Do not wear cotton or polyester/cotton fabrics next to your skin. Cotton absorbs moisture and therefore will get cold lying against your skin. This will lead to rapid loss of heat which could cause hypothermia in very cold weather. A good investment is a fleece vest as it will keep the heart and body warm which results in warmer blood being sent out to the body’s extremities. Fleece is very good as it ‘wicks’ moisture awa from your skin quickly. Down jackets are great insulators if they do not get wet. But WOOL is the best by far! It traps warm, dry air next to your skin keeping air from moving across your body. . . . Always dress in layers. Several thin layers are warmer than one heavy layer. You can always remove or add on layers as you need and therefore you can better regulate your core body temperature. You can lose a lot of both heat through your head so it is important to sear a hat and one that can cover your ears if needed. \k earing a scaif also si1l varm the air before \ou brcathe it in Vscarin mittens (instead of ,loves and math ek ssool or pokprop lene socks sii’ protect sour bards and feet fiom the old. Eco Page Update St. Raymond Recycling Batteries Initiative f H1’RIL \ Ontario’s Winter Walk Day th Thursday, February 9 is Ontario’s Winter Walk Day for schools. Parents are encouraged to par ticipate by challenging their children walk to school on this day. Remember St. Raymond is part of the Walking Routes initiative. Running shoe symbols mark the sidewalks along the route students are encouraged to walk. This will maxi mize the numbers of students along the desig nated walkways. We are recycling batteries at St. Raymond School. Simply, drop your used batteries into the recycling bin in the front foyer of the school. Thank you. Water bottleless Wednesdays Did you know? Only 1 out of every 6 water bottles is recycled? It takes 450 years for a plastic bottle to decompose? City tap water is tested every 4 hours but bottled water only needs to be tested once every 1 3 years? Now you know why we want to eliminate the use of plastic bottles at St. Raymond. On Wednesdays (or everyday) bring a reusable bottle to school (and work) INSTEAD of a plastic water bottle. You will feel better and will help your school and community reduce the amount of plastic in landfills. Let’s all do our part to help — Newsletter In an effort to be more environmentally responsible, St. Raymond School is providing its school newsletter electronically to parents/guardians. By pro viding us with an email address, you will be able to support our efforts to protect our environment by reducing the amount of paper and electricity we use in preparing paper newsletters. We will be able to send you our school newsletter, more efficiently and effectively if we have your email address. Of course, should you prefer not to provide us your email address, we will provide a paper copy of the newsletter to your child (youngest and only) to bring home. If you are interested in receiving the school newsletters via email and NOT a paper copy please fill in the items below and return to your childs teacher as soon as possible Thank you Child s Name Teacher: Email address: Gr. How Can I Help My Child Do Better in School • • Give your child books as birthday or holiday gifts. Children who have books of their own are motivated toward reading. The arrival of books mailed directly to your children with their names on the labels or cartons provides a strong in ducement for reading. Tempt your children with paperbacks. For a number of young readers, there is something formidable about hardcover books; for them. paperbacks are much more attractive. Also, because paperbacks are less costly, you can provide many more and greater variety. Intrigue your children with their own magazine subscription. Few youngsters even those not keen on the idea of reading anything at all can resist the appeal of the arrival in the mail of their own magazine. Reluctant readers suddenly find themselves poring over instructions for easy, do -it-yourself projects, riddles, puzzles and stories. Before they know it, they’re “hooked” on read ing, anxiously awaiting the next issue of their magazine. Get your children interested in newspapers. The writing in newspapers communicate a sense of vitality and immediacy that piques chil dren’s interest. Clip articles that will appeal to them. Also point out that newspaper advertise ments provide a service for the consumer whatever his or her age. Encourage your chil dren to read ads in the newspaper and espe cially in “their” magazines for products that inter est them. Yes, it does take time and effort, but it is time and effort well spent. It is an investment in your children and in their future. — Hand Washing is Important Hand washing. when done correctly is the single most ef-fective way to prevent the spread of infectious dis eases such as the flu. Please help us reinforce the proper tech-niques with your children. Follow these four simple rules: 1. Wet your hands with warm running water. 2. Add soap and rub your hands together, making a soapy lather. Do this away from the running water for at least 15 seconds. Wash the front and back of your hands, between your fingers and under your nails. 3. Rinse your hands well under warm running water. Let the water run back down the sink, not down the el bows. Turn the water off with a paper towel and place it in the garbage. 4. Dry your hands thoroughly with a clean towel. — • Using good hand washing techniques helps to reduce the spread of infectious diseases. In the event your child does get sick, please use discretion in keeping them at home to recover and reduce the potential for them to spread the infection/illness to others. — • Allergies Several St. Raymond students have extreme aller gies to nuts. This also includes any food that con tains nut products. The allergies of some students are so severe that it could be life threatening; they may have a reaction of any item containing any nuts is even in close proximity. Parents are asked to pack “Nut-Free snacks and lunches for their child. As well, please rernnd your child not to share their lunches, snacks or treats. We need your coopera tion in refraining from sending peanut/nut-based food products to school with your child. We recog nize that for some parents/guardians this may be difficult to accommodate. Please contact your son’s/daughter’s teacher for alternatives. Thank you for your assistance in making St. Raymond School a safe environment for all pupils. As recently as last week, students from nearby a school reported being approached by an unknown male on their way home from school. Police are actively investigating this matter. You may wish to take this opportunity to review safety procedures with your child. Peel Police have provided us with the following safety guidelines: • • • • • • • Tell your children to never go anywhere with a stranger, not to talk to strangers and never take anything from them. You also have to teach them what a ‘safe stranger” is in case they need help. A safe stranger includes a police officer, a cashier, a fire fighter, etc. Remind your child to never walk alone—always walk with a group. Develop a “what if” game for the kids to get them thinking of how they would respond if they felt threatened or afraid. Know who your children play with and where they go. This includes keeping a list of their friend’s addresses and phone numbers. Remind your children not to take short cuts through parks, ravines, or other secluded areas. Your child’s body is private. Tell your child that no one may touch the area their bathing suit covers. If someone does or tries to touch them, they should advise you immediately. Teach your children to talk to you immediately when someone does anything that makes them feel strange or uncomfortable. Listen when your children are trying to tell you about something that bothers them and provide them with support and understanding. The safety of our students is our top priority. We want you to know if your child ever tells you about something that seems suspicious, you can always call us for help. If you have any questions or concerns, please call me at the school. Sincerely, W. Schuster Principal St. Raymond
