criminal Reference Check. If you plan to continue to help at our school on a regular basis or will be looking to volunteer next year, why not pick up a Criminal Reference Check Application in the office. There is no charge for the process and by completing the form there will not be any delay in being part of early school year activities. SCHOOL AGENDAS Once again this year, teachers will be distributing agendas to the students in grades 1-8 that is used to develop their organization skills as well as facilitate communication regarding homework, deadlines and special events,. Starting on page 2 of the agenda is a guide to the rules and responsibilities from the principal and from the school board “The Catholic Code of Conduct”. Please take some time to look over the agenda with your child. It is particularly important to emphasize that the agenda is to be used daily to assist your child in organizing his/her time and to keep parents informed on what is happening in class and in the school. It is a great vehicle to jot down a short note to the teacher and the teacher can respond in the same way. SABRINA’S LAW Sabrina’s Law is an Act to protect anaphylactic pupils in publicly funded schools in Ontario. Named “Sabrina’s Law” in honour of an Ontario student who died following an anaphylactic reaction in 2003, the law became effective on January 1, 2006. This law requires that every school board establish and maintain an anaphylaxis policy. It also requires that principal’s develop individual plans for pupils at risk of anaphylaxis. ALLERGEN AWARE SCHOOL School can be a very frightening environment for a child with a severe allergy to peanuts or nut products. In an effort to further promote a safe and secure environment for all of our children the school has been declared allergen aware. We ask your support in implementing this program by not sending food items which may contain peanuts and/or nuts. Approximately 2% of our school population suffers from this life-threatening allergy. At first glance this may appear a small percentage. However, we must take into consideration that these children are not isolated to any particular grade level and, like all students, utilize the computer lab, washrooms, library and physical education equipment. We ask that you place careful consideration to school lunches and snacks and refrain from sending in items that are made of, or contain, nuts or peanuts. We offer our heartfelt thanks for your support. Students who inadvertently bring nut or peanut products to school will eat these lunch items in a safe area outside of their classroom. They may return to the class when they have finished eating and have washed their hands. STORAGE AND ADMINISTRATION OF MEDICATON Parents are responsible for ensuring that all medication and forms are updated annually for any student who requires medication to be administered at school. If your child requires medication please have the necessary forms completed and return them, along with any medication, to the office as soon as possible. Forms are available at the school office. STUDENT INSURANCE As required by the Education Act and the Ministry of Education, the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board annually provides parents with information about costeffective student accident insurance coverage via student carrier. ‘insuremykids Protection Plan’ forms were distributed to students the first week of school. Effective September 2012 the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board requires parents, guardians written acknowledgement that they have received information regarding Student Insurance especially for those students participating in out-of-school excursions and/or extra-curricular sports activities and is indicated on the respective parent permission forms (ref: GF115 Elements of Risk) distributed when students participated in educational excursions. Although enrolment in the student insurance is voluntary, the board encourages parents to take advantage of the inexpensive insurance coverage, especially if their child/children participate in sports, excursions/field trips, or, if parents do not have dental insurance coverage. Two options are offered for enrolment: 1) Complete the traditional form and mail it in or 2) Photocopy the form and fax it to Reliable Life at 1-905-522-7211 or 1-800-463-KIDS (5437). Parents alone have the right to insure their children. SCHOOL SECURE ENTRY SYSTEM We ask for your patience and understanding if there is a wait at the doors. Often our school secretary is away from her desk for photocopying and the like. Upon entry to the school building please report immediately to the main office. Only approved visitors will be granted permission to access other areas of the school. Parent(s) wishing to meet with staff are asked to remain at the office until they can be met by the respective staff member. Thank you for your vigilance to assist us to provide a safe environment for both the students and staff.
