May VIRTUE ~ ACCEPTANCE

This month we will celebrate the virtue of „acceptance‟.

One of the great wonders of the world we live in is that no two people are exactly alike. We may share biological families, national identify or cultural and ethnic identity but we are all very unique and distinct creations. God breaks the mold every time, and that is a fantastic fact of life.

PRINCIPALS

Fax-7540 tp://www.dpcd s A Mother’s Love

A Mother‟s love is something that

No one can explain,

It is made of deep devotion, of sacrifice and pain,

It is endless and unselfish and enduring come what may,

For nothing can destroy it or take that love away…

It is patient and forgiving when all others are forsaking,

And it never fails or falters even though the heart is breaking…

It believes beyond believing when the world around condemns,

And it glows with all the beauty of the rarest, brightest gems

A many splendored miracle, man cannot understand

And another wondrous evidence of God‟s tender guiding hand.

EQAO 2013

EQAO (Education Quality and Accountability Office) testing of our grades 3 and 6 students will take place from

May 27th to June 7th. Kindly avoid scheduling any appointments or anything else that will take your child out out of school during these dates.

We ask that parents work family vacations, appointments and other interruptions around these scheduled dates to maximize their child„s potential during the assessment. It is critical that students be pre-sent each day of the assessment and that they arrive on time.

We thank the grade 3 and 6 teachers who continue to prepare the students for the upcoming EQAO testing to make it a successful and stress free experience.

How Can you Help Your Child with Testing?

First of all, talk with your child about the purpose of EQAO testing and reduce the anxiety related to any type of testing

situation. Encourage your child to do his/her best.

Remind your child that the assessment will have questions asking on things that they have already learned in class. You

should also be sure that your child has enough sleep, eats a nutritious breakfast and is well hydrated.

Always celebrate your child„s successes and hard work each day.

SAFE SCHOOL COMMITTEE/ CATHOLIC HEALTH

ACTION TEAM

St. Raymond is committed to providing a safe, caring and inclusive school. We continue to encourage positive and healthy peer-to-peer relationships.

We will continue to deliver the message of anti-bullying throughout the entire school year, incorporating all of the virtues, in the hopes of creating a school where ALL students can feel safe and inclusive.

We remind the students regularly about safe practices during recess times such as no contact sports, no play fighting, and reporting problems to the teacher rather than taking matters into their own hands.

Cops For Cancer

St. Raymond supported the Cops For Cancer charity.

Students who donated a loonie or toonie received a

Badge of Honour to write their names on and placed on a banner supplied by the police department. This banner was displayed at the Erin Mills Town Centre.

Thanks to all who donated.

Parents please note yard supervision begins at

8:15 a.m. Students should not arrive before supervision starts.

PARENTS/VISITORS AT ST. RAYMOND

If you need to sign out your child we request that you do so at the office. In the event that you need to drop items off for your child, please check in at the office. UPDATE YOUR RECORDS

Parents, if your home phone number, cell number or work number has changed please notify the school office. It is necessary to have current information in order for us to keep in contact with you.

LIFE THREATENING ALLERGIES

We would appreciate the cooperation of the entire school community by NOT sending any lunches or snacks that contain peanuts/nut products, seafood/shellfish, eggs, chickpeas, green peas, lentils and kiwi . This includes products like Nutella as well as Sushi. Please also be aware that some salad dressings contain oyster juice which can cause a serious anaphylaxis response. Please do not send any food products to mark a child‟s birthday. It is also prohibited to send your child to school with any WowButter sandwiches. We want St. Raymond to be a safe environment for all students. Thank you for your assistance.

SPRING TALENT SHOW

The weather might not be too warm yet, but spring is definitely in the air at St. Raymond! Students from grades 5-8 will begin to get busy preparing for our upcoming Spring Concert and are very excited about having an opportunity to display their many talents to all their parents and friends. This year's show will be held on Wednesday, June 12 for the day performance and

Thursday, June 13 th for the evening performance in the gym.

Please mark this date on your calendar and plan to join us for this wonderful presentation of song and dance.

USE OF SCHOOL PHONES

Students will only be permitted to use the school phone in cases of emergency. An emergency is considered to be an illness or injury. Calling home because it is raining, and/ or for forgotten shoes, wanting to go to a friend‟s house or other minor issues are not considered emergencies. A reminder that students are not allowed to use cell phones or pagers during school hours. If you have a cell phone it should remain off during the school hours.

PERSONAL ELECTRONIC DEVICES (PEDS) ON SCHOOL

PROPERTY

As part of our efforts to promote and maintain a positive

Catholic climate in our schools, the board approved a policy regarding Personal Electronic Devises (PEDS) on school property. In this regard, all PEDs (i.e. cell phones, pagers and video games i.e.PSP‟s, IPods, etc) must be kept out of sight, turned off and not used within school premises or during school-sanctioned activities. To prevent the loss or damage of

PEDs, we encourage students to leave their PEDs at home as the school cannot be responsible for their safe keeping.

APPROPRIATE SCHOOL ATTIRE

With the warm weather upon us, we remind students of appropriate dress. Excessively ripped or torn clothing is not acceptable school attire. All students are reminded that the midriff and shoulders should be covered at all times. While we want our students to be comfortable in the warmer weather, we must also maintain a learning environment that reflects our primary focus.

Please ensure that your child has protection from the sun by using sunscreen and wearing a hat on sunny days.

Dehydration can be serious! Students should bring their St.

Raymond reusable drink bottles to school, however they are not to be taken outside in the yard.

GRADE 8 TRIP TO MONTREAL

Plans are underway and the students and staff are gearing up for the Grade 8 trip to Montreal. Students who will not participate in the trip will be involved in exciting activities at the school and our local community.

Tuesday, June 25 th at Apollo Convention Centre during the day.

Parents will be invited to attend the evening Graduation

Ceremony that will take place at 6:30 at St. Raymond School in our gymnasium. The Grade 8 Graduation Mass will take place at St. Joseph Parish on Wednesday, June 26 th at 10:00 am.

LOST AND FOUND

Many items have been placed in the lost and found table found outside the gym. If your child has misplaced an item, please remind them to check the lost and found table. Items that are not collected by early June will be donated.

LIVING OUR FAITH VIRTUES ASSEMBLY

Each month, all students will gather for an assembly that will focus on the Virtue of the month. The assemblies will be lead by St. Raymond‟s Anti Bullying Team, the Youth Faith

Ambassadors and our Stage Crew. The assembly will begin with a liturgy followed by a presentation or discussion regarding an anti bullying theme. Three students from each class will be recognized and receive an award for each of the following categories: Christian Living Award, Most Improved Award and

Academics Award. Parents of the recipients will be invited via a letter to attend the assembly but all parents are welcome!

Our next assembly for the months of May and June will take place on Monday, June 24th.

ADMINISTRATION OF MEDICATION

A reminder that children are not allowed to keep ANY medication on their persons, in their desk, backpack or anywhere in their classroom, unless ordered by their doctor. In such case, documentation is necessary. All dispensing and storage of ANY medication must occur from the Office.

KISS & RIDE PROGRAM

Please be advised that NO CARS are allowed to park in the kiss n ride/fire route lane or drive through lane in the front of

the school. If parents are picking up and waiting for their child they are to use the designated side streets. Please ensure that you read all street signs prior to parking on any side streets. It is also prohibited to park at Whitehorn Public

School. Please do not park at Whitehorn Public School as all parking spots are just enough for Whitehorn Public

School staff.

The city of Mississauga has been patrolling and have ticketed cars who are in violation of these parking procedures. St. Raymond School or the Dufferin Peel

Catholic District School Board will not be responsible for any fines that have been given to cars that are not following city parking by laws.

When students exit the car in the Kiss N Ride lane, they should use the passenger doors only to exit vehicles this will ensure students will be dropped off on the school sidewalk safely.

Under NO circumstances should vehicles be backing up or going the wrong way or parking. No vehicles are to park in the drive thru lane at any time. Absolutely NO CARS are permitted to drive in the bus lane.

School Kiss & Ride should improve the traffic flow and ultimately create a safer environment for the children.

Please be advised that teachers will not be opening car doors during the Kiss N Ride duty. For the safety of all teachers, students, and vehicles, teachers will only supervise students as they exit the vehicles. Parents may assist their child on exiting the vehicle, but are kindly asked not to park in the Kiss N Ride lane. We thank you for your cooperation with this matter.

SHARELIFE GARAGE SALE

St. Raymond garage sale took place in our gym on Thursday,

April 25 th from 3:00-7:00 pm for our community. We would like to extend our gratitude to all families and staff who donated items and supported the event. Together, we raised $744.30.

All proceeds will be donated to ShareLife.

LIBRARY CORNER

Children respond well to routine, so if possible, make reading together something that you and your child look forward to every day. Here are some ideas about how to make the most of this time together.

Create a daily reading time:

 Set aside a special time each day when you can give your full attention to reading with your child

 Find out what your child is passionate about and learn as much as you can about this topic

 Go to the library together or browse online for material

 Use books featuring your child‟s favourite character from a specific TV show

 Use great websites from home or your local library to read online

 Include a spot for games, puzzles, comics or software

Read books and other materials in your child‟s first language.

This will help your child with reading in English and French and other languages as well

HEAD START

Head lice are always present in the community. By checking your child‟s head once a week for head lice, you will catch it early and treat it before it has a chance to spread. Should you suspect that your child(ren) have head lice, please notify the school.

Remember, an infestation of lice is not a reflection on the cleanliness of your child. In fact, students with appropriate hygiene habits are as susceptible to lice as any other group

Any infected student will need to be checked before re-entry to class. Thank you in advance for your co-operation.

Throughout the school year, students experience the mystery of Jesus

Christ through celebrations, liturgies and mass. We encourage all of our families to maintain these traditions and obligations throughout the year by attending Mass as a family every

Sunday. St. Joseph’s Parish mass times are as follows:
