ROOM 109 Spencer Loomis Hawthorn Woods, IL 5/6/16 Name __________________ Ms. Vanderlinden’s Friday Note! Dear Parents, Please look over the papers your child has been bringing home throughout the week. Sign and return this note on Monday. Through open communication, we can work together to ensure a successful school year for all! This Week’s Highlights Reading – As we continue in our Poetry Unit, the children are using clues to recognize the mood a poet is conveying in his/her poem, determining how words and phrases create rhythm to bring meaning to the poem, uncovering the main idea of the poem by rereading it carefully, and thinking about how the words in the poem create pictures in our minds that go beyond the words on the page to better understand the poem. We are noticing how important word choice is in poems since they are shorter pieces of texts. Writing – Student have been busy writing poems and expository pieces with supporting details about one of their favorite people. They are also using descriptive words to describe the growth of their plants in science as well as to explain the parts of plants. Math – The children are focusing on subtraction in our next Module. They are using the counting back strategy, place value, and yes, the number line again, to help them subtract one- and twodigit numbers from three-digit numbers. Science – Students planted bean seeds and are watching them grow! After investigating plants and their parts, we are on to exploring animals! Study Habits – Your child is working on: ___ ___ ___ ___ paying attention in class following directions consistently talking at appropriate times being a respectful listener Upcoming Events May 9th – Harrison’s Birthday!!!
