Please forgive us for any times that we may have Offended You by not using our talents and gifts to serve You (and ourselves) best. Watch over us as we begin to enjoy our summer vacation. Keep us safe and free from harm. We ask this of You, Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour. AMEN. June is the Virtue of Fairness. “God wants us to treat each other as we would like to be treated.” A fair person… Listens to both sides of the story Is a good team player Knows that the same rules apply to everyone Works to bring about peaceful solutions Grade 8 Graduation Dates Plans are well underway for our Grade 8 Graduation. CONSISTENT ATTENDANCE We remind parents of the importance of consistent attendance in your child’s success. Share Life A huge thank you to the entire St. Vincent de Paul community for donating $500.00 to Share Life through donations from our Toonie 2 Ball. As special thanks to Mr. Trias for coordinating this effort. HANLAN WATER PROJECT Farewell to staff members It is with great sadness that we announce that several teachers will be leaving the St. Vincent de Paul School community. We extend best wishes to Mr. Carlos Trias who will be leaving St. Vincent de Paul at the end of the school year. A very special good bye to Mrs. Diane Harmon who has decided to retire after thirty years in education. We also will welcome back Ms. Heather Anderson who will be returning St. Vincent de Paul. On personal note, I would like to announce that after five years, I will be leaving St. Vincent de Paul to assume Principal responsibilities at another school in Dufferin-Peel. It has been an honour serving the students at this school. They have made every day a joyous one and I thank all the parents and teachers that have helped create an environment condusive to learning. I will sincerely miss everyone. SUMMER WEATHER CLOTHING The warmer days are hopefully just around the corner and with them come the summer fashions. We ask your assistance and cooperation in helping us to uphold standards of neatness, modesty and good taste regarding appropriate clothing during hot weather. What is acceptable on a six year old may not be considered appropriate on a twelve year old. Thus, students from grades 5 to 8 should avoid purely recreational wear such as short-shorts, cutoffs, tank tops, halter tops, or any clothing which leaves the wearer with a bare back or bare midriff. The office will provide a large t-shirt for those students who are dressed inappropriately. Thank you for your co-operation in this matter. This is a notice that the Region of Peel is undertaking the Hanlan Water Project. St. Vincent de Paul Community members will receive information from the Region of Peel highlighting the extensive construction of underground piping that will take place in the Cawthra Road and Burnhamthorpe area. For more information, contact the Region of Peel: Public Works at 905-791-7800. A representative from Region of Peel will be at our School Council Meeting on June 5 at 6:30 p.m. Class Organizations for 2013-2014 At St. Vincent de Paul we maximize the groupings of students to ensure we create the best possible educational environment for all of our students. The process involves grade level teachers meeting with the principal and special education team to generate the proposed, tentative lists according to the following criteria: 1. Consider parental input outlining educational reasons for the placement of their children where possible (must be received in writing by the Principal. Letters must be sent to the office, not the classroom teacher. 2. Avoid having siblings, cousins, relatives or twins in the same class where possible. 3. Student levels are considered to ensure clear balance of level 1-2-3-4 students in each class. 4. Students with special education or special needs are considered in the groupings. 5. Students who are English Language Learners are considered for the distribution. 6. Students with behavioural needs. 7. Students who facilitate the learning of others. 8. Students who inhibit the learning of others. 9. Number of male and female students. All class placements are confidential until the first day of school on September 3, 2013. Closing Mass Our year-end Mass is scheduled for Monday, June 17, 2013 at 10:15 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Church . To increase or relationship and communication with our home parish, we feel it is important for this year’s Closing Mass to be held at the Church. We will use a bus to shuttle students from JK/SK- Grade 3. In the spirit of health and wellness, our grades 4 – 8 students and supervisors will walk. All parents/guardians are invited to join us for this celebration either on the bus or by walking with your children Catholic Education Centre Schools Program: Westlake Campus Once again, we are delighted that we will continue hosting the Catholic Education Centre Program: Westlake Campus at St. Vincent de Paul School for the 2013-2014 School Year. This is a Ministry of Education funded program that provides an alternative learning opportunity for students who require specialized support. The focus is on literacy, numeracy and overall student achievement and well being. This program responds to the educational needs of young people for whom the regular pattern of school and/or family life is interrupted for a variety of reasons. The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board continues to offer support for these programs in collaboration with community agencies and the Ministry of Education. We look forward to another successful year welcoming our CEC School Program students, as well as their parents/guardians. As part of the Board and School Pillar of Inclusivity and Catholicity, we will welcome the Westlake students to attend our School BBQ to be held June 6 from 11a.m. to 12 noon in our school playground. We are best able to serve and protect students when we are made aware of legal custody arrangements, visitation rights and other special instructions. If legal custody matters affect your family, please ensure that our office and classroom teachers are aware of any custodial arrangements that may affect your child during school hours. It is imperative that you provide any legal paperwork to the office so it can be kept on file. NO DOGS IN THE SCHOOL YARD!!!! It is important for the safety of all our students that no dogs be brought into the school yard before, during and after school hours. Even the gentlest dogs can get over excited with so many distractions and children. Please keep your pet safe at home for their safety and that of the students. A PROGRAM LIKE NO OTHER!!!! Suppose I told you there was a wellresearched and statistically proven program that on average could: • increase the average life expectancy of children by eight years • significantly reduce children’s use and risk from alcohol, tobacco and drugs • dramatically lower their risk of suicide • help children rebound from depression 70 per cent faster • dramatically reduce children’s risk for committing a crime • improve children’s attitude at school and increase their school participation • reduce the risk for rebelliousness in children • improve children’s odds for a “very happy” life • provide children with a life-long moral compass • provide children with a caring extended family church life in their adult years Is there such a program? Yes, there is. The program is called “Active Church Participation.” In study after study, children who actively engage in a faith community on a regular basis significantly benefit from reduced likelihood of life problems and risky behaviours. It significantly improves their odds of a happier, healthier, and longer life. These studies show the same life benefits and results for adults, as well. In addition, numerous surveys continue to show a strong statistical connection between being active in the church as a child and staying active as an adult. Furthermore, recent research indicates that even “being involved at least a few times a month is correlated with nearly the same sticking power as weekly How much would a program like this be worth? What if I told you it was free, and took less than a couple of hours a week? Would you be interested? School Textbooks. At this time of the year, please take a look around your home for school textbooks and library books. School textbooks and library books are school property and are loaned to the students annually. The expectation is that textbooks will be returned at the end of the school year. Students are responsible for these textbooks and will be asked to pay if these books go missing or have been vandalized. IMPORTANT DATES!!!
