I hope everyone had a very blessed and fun Christmas holiday. The break in routine gives us time to reflect as well as rest in order to prepare us for the many new adventures to come! In the weeks leading up to Christmas the students enjoyed learning about Advent and The Christmas Story. The grade ones enjoyed an Advent retreat day where all classes rotated and participated in various activities. Crafts, Christmas carols and a special movie. “The Little Drummer Boy” movie was seen and the students reflected upon the meaning. Upon returning to school we learned about and embraced one final celebration, The Epiphany, (when the three wise men bring gifts to baby Jesus.) Students enjoyed brainstorming ways to give our Lord Jesus a gift to heaven. Some responses included blowing kisses, a kind prayer, a happy song, showing kindness to others, helping and sharing with others. All which would warm Jesus’s heart. In the church this year the focus is on the Year of Mercy which has generated much talk and lessons on how to be a forgiving friend. News In The Classroom: In December we got to know our second rabbit “Snowball” as we welcomed him into the class on alternating weeks to Thumper. The students have been intrigued and interested in all the differences between Snowball and Thumper. They have very enthusiastically learned how to feed and tidy their cage. The students have been writing about the different attributes that they like in each pet rabbit. We all have made discoveries about the two rabbits which led to some great learning we had in math with graphing. The students enjoyed making up survey questions and asking their friends what is their favourite type of rabbit? Their favourite fur colour and favourite name to call the rabbits. As a result the students learned how to read different types of graphs and how to ask survey questions. We applied this new learning to questions about ourselves too! Such as, what is our favourite foods, colours, places to visit, animals, and fun activities. We have all enjoyed getting to know our very favourite things while practicing our math skills! We wrapped up our scientific inquiry on seasons. Our fashion show was a big success as the students demonstrated their learning with showcasing their creations of seasonal wear! I would like to gently remind all parents to send in extra socks and snow pants to school to wear daily. The winter winds and snow/sleet are upon us and the children do get quite wet. They would benefit from extra socks and mittens in their backpack to use as needed. Please remember to label all the items so they can be found easily. Currently we have started a new unit in geometry using 2-D and 3-D shapes. Students have been actively investigating the differences between the two types through games and activities at various math centres in our room. We look forward to making our 3-D castles next week and we just finished making 2-D pictures. It has been lots of fun to count all the different shapes used in our pictures. Inquiry: January will be a very busy month. We are continuing to focus on our new inquiry on Roles and Responsibilities In Our World. The students are very eager to share their chores and jobs they have at home. I am asking that you monitor your child’s chores/responsibilities at home for two weeks and take pictures of them doing their chores. We have been taking pictures of the students completing their jobs at school to use for our project. The students then will be given time at school to write about their role as a sibling, what chores they have at home and at school and how they help the family. Any discussions you can have with them to facilitate the project would be welcome. Feel free to send in extra pictures of your child in action!!!! The students will begin to compile their many works on a poster board. A separate letter detailing instructions will be coming home on Friday. As always feel free to contact myself at school or through the agenda if you have any questions. Thank you and don’t forget to follow us on twitter! Grade1@Rizarri110 Kindly, Mrs. Rizarri
