April VIRTUE ~ LOVE
Easter Prayer
Vice Principal
Mrs. S. Galvao
During the month of April we focus on the Virtue of Love.
God has given us many guidelines and examples of how
to live. God sent his Son Jesus to make sure that we
could see what life could be like. Jesus made one lesson
clear above all other lessons and that is the lesson to
love. Love is not about us; it is about forgetting ourselves
and looking out for the good of others.
Lord of life We pray for all who bring
your word of life As a light to those in
darkness For those who bring your
word of peace To those enslaved by
fear For those who bring your word of
love To those in need of comfort Lord
of love and Lord of peace Lord of
resurrection life Be known Through our
lives and through your power.
Amen.

Under NO circumstances should vehicles be backing up or

supervise students as they exit the vehicles. Parents may
assist their child on exiting the vehicle, but are kindly

LIBRARY CORNER
The Forest of Reading® is Canada's largest recreational
reading program! This initiative of the Ontario Library
Association (OLA) offers seven reading programs to encourage
a love of reading in people of all ages. The Forest helps
celebrate Canadian books, publishers, authors and illustrators.
More than 250,000 readers participate annually.
St. Raymond students have been reading the nominated books
from the Forest of Reading Award Nomination Lists. For the
second year at St. Raymond, a Wiki enabled students to post a
review of the book he/she had read. Countless reviews were
posted over the last three months from students ranging from
grade 3 to 8 and their teachers. Teachers from Kindergarten to
Grade 3 also posted reviews on behalf of their classes.
Because of the overwhelming student participation, the Forest
of Reading Wiki was a huge success! As a result, the Forest of
Reading Wiki will continue next year when the new nominees
are announced in October. We look forward to reading the
reviews.
On March 25th, students who fulfilled the required number of
books read, were eligible to vote for his/her favourite book

HEAD START
Head lice are always present in the community. By checking
your child‘s head once a week for head lice, you will catch it
early and treat it before it has a chance to spread. Should you
suspect that your child(ren) have head lice, please notify the
school.
Remember, an infestation of lice is not a reflection on the
cleanliness of your child. In fact, students with appropriate
hygiene habits are as susceptible to lice as any other group
Any infected student will need to be checked before re-entry to
class. Thank you in advance for your co-operation.
Peel Health (www.peelregion.ca/health/) is available to

HOLY DAYS OF OBLIGATION
It is important that our children continue to be
exposed to our Catholic Community through
experiences at the parish.
The Sunday celebration of the Lord‘s Day and
the Eucharist is at the heart of the Church‘s
life. ‗Sunday is the day on which the Paschal
Mystery is celebrated in light of the apostolic tradition and is to
be observed as the foremost holy day of obligation in the
universal Church.‘
Throughout the school year, students experience the mystery
of Jesus Christ through celebrations, liturgies and mass. We
encourage all of our families to maintain these traditions
and obligations throughout the year by attending Mass as
a family every Sunday. St. Joseph’s Parish mass times are
as follows:
Saturday mornings – 9:00 a.m.
Sunday – 8:00 a.m. 9:30 a.m. 11:00 a.m 12:30 p.m.

EARTH DAY: Are you ready for the CHALLENGE?!?
Did you know that school lunches are a major source of
waste in Ontario??? In fact, the average student’s lunch
generates a total of 30 kilograms of waste per school year,
or an average of 8500
kilograms of waste
per school per year.
In an effort to engage
students
in small
environmental
initiatives
that can make a big impact, St. Raymond School is
participating in the Waste-Free Lunch Challenge (WFLC) on
Monday April 22nd, to celebrate Earth Day.
CATHOLIC HEALTHY ACTION TEAM
Nutrition, children and the school environment - Why
promote nutrition at school?
It‘s simple: Good nutrition equals good learning! Nutrition plays
a vital role in healthy child development. Nutrition helps children
to obtain the energy and essential nutrients they require for
healthy growth, activity levels, and school achievement.
Healthy children are better learners because they concentrate
better, have more energy to stay alert and engage more in
learning. As a result they have higher test scores, have less
absenteeism, and engage in better behaviors and coping skills.
Healthy eating can be learned and influenced through
education and social supports in a Healthy School environment.
Common practices include: nutrition programs such as milk
days, serving catered lunches based on the School Food and
Beverage Policy, and sharing healthy eating tips with parents
via the school newsletter or website. But there‘s more…
Positive role modeling.
Positive role modeling happens when teachers, school staff,
coaches and volunteers enjoy eating well and talk about their
habits in a positive way. Students who witness adults enjoying
healthy food and beverages are more likely to see this as
normal behaviour, and therefore learn to value healthy eating
and feeling good about themselves. The skills and knowledge
children learn at a young age help guide their food choices
during childhood and into adulthood. Establishing a healthy
eating pattern early on is an important factor in preventing
chronic disease. By role modeling and teaching students about
healthy eating, you may find that your own body image is
positively affected too. Role modeling is a cost effective, easily
implemented and sustainable strategy to support the Healthy
School environment.
The St. Raymond Catholic Healthy Action Team is comprised
of Teachers, our Public Health Nurse and Grade 6 students
who continue to meet in order to build great awareness of
healthy lifestyles for the St. Raymond Community. The Team
has decorated the school with posters and a display table in the
front foyer of the school. Our next team initiative will be the
BIG CRUNCH event. More information is forthcoming!
INTRAMURAL/ EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
This month our Intermediate students have participated in
intramurals during the nutritional break and the focused sport
has been basketball. All students have been encouraged to
participate in intramurals as it is an excellent opportunity for
students to develop social skills, co-operative play, and daily
physical activity. Given the warm weather approaching and the
preparations for the Spring Concert in the gym, intramurals will
not take place during the months of May and June.
JUNIOR GIRLS FITNESS CLUB
Congratulations to all junior girls who took part in the Junior
Girls' Fitness Club. Over the course of 6 after-school sessions
throughout March, the girls participated in different fitness
routines and learned about best practices for various muscle
groups. Each member continued to impress their coaches week
after week by demonstrating tremendous strength, selfconfidence and perserverence! Hopefully, they will
now continue to practice their new skill set during their free
time. Well done, girls!
JUNIOR GILRS BASKETBALL
St. Raymond Junior Girls Basketball team played St. Dunstan
School and won! The score was 19 - 4 points. Go Rockets go!
JUNIOR BOYS BASKETBALL
The Junior boys basketball season is underway. St.

showed composure and good teamwork, coming away with
a hard fought and well deserved victory. We wish them luck for
the remainder of the season!
LEGO CLUB
Some students have expressed an interest in the start up of a
Lego club. Families who are doing spring cleaning and have
Lego that they would like to donate for this club are welcome to
do so. Please bring to the office.
GIRLS ON THE RUN IS COMING ONCE AGAIN
Girls on the Run Ontario is a positive youth development

Wednesday‘s from 3:00-4:00 from April to June 2013. The
