St. Paul Secondary School’s Principal’s Message

St. Paul Secondary School’s
Principal’s Message
It seems like we just started the
school year and as I write this article
it is already November, with Remembrance Day just around the corner. As
I enter my fourth year as Principal at
St. Paul’s, I sense that this has been
the best start to date. Having initiated
an Alternative education program
and a Senior Leadership/Mentoring
course, we are beginning to see the
advantages of doing education in a
different way.
Rather than simply review the many
good news stories so far this year, I
would like to comment on the real
advantages of a strong parent, school,
and parish relationship. Last year,
parent council initiated a conversation regarding the timing of our parent- teacher nights and the reporting
of absences and lates. As a response
to this, we moved our parent-teacher
night ahead to October 22 and initiated a postal communication system
to advise parents of continuous lates
and absenteeism of any students.
Our experience of the last parentteacher night was that there was
significant improvement in parental
attendance and genuine appreciation
for improved monitoring of lates and
absences by the school community.
None of this can happen unless parents are involved in the most significant task that parents and guardians
are called to: investing time in your
teenager’s education.
Among the many observations that
I make with parents is the new reality of education in the digital world
that finds so many of us (and here I
include myself) often confused about
the basics of a catholic high school
diploma. Today’s secondary schools

have very little in common with parents’
former schools and therefore it is important
to invest the time to witness all of the options that a digitalized world offers today’s
students. There is no going back to “the
good old days”, but some of the habits and
skill sets of then are still relevant to today’s
schools.
This year our Open House for Grade 8
students is on Thursday, December 10th
and I would encourage you to share that
date and newsletter with neighbours. More
importantly, for parents of Grade 9 and
10 students, we will be holding a special
evening to profile our Specialist High Skills
Majors (SHSM) diploma programs on Tuesday, January 26th at 7:30 pm. These diploma
programs in Broadcasting, Construction for
a Changing Environment and the Environment are certificated, red seal diplomas, of
8-10 compulsory credits in Grades 11 and 12
that are open to students in all streams at St.
Paul Secondary. These programs represent
the cutting edge of secondary school education in this Board and are open to any secondary student in the Dufferin Peel Catholic
District School Board.
In May of this year, our school was approached by York University to establish a
one year pilot program to act as a Liaison
for their Faculty of Education’s concurrent
program. This involves partnering 15 York
University students with our teachers as a
part of their teacher training program. Our
preliminary feedback on the project is extremely positive and we are hoping to open
up more of the York University campus
potential shortly for our students and staff.
There are only nine other secondary schools
in the GTA that have a similar arrangement
at this time.
Our Awards Breakfast in October continues
to be a student highlight for the fall season.
Parents and grandparents bring that special
flavor to the event and we will be looking
at more and diverse ways to profile this
special example of student achievement in
the future.
We have extended our Library hours until
4:30 pm to make study more accessible for
many of our athletes for whom practices
aren’t always immediately after school. As
well, our Library continues to be open from
Lights, Students in place, Action…
Don’t Miss It! TN 09
The year is off to a great start, with lots of broken legs! (all good-figuratively speaking of
course). Both of Mr. Guilherme’s, junior and senior, drama classes have been hard at work.
Once again, Talent Night returns
to St. Paul for what is looking like
another fantastic show.
The senior students (Grades 11 and 12) started their year studying children’s books and how
these stories continue to survive and impact our lives. After study of some of our favourite
tales, the students decided to bring three of their much loved stories to life; Robert Munsch’s
Something Good (Cole Rundle, Jonathon Faria, Chantel DeSousa, Ciera Chin, Alysa Santarosa ,Connor Navia and Amanda Dobson) Sesame Street’s Cookie Monster and the Cookie
Tree (Natalia Macko, Nicole Dalli, Ishanaa Rampersadsingh, Staci Neely, Joseph Torosantucci, Stephen Covic, Emiliy De Luca and Matthew Bestvater Tennison) and two versions
of Walt Disney’s Cinderella (featuring all students). Once they had written, rehearsed and
polished their plays, the senior drama students invited the Grade One class from Queen of
Heaven Elementary to be their audience and critics. The reviews were excellent!
The junior class (Grade 10) has been busy getting acquainted with the wonderful world of
theatre and all its facets. From stage nomenclature, to introductory monologues, to radio
plays, the world is just becoming a stage for these budding stars.
Both classes recently attended a performance of the new Andrew Lloyd Webber/Ben Elton
musical The Boys in the Photograph. This a coming-of-age story about a group of young
men and women in Belfast, in the late 1960s, who are involved with a local soccer team at
the start of a 30-year civil war. Some are drawn into the conflict, while others stand aside
wanting only to be allowed to live and love in peace. It is a story of ordinary people in an
extraordinary situation, told with humour and compassion in a powerful and passionate musical. Both funny and heartbreaking, The Boys In The Photograph pulled no punches when
exploring the reality of sectarian conflict. At the same time this powerful and passionate
musical was also a joyous celebration of the freedom that love can bring. The students rose to
their feet, cheered, and screamed as the game of soccer - the ballet of soccer - was recreated
on stage with some of the most originally exciting choreography ever seen in musical theatre.
Continue to tune in, ‘cause you never know when you might see St. Paul’s own boys and
girls in their very own famous photographs…
October 14 & 15 were busy as a
large number of our talented students
auditioned for this year’s popular
variety show. Vocalists, rock bands,
violinists and acoustic strummers
have been honing their acts over the
last few weeks as they prepare for the
show.
Behind the scenes, posters are being
put up, tickets designed, lights are
being set and film crews are developing short movies and graphics to
support the show.
Backstage and video crews have been
practicing at their stations in order
to bring you a well polished, professional show.
Our MC’s, Skylar Brugmans, David
Czubat, Patty Oliveira and Lukas
Stabile have been hard at work preparing their own brand of entertainment to string all of the acts together.
Talent Night will be on stage on
Friday, November 20 at 7:00 pm.
Parents, families and friends are all
welcome. Tickets for this one night
only show can be purchased in the
cafeteria in advance ($10.00) or at
the door ($12.00).

English Department News & Notes
7:30am everyday.
Get Involved
Members of the English Department are
involved in many aspects of the school life.
Students are encouraged to become involved
in all of the many clubs and sports that are
available at St. Paul.
This November will see the startup of our school Breakfast Club
(organized by our Student Council
Office) every morning from 7:45
until 8:10 am. The students and
staff advisors will be offering light
breakfast items for any student for a
minimal donation to make sure that
hungry stomachs don’t get in the way
of learning. If parents/guardians have
any corporate connections within the
food industry, you are invited to contact Ms. Lothian at 77296 to discuss
any assistance you can offer.
It has been a turnaround year for our
Girls Flag Football Team who maintained an undefeated record through
October. Our volleyball teams (both
female and male) are having outstanding seasons with playoffs just
around the corner. As basketball and
hockey begin tryouts, we want all
parents to encourage your sons and
daughters to become involved with
our many teams as it will round out
their academic life at the school.
Our new Parent Council co-chairs
Alex Morell and Christine Gutt have
been very busy on your behalf this
year and I would encourage you
to become involved in our Parent
Council.
Thursday masses at St. Paul with Fr.
Noel and Fr. Rudy are parent-friendly, and start at 7:40 am. A great way
to start the day.
Now that the construction has been
completed on Atwater Avenue and
our weather takes a dip to the colder
side, I would encourage everyone to
get an earlier start to keep that perfect
attendance record intact. We do
anticipate some more illnesses with
the H1N1 virus and with the regular
flu season upon us. Please contact the
Attendance Office to make sure our
records are accurate.
May all of the blessings of the
Advent season be upon you and your
families.
Act Now is a social justice committee; it
stands for A Chance to Notice Our World
and is run by Ms. E. Vono (English Department) and Ms. C. Hastings (Religion
Department) and a group of dedicated
students. They are currently involved in the
Tulip campaign which allows students the
opportunity to purchase a tulip to honour
a deceased family member or friend. The
name will be entered in to the Book of Remembrance in our Chapel, and tulips will be
planted in the front garden and at the Marian
Grotto.
As this newsletter goes to press, Mr. J.P.
Guilherme is preparing students in the
Drama Program, with assistance from Mr.
Brugmans’ Studio30 students, for the November 11th Remembrance Day presentation. It promises to be both informative and
a moving theatrical performance.
On October 15th St. Paul held an Awards
Breakfast organized by Ms. M. DiCarlo
(English Department) and Ms. C. DeMarco
(Science & Phys Ed Department) which
honoured students from Grades 9 to 11
(2008-09) who have excelled academically.
Get involved in your school and help make
your school experience a full and enjoyable
one.
Writing Contests
All members of the English Department
try to keep students informed of the many
writing, essay and public speaking contests
which are available to students. If you have
an interest in this area, see Mr. P. Kay in the
English Department office or Room 217 for
the latest contest postings.
Excursions
The members of the English Department
do attempt to have English come alive in
the form of excursions, trips or workshops.
Trips are always a great experience for
students; they are usually well attended and
they help to make the everyday curriculum
come alive. Please know that with all trips
we try to keep the curriculum our priority,
along with fair costs and a safe and enjoy-
able experience. Please support your son or
daughter’s participation in these trips.
The most recent trips to Stratford have been
with the classes of Mrs. S. Bentivoglio and
Mrs. A. Romao to see Edmond Rostand’s
(translated and adapted by Anthony Burgess)
Cyrano de Bergerac (October 6th) and to see
William Shakespeare’s Macbeth (October
22nd). The next trip is to the University of
Toronto’s Hart House Theatre to see Hamlet.
Ms. M. DiCarlo and Mrs. S. Bentivoglio will
take Grade 11 students on December 3rd.
Literacy Committee
The St. Paul Literacy Committee is headed
by Ms. E. Vono (English Department) and
Ms. V. Sudac (Academic Resource Department) and is in the process of developing
strategies for the OSSLT test which will
be taking place on April 8th, 2010. There
will be Literacy Blitz Weeks in December
and March. Grades 9 and 10 teachers are
committed to making sure that their courses
support the OSSLT initiative and that the
students are prepared for the test.
The OSSLT is a large-scale assessment
written by all Grade 10 students in Ontario
public and separate schools. The OSSLT
has been in place since 2000. Its purpose
is to assess the reading and writing skills
attained by all students who have completed
the Grade 9 curriculum. The test is set by the
Education Quality and Accountability Office
(EQAO), an arms-length agency of the Ontario Ministry of Education. It is important
to reduce the anxiety that many students feel
going in to the test.
Parents and students are strongly urged to
visit the EQAO website [www.eqao.com];
it is a fine website with Teacher, Parent and
Student sections containing all information
anyone could possibly need for the upcoming OSSLT.
Thank You (from Mr. P. Kay)
As the new Department Head of English,
ESL and Drama I would like to thank all of
the members of the St. Paul community for
making me feel very welcome. Parents and
Parent Council, teaching colleagues, the administration, and all of the support staff have
been fantastically welcoming and helpful.
The St. Paul community is truly blessed to
have such a dynamic and committed group
of educational partners.

Physical Education
Outdoor Education
The Grade 9 and 10
Physical Education
classes once again
went on a 10km hike
of the Bruce Trail
led by the former
president of the
Bruce Trail Association, Greg Vincent.
The classes hiked
part of the trail in
Caledon near the
Forks of the Credit.
The classes enjoyed
beautiful weather
and gorgeous fall foliage, to really admire
the peace and tranquility of God’s Creation.
The Grade 11 Physical Education classes
spent a day up at the Silvercreek Outdoor
Education Centre undertaking many cooperative games in the outdoors. They had
the opportunity to get to know each other
through new experiences involving individual and team-building activities.
Athletics
Another year is upon us here at St. Paul and
the gym is busy as usual before school with
teams starting practice at 6:45am, and after
school with practices running up until 5:00
pm. There is never a dull moment in our
gymnasium and athletic fields.

School Spirit is up this year with SPAC
up and running with great enthusiasm and
creativity. Thank you to Ms.
Hontar for running this great
group of students.
The crowds have been great
for all of our home games this
season to cheer on our teams.
SPAC also ran our first PEP
rally in recent history acknowledging our fall teams.
Senior Boys Volleyball
For the Senior Boys Volleyball this was an
unbeaten regular season with a perfect 7 – 0
record.
Earlier in the season the
Senior Boys advanced
to the Semi-Finals at the
Victory Volleyball Tournament and on Friday
the boys made it all the
way to the Consolation
Championship Game
only to come up just
short losing in a tough 3
sets to Aurora.
The Senior Boys Volleyball team played in

a “AA” OFSAA semi-final game on
November 6 to take on the winner of
Clarkson and T.L. Kennedy- which
also took place here at St. Paul.
At press time, the fate of the team
wasn’t known but we’re hoping for
the championship and another OFSAA appearance.
Varsity Girls Flag Football
The Lady Wolverines Flag
Football
team could
sum up their
season with
three words
- Preparation,
Execution, and
Personnel.
The 2009 season
started the first day back
to school in September with
the veterans taking the field
to get a jump-start on this years’
competition. In a pre-season tournament, the team went undefeated in 4
games and beat the Tier 1 champions
of 2008 by a score of 18 – 0. The
team was prepared and excited to
enter the regular season.
e
r
i
n
e
Throughout the season the Lady
Wolverines were able to dominate
most of their opponents by executing
their assignments on the field to perfection, finishing the regular season
averaging 27.5 points on offence
and giving up an average of only 5.1
points per game.
A part of the team’s success can be
attributed to the collaborative efforts
of the coaching staff
which includes Mr.
Minott, Mr. McTiernan, and
Mr. Schuster
in combination with 23
dedicated athletes who were
all focused
on making this
football program
something special.
The future looks great for
the Lady Wolverines as the
team is quite young and the up
and coming stars of Grade 9 are
being mentored by some of the
best athletes in Peel - who by the way
are either in Grade 10 or Grade 11.

athletes had a great season. In addition to
attending ROPSSAA, the team participated
in three meets: St. Marcellinus Bagpipe
Classic, Abby Park Invitational, and Heart

members included: Lauren Jansa, Tanner
Blomme, Cara Coutts, Katelyn Turk, Christina Korneitchouk, Rory Coutts, Austin Nix,
and Braeden Szucs.

Junior Boys Volleyball
The Junior Boys Volleyball Team has come
a long way from the first days of try-outs.
They have worked hard this season with
heart and determination and have seen success. The boys have clinched the top of their
division after regular season play with a 5-0
record.
Throughout the season
many of the athletes
demonstrated determination, dedication, and
perseverance to beat
their personal bests.
This season was exceptionally enjoyable
due to fantastic weather
conditions for running.
The entire team showed
a tremendous amount of
school spirit.
Varsity Girls Basketball
The team finished the regular season
undefeated and went into the playoffs with a great chance to become
the new ROPSSAA champions.
The girls have had an outstanding season
thus far, exceeding all expectations. In early
October, they advanced to the quarter finals
of the prestigious Fall Classic tournament in
Ottawa. Over 70 teams entered this competition. They finished off the
season with an impressive
win over The Woodlands
Secondary School.
Proper preparation, completing
tasks with high efficiency and having people in positions which bring
out the best of their gifts/talents is
turning out to be the equation for the
perfect season.
The future looks incredibly bright as 8 of the 10
team members are either in
Grade 9 or 10. Therefore,
this group of girls will be
together for a long time.
Cross Country Team
We wish the girls luck as
they enter both league and
Double A playoffs over the
next couple of weeks.
Our Wolverine Cross Country
e
The juniors also competed in the Victory
Volleyball Tournament which resulted in a
silver medal for St. Paul.
With play-offs next week, the boys are going
away to the Mayfield Tournament, in order
to prepare themselves for the competition
ahead.
Parent Council
Chaplain’s Corner
The School Council welcomes all Parents/
Guardians to attend our monthly meetings.
Each meeting is planned to provide useful
information to the parents/guardians of St.
Paul students.
There certainly has been a great deal of worry and concern about the H1N1 virus in
the news over these past several weeks. There are a number of health protocols that
have been implemented and are being followed here at St. Paul School. God amazingly created us such that there are many ways for a person to check their state of health.
Our body usually sends us clues such as a head-ache, a sore throat or stuffy nose to
indicate that we are not well and that we should take medical action. A thermometer
is a useful tool to check the temperature of our bodies to see if we are running a fever.
As Christians, we know that we are not simply physical bodies running around the
earth. All of us have a soul and a spiritual dimension. I think it would be great if there
was a spiritual thermometer that we could use to check our spiritual health. The spiritual thermometer might be calibrated using St. John’s admonition that it is better to be
either hot or cold and not lukewarm. The temperature of the St. Paul School Community has really been hot these past few weeks. The success of the Thanksgiving Food
Drive was red-hot extraordinary. Our school received a warm letter from St. Dominic
Church thanking us for our generosity. Due to the recession there is tremendous need
in our local community as families struggle to pay bills and put food on their tables.
Our Thanksgiving Food Drive was the largest in recent history and this provides
hope during a time of economic uncertainty. The Students and Staff involved in ACT
NOW deserve our thanks for helping to coordinate this annual campaign. While I am
on the subject of activities that are hot I would like to acknowledge the great work of
the new M&M’s. We had our opening school Mass a few weeks ago at St. Dominic
Church and the liturgical music was on fire! I would like to thank the M&M’s for
their dedicated service. I would like to thank Mr. Penkul, Ms. Laxton, Ms. Primier,
Ms. Periera, Ms. Baglione and Mr. Minot for not putting out the liturgical music fire.
They keep things hot, hot, hot.
Speakers are selected by the school council.
When selecting speakers we consider the
important issues that parents want to learn
and hear about. Information about School
Parent Council meetings is available on the
school website and advertised on the L.E.D.
board at the front of the school.
The council members were pleased to be at
the Grade 9 Open House September 24th, to
greet parents and students. We are in a great
school, with teaching staff that care about
the success of the students in our school.
St. Paul School Council Co-Chairs, Chris G.
and Alex M. attended the Central Committee for Catholic School Councils (CCCSC)
meeting October 15th for the family of
chairs meeting with the superintendent and
principals from Mississauga. It was a well
attended meeting and appreciation for volunteering was communicated. There are four
high schools in Mississauga East; the chair
for the family of these high schools is from
John Cabot Secondary School. We will keep
you posted when we have more information. The next CCCSC meeting takes place
on Sat. Nov. 7th and your Co-Chairs will be
attending, the Training for School Council
Executive Members. We look forward to
learning more to benefit our school.
On a social note, attending the St. Dominic’s
“Foods of the World” dinner on Sunday, Oct.
26th. This event was a huge success. St.
Paul’s own Parish Rep, Connie K. was cooking up Polish treats. The food, entertainment and the company were truly fantastic.
For only $15/person it was a great evening,
I would highly recommend it. They even
had door prizes and raffles. Hope to see you
next year.
Mark your calendar for our next meeting on
November 25th at 7:00 pm in the Library.
Speaker Session: The Specialist High Skills
Majors (SHSM) Programs-Our Teachers
from the 3 areas. We strive for a casual
atmosphere for parents to come enjoy an
evening with other parents.
Although he has been hard at work for several months at St. Dominic Church, we
would like to thank Fr. Phil Jones for greeting our community at our opening school
Mass. Fr. Phil is the new Pastor of St. Dominic Church and we thank him for making
our school feel welcome at the Church. We use the Church hall over twenty times
each year for our retreat program. Fr. Noel and Fr. Rudy also celebrate Mass each
Thursday morning @ 7:30 a.m. in our School Chapel. We do not take the marvelous
relationship that we share with St. Dominic Church for granted. We are thankful that
we have such caring and generous Priests nearby!
While you all know about the amazing programming St. Paul TV- Studio 30, did you
know that St. Paul is also featured on Radio? St. Paul students are featured on Radio
Maria/Holy Mother World Network on the last Tuesday of each month for a 90 minute Catholic Youth Speak Program. The Radio Maria team consists of Michel Filion
(Musical Director), Kaitlyn Vetro, Emily De Luca, Nicole Dalli, David Patch, Meagan
Medeiros and Dylan Prior. Each month a special guest is interviewed live, on-air, by
the Radio Maria panel. Past guests have included, Mr. Schmidt, Ms. Hastings, Ms.
Primier and Mr. Guilherme. Ms. Laxton, Math Expert, is going to be the special November guest. She is going to discuss sacred-geometry, I think? You can listen to this
live program at: http://www.hmwn.net/ on Tuesday, November 24, 2009 at 8:30 p.m.
You can call in and be part of the live discussion!

how to get good marks, Set goals, Get
involved, Make good choices and decisions,
Know how to handle stress,Use available
resources &Plan and prepare for your future.
Finally...
Heartfelt thanks to Ibtesam (Lisa) Istafan
for her love and devotion to our PIP students and St. Paul staff. You will be greatly
missed!
Semester One Final exams will run January
26 through January 29. Have a great semester everyone!
Student Council
It has been a very busy year so far for the St. Paul Student Council. The year started off with
a Welcome Back BBQ, which helped bring a sense of community among students and staff...
as well as providing free food! This was quickly followed by our first fundraising effort of
selling SPC cards. Some of the proceeds from these sales are put towards the running of
student council events. The students have continued to work to build community and raise
funds by having a bake sale, with many more to follow, as well as lunch time activities to get
students involved.
Our students know that there are many things in this world that they can help to improve.
They decided that Breast Cancer awareness is an important area to focus on and, therefore,
created an extra dress down day on October 28th in order to raise money and awareness for
this worthy cause. This event was a great success, showing the student body’s understanding
that they can do their part to put an end to such a horrible disease.
To keep the school spirit alive, the first week of November will be a spirit week, with a pep
rally, varsity game and other school-wide activities. Students can also look forward to the
annual Semi-Formal in February, more bake sales and lunch time activities throughout the
year, as well as many environmental initiatives which are currently in the works. Keep your
eyes and ears open for more events to come. Students of St. Paul get involved!
ACT NOW
The ACT NOW committee, which is a group of dedicated students working to help our community has been very busy this year. They ran a very successful Thanksgiving Food drive
collecting over 3000 items that will go a long way in helping those most in need in both our
school and parish community. A huge thank you goes out to all who contributed. We look
forward to participating in the St. Domenic’s Christmas Bazaar coming up in November. St.
Paul is always well represented and we are proud of how committed our young people are to
the parish.
On October 26th, St. Paul was blessed to host the Resurrection Dance Troupe of Haiti.
This group of young men from St. Joseph’s Orphanage in Haiti, wowed our Grades 9 and
10 students with their dancing. Through their passion, joy and love for their country, they
demonstrated their strength of spirit and their wealth of talent. Our students were able to
witness first hand that our self-worth is not measured by what we own, or what job we have,
but rather by who we are - Children of God! On behalf of the St. Paul community we are
extremely grateful to our Haitian dancers and we welcome them back anytime. This year the
ACT NOW committee will be fundraising for St. Joseph’s latest cause, which is building a
girl’s school in Haiti. Listen for announcements about our upcoming annual Christmas raffle.
We remember that November is the month of Remembrance. We thank all the parents, students and staff who bought tulips in memory of a loved one.
Finally on behalf of Ms. Hastings, Ms. Vono and Mr. Guilherme, we thank our group of dedicated students who give so willingly of their time to help others. We are extremely proud of
you and we could not do this without your help.
