We also have our challenge word that we try to solve as well as have a few students write the morning message for the class to read. Our Read Aloud for the remainder of the year will primarily focus on a topics connected to student interest. They will also be chosen from the students library books. We will also brush up on our research skills using primary and secondary sources to gather information about these topics. We will look at the topic of “Being Smart”. What does it mean? How do we become smart? Who is smart? In Literacy Workshop students will continue with their sight word stations as usual. Our words will focus on the long /O/ sound and OA, OE and OW pattern. Students will also practice spelling their sight words and eventually we will have an informal spelling test. During writer’s workshop students will have free writing opportunity. We will look at helping them write capitals, lowercase letters, periods and using sight word resources to help them write. Students have also been working on reading their pieces and making changes. Spelling Words: Students will discuss the new long o patterns and then be asked to think of words that have the oa/oe/ow pattern. (E.g. show, toe, boat etc.) We will then use these words for spelling buddies. Chapter Book: Horrible Harry in Room 2B Social Studies students have created names for their “Mercado” groups and designed simple advertisements as well. We have talked about what Cinco de Mayo is and why they celebrate. Students are now taking time to talk about Mexican culture or ways of life. Emails will be going out to you as our study goes on. Thank you for your support, participation and future purchases. In Science we have discussed the information in our plant unit. We will now use our science skills of observing, comparing, measuring and questioning to help us understanding the life cycles of plants and butterflies. Students will be asked to draw and write and discuss their ideas. In Math Workshop, All students will continue playing math games to support their development in number sense and math skills. We will be practicing addition and subtraction word problems within 20 for some and greater than 20 for others. Students have to write the story, draw the story and write the number sentence. We also will be continuing our Personal Finance study. Students will talk about using money for needs and wants. How to help your child at home: Keep up the good work with your students at home. They all should have a book that is a level higher. They should be looking at pictures, tracking words, sounding out in chunks, looking for little words within big words and reading the sight words with no problem. Field day will be April 28th. Navigator Mercado will be during Cinco de Mayo.
