INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY APPLICATION IN BUSINESS
BUSINESS PORTFOLIO ASSIGNMENT
10% of Final Mark
Overview
Working in groups of two, you will develop a business portfolio and an e-commerce plan for your
business. The purpose of this assignment is to utilize all the application programs you will have
learned in this course and to apply the e-commerce theory you have learned in class.
Instructions
1. Select a type of business that lends itself to being part of an e-commerce plan.
2. Identify what services you will offer and/or what products you will be selling.
3. Select a name for your company.
4. In your portfolio, you must include the following items:
a) MS- Publisher-2 documents
1) a business card
2) a brochure outlining services and/or products and company history
1)company letterhead with logo, slogan and complete contact information
2) floor plan (must use drawing features for this document)
a) MS-WORD - 3 documents
3) Mail Merge Document to your 20 of your customers thanking them for their
order and telling them about new products on the web site.
(The following fields must come from a ACCESS document and be unique to
each mailing: Title, FirstName, LastName, Customer#(set as Primary
Key),Address, City, Country, PostalCode, ItemLastOrdered)
**This letter should be written on your Company Letterhead
b) MS-EXCEL - 3 documents
1) a balance sheet
2) an income statement
3) 1 other Excel document of your choice (i.e. invoice, staff schedule etc.)

1) Customer List –to be used as data for the Mail Merge
2) Employee list
d) MS-POWERPOINT- 1 document

1) 20-30 minute class presentation about your business.
- Research Office Ergonomics and create a one page document that explains how
you will protect you employees and computer operators.

5. In addition to the above items, you will include a brief report (no more than 5 pages, doublespaced) which will discuss the following headings:
a) Business Description – history, name and type of business, state why this type of
business was selected etc.
b) Services Offered and/or Merchandise Sold – provide a brief description of the services
offered and/or products sold and include a chart of prices.
c) Rationale for Web Site Design – what makes your site a good one? Include Server
hardware, Server software, Merchant & Payment software.
d) E-commerce Plan – describe the step-by-step process that will allow your business to
become an e-business. Be sure to incorporate theory learned from the Electronic
Business Unit, including:
 Security features(Antivirus, Firewalls, IDS, passwords etc)
 Network setup(Topology, Hardware, Architecture, Os etc)
 Commerce Law (Copywrites, Trade Marks or Patents),
 Cost of web hosting services, etc.) .
6. Items are to be organized in a duotang folder as follows:
a) Title page with business’ name, students’ names, course code, teacher’s name and date
b) Table of Contents
c) Word/Publisher documents (5)
d) Excel documents (3)
e) Access documents (2)
f) Ergonomic Report
g) Report including a reference page
h) Attach an envelope (taped to the back inside cover of duotang) and provide a CD with the
PowerPoint presentation file and web page coding file
i) Assessment sheet (do not secure, place loosely in duotang)
7. Each group will be present their company and e-commerce plan to the class using a PowerPoint
presentation. The web site must also be shown and explained to the class as part of the
assignment.

*A Doctor's Note will be required from any student that is absent on the day of the
Presentation.
*If a Doctor's note is not received by the second day of the student's return, a mark of
ZERO will be assigned. Unaccountable absences will also result in a ZERO mark.
