‘ BAG IT ! PROGRAM ’ Sept 2015 Dear Parents/Guardians: The students in our class have been hard at work exploring and learning through various Literacy and Numeracy activities. In addition to our language and Mathematics curriculum, I am very excited to introduce the Family BAG IT! Program. Through this program we hope to be able to explore many meaningful and enjoyable mathematics and literacy activities. Here is how it works….. Each child will have their own bring assigned to them. In the bag, their will be home activities for you to explore as a family. Some activities will require things that can be found around the home; for other activities, what is needed will be inside the bag. Your child can explore these activities with the whole family or individual members, such as a parent, brother, or sister. When children participate in activities with the family, their selfconfidence increases and their attitude towards Mathematics and Literacy becomes more positive. Each week …… One Math activity + reflection book, as well as One book + reading response activity will be sent home with your child every TUESDAY . Please have your child return the bag to the class with items completed by the following TUESDAY. That day, your child will get to choose a new activity and book to take home. A) READING: A book and reading response The goal would be for each student to read at least 10 or more minutes each day. Listening to your child read, taking turns reading, as well as discussing books are all ways to foster a love of reading in everyone! Included in the bag will be: 1. A book (and words cards if applicable) 2. A duo tang for … a) Weekly Reading log/record sheet. b) Weekly Reading response activities. ~ Please help to ensure these are completed and returned each week. B) MATHEMATICS: Math game/activity & reflection The activities chosen provide children opportunities to solve problems, use logical thinking, develop strategies, as well as communicate their Mathematical thinking and understanding. Some activities will review concepts that have already been presented in class, some will extend your child’s understanding, and some may prepare your child for concepts to be explored in class in the future. Included in the bag will be: 1. A game/activity and materials if needed 2. A duo tang for… a) Weekly Math Activity log/record sheet b) Reflections When an activity is returned completed each week, , students will be given the opportunity to earn Class Coupons for rewards such as indoor recess with a friend, computer time, arts and crafts, or non-edible and peanut free edible treats from our Teacher Store. Thank you very much for your continued support of your child’s learning. I welcome any ideas, suggestions, or feedback you may have for the take-home BAG IT program. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns about your child’s participation. Partners in Education, Mrs. Balanzin-vite OCT- SERC/SERT Resource teacher
