| Seniors Silver Threads: Election Season is Here! by Barbara Johnston This November, we vote for state offices (November 3, 2015), in March the Republicans may have their first caucus, in May (May 17, 2016) we have primaries and next November (November 8, 2016), we vote for a new president! The political ads on television will proliferate and political debates will disrupt programming on a regular basis. If you love politics, you will definitely enjoy the 2015-16 campaign season, and even if politics is not your favorite “contact sport,” please note these dates and be sure to VOTE ! In the Bowling Green/Warren County area, everything related to the voting process is coordinated by the County Clerk’s office located in the courthouse at 429 E. 10th Street in Bowling Green. If you are not registered to vote, now is the time to get in touch with the County Clerk by calling their Voter Registration number, 270843-5306, for information or visiting the County Clerk’s web site at www.warrencountyclerkky. com/new/voter-registration/. Older voters who are not able to vote at the polls due to disability or illness and those who are residents of Kentucky but will be out of state on election dates may qualify to vote by Absentee Ballot. Voters should contact the County Clerk’s office a month before an election to determine if they are eligible for an Absentee Ballot as an application must be sent and returned before the ballot can be mailed. Please call the County Clerk at 270-843-5306 to begin the process or to request additional information. For those of you who would like to play a more active role in the election process, the County Clerk’s office is always in need of those who would like to become “Election Officers.” According to Whitney Rees, Deputy Clerk, Voter Registration Department, every Election Day 32 happenings.com teams of four or five Election Officers man each of the 88 precincts in our area. They arrive at 5 a.m. and they do not leave until after the 6 p.m. “close and clean-up” is completed. Election Officers are “pot-luck” folks and bring their own breakfast, lunch and dinner with them as they remain on duty for the entire day. Quite a job and one which does require a training program that lasts about two hours and generally takes place about two weeks before an election. If you are interested in becoming an Election Officer, please contact the County Clerk’s office at 270-843-5306. Although you may indicate the precinct in which you would like to work, Election Officers are assigned on an “as needed” basis and you may find that you are not assigned to a precinct in your neighborhood. The Clerk’s office also maintains a list of alternates and if you are on that list, you may find your phone ringing with an assignment the day before the election! Of course, both the Democratic and Republican Parties would love to have you work with them this election season! Contact the Republican Party of Warren County by email at warrencountyrepublican@gmail.com or the Warren County Republican Women’s Club by calling Cheryl Mann at 270-996-8475. The web site for those interested in working with the Democratic Party is www.warrencountykydems. com/ and for information on the Warren County Democratic Women’s Club, call 270-842-3416. Romanza Johnson is the current President and she will be happy to talk with you about meetings, events and volunteer opportunities.
