As we come to the end of another school year,

May we now relax from our studies a little,

We pause to thank You, Dear Lord,

For all of Your guidance and support in our work

CONSISTENT ATTENDANCE

We remind parents of the importance of consistent attendance in your child’s success. If attendance or punctuality have been a significant concern with regards to your child, you may receive or have received a phone call or letter from your child’s teacher. We respectfully urge you to take these letters seriously and help your child to develop more positive habits for success in the future.

Class Organizations for 2012-2013

At St. Vincent de Paul we maximize the groupings of students to ensure we create the best possible educational environment for all of our students. The process involves grade level teachers meeting with the principal and special education team to generate the proposed, tentative lists according to the following criteria:

1. Consider parental input outlining educational reasons for the placement of their children where possible (must be received in writing by the Principal. Letters must be sent to the office, not the classroom teacher.

2. Avoid having siblings, cousins, relatives or twins in the same class where possible.

3. Student levels are considered to ensure clear balance of level 1-2-3-4 students in each class.

4. Students with special education or special needs are considered in the groupings.

5. Students who are English Language Learners are considered for the distribution.

6. Students with behavioural needs.

7. Students who facilitate the learning of others.

8. Students who inhibit the learning of others.

9. Number of male and female students.

All class placements are confidential until the first day of school on September 4, 2012.

Catholic Education Centre Schools

Program: Westlake

Campus

Once again, we are delighted that we will continue hosting the

Catholic Education Centre

Program: Westlake Campus at St. Vincent de Paul School for the 2012-2013 School

Year. This is a Ministry of Education funded program that provides an alternative learning opportunity for students who require specialized support. The focus is on literacy, numeracy and overall student achievement and well being. This program responds to the educational needs of young people for whom the regular pattern of school and/or family life is interrupted for a variety of reasons. The Dufferin-Peel

Catholic District School Board continues to offer support for these programs in collaboration with community agencies and the Ministry of Education. We look forward to another successful

year welcoming our

CEC School Program students, as well as their parents/guardians.

A PROGRAM LIKE NO OTHER!!!!

Suppose I told you there was a wellresearched and statistically proven program that on average could:

• increase the average life expectancy of children by eight years

• significantly reduce children’s use and risk from alcohol, tobacco and drugs

• dramatically lower their risk of suicide

• help children rebound from depression 70 per cent faster

• dramatically reduce children’s risk for committing a crime

• improve children’s attitude at school and increase their school participation

• reduce the risk for rebelliousness in children

• improve children’s odds for a “very happy” life

• provide children with a life-long moral compass

• provide children with a caring extended family church life in their adult years

Is there such a program? Yes, there is. The program is called “ Active Church Participation .” In study after study, children who actively engage in a faith community on a regular basis significantly benefit from reduced likelihood of life problems and risky behaviours. It significantly improves their odds of a happier, healthier, and longer life. These studies show the same life benefits and results for adults, as well.

In addition, numerous surveys continue to show a strong statistical connection between being active in the church as a child and staying active as an adult.

Furthermore, recent research indicates that even “being involved at least a few times a month is correlated with nearly the same sticking power as weekly

How much would a program like this be worth? What if

I told you it was free, and took less than a couple of hours a week? Would you be interested?

School Textbooks.

At this time of the year, please take a look around your home for school textbooks and library books. School textbooks and library books are school property and are loaned to the students annually. The expectation is that textbooks will be returned at the end of the school year. Students are responsible for these textbooks and will be asked to pay if these books go missing or have been vandalized.

SUMMER WEATHER CLOTHING

The warmer days are hopefully just around the corner and with them come the summer fashions. We ask your assistance and co-operation in helping us to uphold standards of neatness, modesty and good taste regarding appropriate clothing during hot weather.

What is acceptable on a six year old may not be considered appropriate on a twelve year old. Thus, students from grades 5 to 8 should avoid purely recreational wear such as short-shorts, cutoffs, tank tops, halter tops, or any clothing which leaves the wearer with a bare back or bare midriff. The office will provide a large t-shirt for those students who are dressed inappropriately. Thank you for your co-operation in this matter .

Health and Safety: Nut Free School

Due to the stringent anaphylaxis policies based on Sabrina’s law, students, staff members or parents are asked not to bring food containing nuts to school. School Board policy now prohibit any food or beverages from being present and or consumed outside in the school yard or on a bus.

Students will be permitted to eat their snacks in the classroom, 10 minutes prior to recess. If you wish to celebrate your child’s birthday at school, do not send any food. Instead you can send pencils or stickers, or other non-edible items to share with their friends.

School Yard Supervision

The schoolyard is supervised beginning at 8:45 a.m.

Students should plan their arrival time to coincide with this supervision ans should not arrive before this time.

For reasons of safety, students should go directly home after school dismissal.

Protect ing Your Children “ On Line.”

Some helpful hints to keep your child safe…

 Set clear technology rules with your children

 Be clear with your children on appropriate internet

 surfing behavior

 Take an active role in protecting your children’s privacy whenever they are asked to submit personal information

Know the sites that your children visit

If other children visit your home and use the

 computer, make sure they follow your rules

Teach your children to be “Net-Smart” just like you teacher them to be “Street-Smart.”

Closing Mass

Our year-end Mass is scheduled for Tuesday, June 18,

2011 at 10:15 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Church .

To increase or relationship and communication with our home parish, we feel it is important for this year’s Closing Mass to be held at the Church. We will use a bus to shuttle students from JK/SK- Grade 3. In the spirit of health and wellness, our grades 4 – 8 students and supervisors will walk. All parents/guardians are invited to join us for this celebration either on the bus or by walking with your children.

Lost and Found Items

Students and parents are invited to check the Lost and

Found for items your child may have lost throughout the year. Any items left at the end of June will be donated to the St. Vincent de Paul Society.

Report Cards

Your child’s report card will be sent home on Tuesday June 26, 2012 . Please return pg. 3 to your child’s teacher before

June 30 th .

Are you Planning to Move?

We are in the process of planning staffing and organizing classes for the

2012-2013 school year. If you are planning on moving out of St. Vincent de Paul School area, please call the office to make arrangements for a student transfer form to be prepared and sent home. The transfer form will serve as an introduction to your new school and will enable the school to request student transfer requisition.

NO DOGS IN THE SCHOOL YARD!!!!!

It is important for the safety of all our students that no dogs be brought into the school yard before, during and after school hours. Even the gentlest dogs can get over excited with so many distractions and children. Please keep your pet safe at home for their safety and that of the students.

CRIMINAL OFFENCE DECLARATIONS

All volunteers who help at St. Vincent de

Paul must have a Criminal Reference

Check . If you plan to continue to help at our school on a regular basis or will be looking to volunteer next year, why not pick up a Criminal Reference Check

Application in the office.

Combined Classes

As the population of St. Vincent de Paul declines, combined grades continue to be a necessary reality at our school. This is a reality in many schools in the

Mississauga East Family. As teacher prepare class lists they consider many factors, such as learning styles of students, a balance of abilities, and class culture. Being in a combined grade is in no way prejudicial to a child’s education. Within Ontario all schools are bound by a strict teacher pupil ratio. This will be particularly evident as we strive to meet the hard cap of 20:1 in the primary grades and the guidelines of 25:1 in grades four to eight. Until we finalize our enrolment in September, all class arrangements and teacher placements will be tentative.
