PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
As we prepare to enter into the wondrous, miraculous Advent journey, we are reminded
that we are all called to patience, perseverance and prayer at many times in our lives.
This is a time when we find ourselves turning to the comfort and security of familiar routines, places and people. For many, this is a time of personal, spiritual renewal for we
understand that the Christmas message is truly about God’s great love for us.

At our school, we welcome Advent in prayer and in song. We teach our students about
our faith traditions; we share our familiar Christmas story of new life, of a most special
child born in a most ordinary manner … the Child of God, born a refugee, who was extraordinarily both God and human … the Word made flesh. We invite you to join us in
becoming Advent people … embrace this time in our faith as an invitation to reconnect
with your Christmas story.

Harriet Tubman
On Friday, November the 28th, the
Junior Achievement Program visited
Ms. Yates grade 8 classroom and worked with students on
how to be financially responsible with money. Students were
taught how to make reasonable investments and how to
manage finances.
There will be an artist in the school performance on January
8 at 9:20 a.m. for Grades 4-8 students. Leslie McCurdy will
be here to tell us a story Harriet Tubman.
St.Roch students involved in the leadership Program have
planned, developed, and taught our intermediate students a
basketball unit. We will continue to partner with the St.Roch
students involved in the leadership program throughout the
year.
There are many plays about Harriet Tubman, but none
share her entire life story like a visit with The Spirit of Harriet Tubman. Leslie McCurdy invokes the 'spirit' of Harriet
Tubman as she portrays the life of the famous Underground
Railroad conductor, recreating stories familiar and some
rarely told, using words said to have been Harriet Tubman's
own. Through it all we learn of the faith and conviction that
drove Harriet Tubman to follow her dreams; the spirit of the
past connecting with the present, inspiring her charges to
have the courage to do the same in envisioning their future.
Intermediate Boys Volleyball
French Games Club
The coaches would like to congratulate the Intermediate
Boys Volleyball team on a great season. The boys played well
in several exhibition games and showed great skill and determination in winning their regional mini-tournament. The
team qualified for the Family Tournament and played very
well considering the absence of a starting setter and a key
injury to a veteran grade 8 player in the first game of the
tournament. The team competed at a very high level and lost
in the semis to the eventual family champion. We wish our
grade 8 players success at the high school level and are eager
to work with our returning grade 7 players next year.
It is with pleasure that I bring to you a new and exciting club
at St. Jean- Marie Vianney school for students in grades 4-6:
French Games Club! The purpose of this club is to allow
students to have fun with the French language while playing
educational games that will review key terms, expressions
and vocabulary in the target language. Some games that will
be played include twister, guess who, bingo and dominoes
all while speaking in French. This club will be held every
Wednesday during the lunch hour and will run for about 40
minutes. Merci beaucoup, Mme. Fawaz
St. Roch Leadership Class Visits SJMV
The coaches would like to congratulate the team members:
Elijah, Alessio, Joseph F., Tobby, Joshua I., Daniel J., Joseph L.,
Kurt, Joshua M., Jonathan, Jeremy, Matthew, Andre and our
Manager, Andrew.
Coaches, Bortolotto, MacEachern and Quintana.
Primary Intramurals
Our grades 1 to 3 will again be able to participate in cooperative games over the lunch hour starting in mid January. Permission forms will be sent home after the Christmas Break.
Chess Club
Our chess club will also begin in February. We had a great
turn out last year and we sent 3 teams to the Brampton
West Family tournament. Forms will be sent home in the
new year.
Intermediate Girls Volleyball Champions
Congratulations to the Intermediate Girls Volleyball
team. After dominating in their mini tournament, they met
some tough competition in the Brampton West Family tournament. The girls battled hard with the single goal of obtaining Vianney's first banner and were able to accomplish
just that. The girls will advance to the board tournament
representing Brampton West as one of 8 schools in the
board. Congratulations and good luck to Kaysen, Alexis,
Sarah, Melina, Eliza, Renee, Crystelle, Samantha and Keiera.

The Rosary Apostolate in the Schools Program
We are delighted to have the Rosary Apostolate program at
SJMV School. Facilitators visit every classroom in the school
on a monthly basis, from October to April. The program exists because teachers continue to experience the good fruits
of praying the rosary in the hearts of students! All lessons
have been examined and approved by the Archdiocese of
Toronto and other participating Diocese. All presentations
and prayers are
modified according
to the different age
groups.
MOVEMBER
Vianney participated in our second
annual Movember
campaign during
the month of November. Male staff
members sported
creative and itchy
mustaches for the
entire month to
promote men’s
health. By growing
a new mustache during the month, men become walking
billboards, ready to engage in conversation with others surrounding a topic that is often ignored. Through our school
community, we were able to raise awareness and funds to
support the work of the Movember Foundation. Thank you
to all the staff and school community who raised awareness
and donated during this month! Now where’s my razor!
Vianney Dance Team 2014
The dance team coaches would like to thank all
the students who tried out for this year's dance
team. Our school is full of talent! Congratulations to the
following students who made the team. Alessia B, Bianca P,
Samantha V, Naomi B, Chante S, Colleen F, Melina F, Nyah P,
Sarah A, Ashanti C, Daveen T, Roland O, Richard O,
and Galand O. We are looking forward to a fun and exciting
dance season!
Ripley’s Aquarium FDK Trip
Our FDK students were very excited to
visit the Ripley's Aquarium. The students
were fascinated by all the different fish swimming around
them, and this sparked many interesting questions which we
will continue to investigate in our classrooms, in the coming
weeks.
Program Initiatives
The new social studies document has come into full implementation for this school year. Teachers at St. JeanMarie Vianney are embracing inquiry based learning in
their classrooms. Beginning with co-planning opportunities with our SAT, grade partners explored the new document and mapped out a plan of action beginning with
the development of their essential questions. Teachers
have embraced opportunities to explore inquiry learning
and to teach responsively, have had many “wonderings”
and taken every PD opportunity provided to improve
their practices. Teachers share their learning and ponder questions with each other through time provided in
staff and divisional meetings. Active wonder walls can
be found in many classes, the inquiry process has been
taught, analyzed and success criteria developed and
now teachers are involved in full inquiries based upon
the wide spectrum of inquiry teaching methods. Our
grade 6/7 class is fully immersed in the formulating
good questions stage of inquiry, utilizing larger than life
sized Q-Charts. Our grade 1/2 teacher has partnered
with our teacher-librarian to lead an inquiry into community helpers and their roles and responsibilities. Our
grade 8 class uses knowledge building circles and interviews as assessment practices. Our grade 5 class just
completed inquiries on the human body systems. And of
course, all of our FDK classes continue to discover how
their inquiries connect to being reflective and creative
thinkers. As we progress through the year we are excited at the opportunity to continue creating conditions for
learning where both our students and teachers are actively engaged learners.
Crochet Club
St. Jean-Marie Vianney School is pleased to present its
newly formed “Crochet Club”. Over thirty students
joined the club with great enthusiasm to learn this timeless craft and skill. The students have been working hard
on their basic stitch to create winter scarves just in time
for Christmas. Some students in the spirit of the Advent
season, donated their creations to the Vianney Clothing
Drive. Come join the crochet club in January 2015, as we
begin new crochet patterns!
