Psalm 104:30 Lent consists of two parts: the first being the forty days between Ash Wednesday and Passion Sunday (Palm Sunday). The second part of Lent is the time of Passiontide or Holy week. This year the Liturgical Season of Lent begins on Wednesday, February 22, 2012 - Ash Wednesday. What does the word “Lent” mean? Why have we given this name to the time of preparation before Easter? Lent comes from an old word meaning “springtime.” During the spring of the year, daylight increases, trees begin to bud and flowers start to appear. The new life that comes to the world each spring is like the renewal of life that comes when we pray and try harder to follow Jesus. The ashes on Ash Wednesday serve two purposes: 1. They symbolize, and remind us, that something must die in order to bring about new life. 2. They are a symbol of sorrow and repentance for sins committed. Historically ashes were placed on peoples’ foreheads as a sign of repentance. ASH WEDNESDAY On Wednesday, February 22, 2012, all students from JK to grade 8 will participate in an Ash Wednesday liturgy at 11:00 a.m... Students will receive ashes, reflect on readings and pray together as a faith community in preparation for Lent and the Easter season. The formal celebration of St. Timothy’s 50th Anniversary will take place the evening of May 9, 2012. SAVE THE DATE!! Head lice are parasites which have been common among human beings for centuries. They are not connected in any way with dirt, neglect, and so on. Anyone can be infested with them. Unfortunately, in recent years, they have become quite common throughout North America. In order to control these pests, we shall do the following and request your full cooperation. If even one case is found in the school, we shall inform all parents of children in that class. We will be monitoring friends and classmates, however, we would ask that you also check your own children and if you find them to be infested, we ask you to let us know so that we can help you get the proper treatment and take the necessary precautionary measures. Even if cases are not reported from the school, it is a wise precaution to check your children periodically. If your children are infested, we will be asking you to keep them out of school until after they have been treated with the correct shampoo. If we all cooperate with these procedures, we may not entirely escape outbreaks, but we will be able to bring them under control quickly. SAFETY REMINDERS The narrow one-way driveway for vehicles exiting at the back of the school is not to be used for pedestrian use. There is only enough clearance for vehicles and, despite the presence of signs FEBRUARY posted at both ends of the driveway, there3are a number of individuals who walk through the driveway resulting in extremely unsafe NO SCHOOL FOR conditions STUDEN for everyone involved. Please do not stop or park in the fire lane and bus lane at the side of the school. If you need to park, please use the parking lot, or, park on the road. Please use the kiss and ride lanes at the FRONT of the school when picking up or dropping off a student. PARKING LOT SAFETY AND KISS AND RIDE Our school driveway is a matter of great concern in regards A. students. DAYS Please use the Kiss ‘n’ Ride to the safety P. of our lane at the front of the school to drop off or pick up your child. You cannot park your vehicle in the Kiss ‘n’ Ride lane before school or at dismissal time. For the safety of all of our children, CARS ARE ALSO NOT PERMITTED TO PARK, DROP OFF or PICK UP students in the driveway or bus lane located at the side of the school. WINTER WEATHER During the winter season, many parents are concerned about school policy on outdoor recess. It is generally accepted that when the wind chill factor drops below -25°C, students should not go outside for recess. Dufferin-Peel C.D.S.B. Policy uses a wind chill factor of -20° C as a determining factor for modified recess. We ask that students come dressed appropriately with hats, gloves, mittens etc. Where possible, please put identification on our child’s belongings. Please note that all students should have indoor shoes during the winter months so that the classrooms are kept as clean and dry as possible. Thank you in advance for your support and cooperation. SNOW AND ICE Snow is part of our winter life in Canada, providing both frustration and enjoyment. We all like to play in it; however, snow and ice can be very dangerous. In fact, most injuries happen during wintertime. For safety reasons, our school rule must be that snow stays on the ground – no snowball throwing, kicking snow or any other activity with snow or ice that could be harmful, which includes sliding on slopes. Thank you for taking time to reinforce these safety rules with your children. DATES TO REMEMBER FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 3 P.A.
