Virtue of the Month: Respect
We all deserve to be treated respectfully by others. However, in order to be respected we
also have to respect ourselves. Everyone has a right to go to school/work
free of gossip, name-calling, and put-downs. We should expect to be treated with respect by everyone we meet – our brothers and sisters in Jesus.

February is “Black History Month”. As part of
our focus this month on the Catholic virtue of RESPECT, we recognize, highlight, and celebrate the
gifts that our rich cultural and racial diversity enable us to experience and enjoy.
Library News
The Forest of Reading Literacy Initiative 2015 is
well underway at St. Jean-Marie Vianney Library.
All book selections are written by Canadian authors. Students in the primary grades have the Blue
Spruce books read to them during their library time.
They subsequently engage in reading response activities related to the book. After ten books are read
to the students, they are eligible to vote for their
favourite book in April 2015. These votes will be
tallied and sent to the Ontario Library Association
so that one Canadian author can be presented with
the Forest of Reading Award.
As for the Silver
Birch Express Club, students in Grades 3 and 4 are
reading their fiction and non-fiction book selections
in order to cast a vote for their favourite book and
author in May 2015. Students are reminded to continue to ex-change books in a timely manner so that
they can be read by all members of our Forest of
Reading club. Students who read five books and
successfully participated in the book discussions
and activity, are eligible to vote for their favourite
book in late May 2015. All successful members
will receive a certificate from the Ontario Library
Association. Keep up the great enthusiasm and happy reading! For more information about the Forest
of Reading please visit https://www.accessola.org
Student Accident Insurance The Dufferin-Peel
Catholic District School Board annually provides parents with information regarding cost-effective student
accident insurance coverage. Although enrolment is voluntary, the Board encourages parents to take advantage
of this inexpensive insurance coverage, especially if
your child(ren) participate in sports, excursions/field
trips, other extra-curricular activities and/or if parents do not have dental insurance coverage. Fur ther
information regarding this insurance can be obtained by
contacting Reliable Life Insurance at 1-800-463-KIDS
Book Fair
The Scholastic Book Fair was a huge success again this
year. Your support of this vital literary event is a key
part of helping us obtain new books and resources for
our library. This year, we raised almost $3,000 for our
school library!! THANK YOU!!!
Along with a student from every class winning a free
book with their Golden Ticket, many students filled out
the Family Event Draw ballot. This winning ballot,
which was announced on Monday, February 9th, allowed a win of $50 in books – $25 for the student
PLUS $25 for the classroom teacher!
Thank you to all families who participated by purchasing the latest and greatest in children’s books.
The students in grade 4 had a fantastic time at
Highlands Nordic Ski Centre on January 30. They
travelled north through the winter landscape for a
day of learning and fun. Our time was divided in
two with part of the day being devoted to a study
of Rocks and Minerals. Students explored several
different learning centers where they learned about
the rock cycle, examined samples and had to identify minerals and classify various rocks. The other
part of the day was spent out on the ski trails. They
learned how to fall and how to get up again! Then
they moved on to play tag on skis and learn how to
climb hills and come down them again. This was a
challenge but we were all up for it. All who participated had a great time and several are destined for
the Nordic Ski event at the next Olympics!

Mr. Zoretich

hour. Presently there is approximately 50 students
who are participating. Due to the popularity of this
club we offer it every lunch hour.
Athletics at Vianney
Elementary school children need to be
physically active every day. From kindergarten to
beyond, children need quality activity programs to
develop skills that will support them for a healthy
lifestyle and social well-being. Given that children
spend most of their waking hours in school, our
education system has perhaps the best opportunity
to work on developing each child’s physical literacy. Many children who attend school may not have
opportunities to join sport and physical activity
programs outside of school. Through quality physical education programming, elementary schools
can address this basic need for regular daily activity. Regular participation in physical activity allows
students to develop a pattern of life-enhancing and
self-rewarding experiences that contribute to their
potential to be healthy contributing members of
society.
SJMV school provides opportunities for students to
participate in organized sports team such as soccer,
volleyball, softball and basketball and individual
sports such as cross country and track and field.
Additionally, Vianney offers intramural games/
sports to our students as another means of promoting sport, physical activity, cooperation and team
building. We also participate in special tournaments in various sports organized by other sport
agencies, recreation centers, secondary invitationals
and our co-terminus board.
Spirit of Harriet Tubman
On January 8, students in grades 4-8 watched a theatrical performance from Leslie Mccurdy. She portrayed the spirit of Harriet Tubman; a famous Underground Railroad conductor. The performance
was enjoyed by all.

The Vianney "Artastic" Drawing Club
Students in grade 5 and 6 have been meeting biweekly since January 8 developing skills in drawing as well as building community. Lessons consisted of pointillism, line development, light and
shadow techniques and culminating in portrait
drawing. We would like to thank Mrs. R. Sayah for
volunteering her time, expertise and dedication to
our students. Please check out their "Artastic"
work on display by the Library.

Great Canadian Mail Race
In the month of January, Mrs. Mezzatesta's class
participated in the Great Canadian Mail
Race. They received a package from a class in
Waterdown, Ontario whom received their package
from a class in Saskatchewan. The premise is that
the class receives a package containing one class
letter and one student letter from a random classroom across Ontario. Once the package is received
one student is to respond back the sending class
then they are to find a new class for each student to
send a package too! The student to receive their
response letter first wins. Our letters have been
sent so we are anxiously waiting for our responses. So EXCITING! Let the Race BEGIN!
Grade 3 & 6 EQAO Assessments
Grade 3 and 6 students will work on EQAO
Assessments in reading, writing and
mathematics from May 25 – June 5, 2015
When scheduling appointments, please keep

Eco-Team News: Introducing Waste
-Free Wednesdays!
Starting Wednesday February 4th, St. Jean-Marie Vianney Eco-Team is encouraging all staff and students
to bring Waste-Free lunches!
What does this mean? Please bring all snacks, lunches and drinks in re-useable containers. Avoid disposable plastic wrap, tin foil and other packaging that
cannot be re-used or recycled.
Why is this important? We want to reduce garbage
that needs to be taken to the landfill and do our part
to help the environment.
When? Every Wednesday for the rest of the school
year, starting Wed. February 4th.
National Sweater Day: Thursday February
5th, 2015
What was National Sweater Day? Everyone was to
wear a sweater to school.
Why? The temperature at school was turned down
by 2 degrees. We felt a slight difference in room
temperature, but it was comfortable with a sweater
on.
Why is this important to do? We are trying to save
energy by lowering the temperature and we are to
raising awareness for the World Wildlife Federation.
