University of Houston Charter School: Innovator Rationales
Morning Meeting: Through consistent class meetings students are given the autonomy to become selfdisciplined, responsible individuals. We use this time for reflective conversations and preparation for the
day. This week we will continue to learn class routines and schedules.
ELA (English Language Arts This week, your child will develop their understanding of graphic features
within text and how we can use them to increase our comprehension of text. We will discover the best
ways to use the table of contents, glossary, in text graphics and bold words. Through the explicit
teaching of in-text features, they will become more aware of the additional information provided within
the text and how we can efficiently find answers to questions we may ask while reading.
Handwriting: This week, your child will continue to make their way through the cursive alphabet and
will expand their practice to encompass all letters. Daily practice will allow them to become more
comfortable with cursive and later be able to apply it to their daily writing.
Math: Students will be introduced to different types of graphs: pictographs, bar, dots and how to solve
problems with bar graphs. Students will review math STAAR strategies for preparation for the STAAR
test.
Science: Students will review STAAR strategies for preparation for the STAAR test.
Social Studies: Students will review STAAR strategies for preparation for the STAAR test.
How to Help Your Child: How to Help Your Child: Encourage your child to complete their homework. Ask
them about specific terms they encountered throughout the day. Ask them to explain the meaning of
these terms and how it applies to what they have learned. Read aloud to your child, as they sit with you.
Allow them to follow along and observe habits of experienced readers. Practice inference with your
child. For instance, provide short, social stories and leave out key details and have them practice
determining what it is you are referring to. For example, this morning I went to the fridge to grab some
milk. However, when I opened the door, all twelve of them fell out of their carton and splattered on the
floor. It was such a sticky mess. What did I drop on the floor? Stories like this can be developed on at a
moment’s notice and truly help support the skills your child will be developing in class. Thank you for all
that you do!
