Prayer for the New Year
Loving God, thank you for the gift of a new
year.
May it be a time to grow in faith and love and
a time to cherish family and friends.
Walk with us each day and
grant a happy year to
all the world.
May the light of Christ shine through us for
others now and forever.
Amen.
Principal’s Message:
A sincere thank you to all students, parents and
staff for attending and/or participating in the various Christmas events that took place just prior to
the holidays. The combination of prayer, charitable support, concerts and other festive endeavours provided an intimate Advent experience
that helped all of us prepare our hearts for the
holiday season. Many thanks to Fr. Mattias for
leading us in our Advent celebration and to the
many staff who assisted in the planning and organizing of these festive events. Also, a huge
thank you to everyone for your continued support
in helping with all of our Christmas projects at St.
Raymond. Nearly 200 gifts were collected for our
―Angel Tree‖ project and much in the way of nonperishable foods and hygiene products helped
support the good work of St. Vincent de Paul.
I sincerely hope that everyone enjoyed a happy
and relaxing holiday. On behalf of Mrs. D’Alessandro, Mrs. Campoli and Ms. Caines and the
entire St. Raymond Staff, wishing you and your
family a 2012 New Year filled with much happiness and success!

St. Raymond is pleased to offer a Youth Faith Ambassador club for students in grades 6, 7, and 8 who are interested in promoting Catholic values within the school community. The group’s purpose is to develop and foster
leadership skills that are consistent with our Catholic values. Members will be involved in planning and organizing
faith based activities such as liturgies, masses, and social
justice events. We are confident that the group will enhance the spiritual development of our student community,
and are pleased with the outstanding turnout of student
interest and involvement.

Lost and Found
Vedrana Radinski—P. Kellar/A. DiPasqua
Donna Kent—L. Wilson/M. Rousseau
February Book Fair
The ―Spring‖ bookfair will be held from January 31st to
February 3rd. Classes will be scheduled to view and purchase books Monday to Thursday. The bookfair will be
open the evening of Thursday, February 2nd to allow parents to come in with their children and visit.
The “Lost and Found Box”, located in the school
office is a good place to start looking for missing
items. Periodically, we remind students to check the
box for any items they may have lost. Please remind
your child(ren) to check the Lost and Found Boxes if
anything is lost.
Indoor Shoes
It is winter…and we experience wet and slushy
weather everyday. In order to avoid tracking mud,
water and snow into the classroom, a reminder to parents to have a pair of indoor shoes for school for their
children. Students will change into this additional pair
of shoes as soon as they come to their class. We appreciate your assistance in this endeavor.
Snow Stays on the Ground
Breakfast For Kids Program
St. Raymond School has begun a nutrition program for all
students through The Boys and Girls Club of Peel. The
program is offered two days a week from 8:10 am to 8:30
am. Our nutrition program is safe and welcoming, reflective of the values and tastes of our community while following Canada’s Food Guide to Healthy Eating. Permission forms are in the school office for all those who are
interested. Thank you to the Nurtanto Family for donating
food for our Breakfast for Kids program.
Winter weather is here and students are reminded that
“Snow Stays on the Ground”. Every child in the
school has been made aware of the importance of this
rule in preventing injury to others. Students are encouraged to constructively use the snow that winter
brings to build snowmen, forts, snow sculptures, etc.
Please assist us by reviewing with your child the dangers of throwing snowballs and the importance of preventing injury to other children. Together we will continue to create a school yard which is safe for all students during winter.

Cold Weather Guidelines
Library Corner
The winter months often bring severe weather conditions. During these times we will reduce the outdoor
playtime or have indoor recess entirely. Keeping this in
mind the following guidelines have been established:
Research confirm the importance
of reading and that reading transforms a child’s life! The following
suggestions are offered as tips to
help your child read.
Degrees Celcius
- 20 or colder - students will be kept indoors
-15 to -20 there will be a modified schedule
Exercise and fresh air are important for successful
learning and parents are asked to ensure that all children come to school dressed for the weather. Even
when it appears that the conditions would warrant indoor recess, students should still be dressed appropriately – hat, mitts or gloves, scarves and boots. Children who come to school are expected to fully participate in the school program, which includes recess
breaks. Fresh air is not likely to worsen a mild cold if
your child is dressed properly. If the cold or illness is
severe, we respectfully suggest that the child not be
sent to school. A statement from your family doctor is
to be presented for any medical reason a child needs
to remain indoors.

Read to your child daily—
make it a pleasurable experience
Stress good listening.
Hold the book upright and turn pages slowly from
front to back.
Encourage your child to look left to right at the sentences and pictures. Use your fingers to help track
eye movement left to right.
Occasionally point out new words but do not focus
on them too long.
Have a good location where children can keep
books and browse if they wish.
Use words such as: front, cover, open, turn page,
back.
Place a green dot on the first page to help your
child look for the dot to start reading.
Teach your child to look at the left page first and
model this each time you read.
When children read books that truly interest them, their
minds are nourished and the quality of their lives is
raised forever.

Kids program.
Kiss and Ride Update
School site safety is a major concern here at St. Raymond School. The primary concern is vehicle congestion as parents attempt to part as close to the school as
possible. This creates a serious concern for the students of St. Raymond School as parents stop and park
their cars within prohibited areas (Kiss and Ride
Lane). When vehicles with no driver sit in the Kiss
and Ride Lane they are obstructing traffic on the
school driveway and fire routes. The success of the
Kiss and Ride program depends on you. St. Raymond
school is asking parents, guardians, members of our
community, staff and students to use the Kiss and
Ride Lane responsibly. Thank you.

Winter Walk Day
Join your friends and community for Winter Walk Day –
Wednesday, February 8, 2012.
Get rid of those winter blahs and discover the joys of winter walking to school.
Water bottless Wednesdays
Did you know? Only 1 out of every
6 water bottles is recycled? It takes
450 years for a plastic bottle to decompose? City tap
water is tested every 4 hours but bottled water only
needs to be tested once every 1 – 3 years?
Now you know why we want to eliminate the use of plastic bottles at St. Raymond. On Wednesdays (or everyday) bring a reusable bottle to school (and work) INSTEAD of a plastic water bottle. You will feel better and
will help your school and community reduce the amount
of plastic in landfills. Let’s all do our part to help !!!!
Newsletter
In an effort to be more environmentally responsible, St. Raymond
School is providing its school newsletter electronically to parents/
guardians. By providing us with an
email address, you will be able to
support our efforts to protect our
environment by reducing the
amount of paper and electricity we use in preparing paper
newsletters. We will be able to send you our school
newsletter, more efficiently and effectively if we have your
email address. Of course, should you prefer not to provide us your email address, we will provide a paper copy
of the newsletter to your child (youngest and only) to
bring home.
If you are interested in receiving the school newsletters
via email and NOT a paper copy, please fill in the items
below and return to your child’s teacher as soon as possible. Thank you.

Tips for dressing for winter walking:
• Keep hands and head covered to
prevent heat loss
• On really cold days wear a scarf
over your face and mouth
• Wear warm, waterproof boots
• Wear a warm coat that deflects the
wind
• Woolen clothing helps to retain the
heat
• Wear clothing or carry knapsacks
with reflective material – it’s important to be seen
• If possible, change wet clothes at
school – tuck an extra pair of socks
and mitts into knapsacks
• Below -25oC is considered too cold
for walking so move your walk indoors or select another day for outdoor activities or walking to school.
Earth Rangers visited St. Raymond School on Thursday, October 6, 2011. Students viewed a ―Bring Back
the Wild‖ presentation and participated in a ―Kids in
Action‖ environmental fundraising initiative.
Funds raised by our students for Earth Rangers will
increase awareness about the importance of protecting wildlife across Canada, and help protect habitats
for animals. This year, Earth Rangers is working with
the Nature Conservancy of Canada to protect the
habitats for the Pine Marten, Plains Bison, Spotted
Turtle and Monarch Butterfly.
We are proud that the St. Raymond Community raised
$1, 339.17 to Bring Back the Wild!
