Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: (As Good As It Gets) The disorder is broken down into either Obsessions or compulsions Obsessions • Recurrent thoughts, images, or impulses that are intrusive and inappropriate and induce anxiety or distress ( fear the house will burn down and check the oven 12 times) • The person attempts to ignore, suppress, or neutralize the thoughts Compulsions • Repetitive behaviors (hand washing, checking) or mental acts (counting or praying) that the person feels driven to perform in response to an obsession • The behaviors or mental acts are aimed at preventing or reducing distress or at preventing a dreaded event or situation The person realizes that the obsessions or compulsions are unreasonable. The obsessions or compulsions cause distress, consume more than an hour a day or interfere with normal functioning ( work, academic or social)
