Your child (ren) were thrilled to introduce you to their teachers and show off their work and classrooms! School Council Congratulations to the twelve parents who submitted nomination forms. All submitted names have been acclaimed and no election is necessary. Our first School Council meeting will be held on Thursday, October 8th at 7 p.m. in the school library. The meeting is open to all parents. WORLD TEACHERS’DAY Every year on October 5, World Teacher’s Day celebrates and highlights the contribution of teachers towards the education and development of children around the world. CONFIDENTIALITY Confidentiality of Student & Staff Personal Information We now live in an age where most parents/guardians and many students have cell phones and other Personal Electronic Equipment (PEDs) that have photo, recording and videotaping features. The temptation to take photos, videotape friends, teachers at school and other events is high, especially when parent/family members are unable to attend the event. The accessibility of these advanced technologies make it, easy and immediate. The concerns that schools have, is how can the school, maintain and protect the confidentiality of our students and staff when acts that seem so innocent can potentially have serious/harmful consequences. If photos, video clips are placed on FaceBook pages, YouTube and other websites, control is lost on who can view it. In addition, written consent from the participants must be secured to post such information. Dufferin-Peel Catholic School Board adheres to strict policies and guidelines on maintaining the confidentiality of students and staff. At the beginning of each year, parents/ guardians sign forms granting/disallowing photos of their child(ren) to be taken for school use (i.e., in classrooms, hallway bulletin boards and assembly video presentations). Schools should not post personal information on their websites. Personal information is defined in Section 2 of the MFIPPAct, as 'recorded information about an identifiable individual'. Personal information should only be posted where informed consents have been obtained from all affected individuals or from persons who are legally authorized to consent on their behalf. Informed consent requires that the person consenting understands the exact nature of the information for which consent is sought, the potential consequences of signing the consent form, and be given the right to revoke the consent at any time. As such, we require parents/guardians/students to respect and adhere to Dufferin Peel’s policy on Confidentiality of Student & Staff Information. LOST & FOUND Our Lost & Found Table is growing rapidly and few students are claiming lost clothes. In order for students to identify their clothing we encourage you to label each article. As well, school and lunch bags should be labeled. In the event that your child loses a personal item you may sign in at the office and then go and check the “Lost and Found” boxes. VIRTUES PROGRAM Affirmation: I understand other’s feelings and difficulties. I am able to share in the joy of others. I can sense the hurt around me. I care about who is in trouble or has made a mistake. I am a loyal and committed friend. Throughout the month of October we will focus on the virtue of empathy. An empathetic person listens attentively, notices and responds to others, can see a situation from another person’s point of view and knows that different people may feel differently about the same thing. As a Catholic community let us pray for the grace and strength to be people of empathy. Library News and Book Fair 2015 Thank you to all families who supported our Scholastic Book Fair. The Family Event would not have been a success without the assistance of our library helpers. Congratulations to our draw prize winners. Library News The 2015-2016 school year is off to a great start. Student volunteers are assisting as Library Helpers , the Reading Club has begun, allowing students to visit the library during last recess and students have been introduced to Digital Citizenship lessons during their library visits. ARRIVALS in PRIMARY YARDS Upon arriving students are to gather in the school yard at the side and rear of the building. Parents/ guardians and baby sitters are requested to move away from the Primary Entrance, to avoid blocking easy entry for our Primary students. Please say goodbye at the front of the school and allow your child the opportunity to develop independence and a sense of play with their peers, line up, and enter the building. Thanks go out to all the parents who have been following the entry and dismissal procedures. It has greatly reduced congestion in the halls and school yard at these times. Students are not to enter the school by the front doors, unless arriving late. Students arriving late must report to the office and get a late slip. SCHOOL DRIVEWAY / KISS ‘N RIDE We ask that parents continue to use the designated entrance of the school driveway to drop off and pick up your child during morning Kiss ‘n Ride. Do not park in the dropoff lanes or block the bus lane. Students and parents walking to school are reminded to stay on the sidewalks and to use the crosswalk when traveling to the front of the school. We are in need of volunteers for the Kiss N’Ride Program . If you are able to help students before school or at dismissal —helping students get into / out of cars and/or directing students to sidewalks please let the office know! COOLER WEATHER—INDOOR/OUTDOOR SHOES As temperatures drop, students need to dress warmly and have an additional pair of pants handy for unexpected playground splashes. Please remember to bring a pair of indoor shoes to keep mud and sand at bay. It is also important for students to bring—INDOOR/OUTDOOR SHOES as we move into the Fall Season and experience a change in weather. Your cooperation is appreciated. UP TO DATE INFORMATION Please inform the office of any changes to telephone numbers, work numbers, cell phone numbers and contact people! We cannot stress enough the importance of this information. This includes any medical information that may jeopardize the health and safety of your child(ren). DOGS in the SCHOOL PLAYGOUND Please be aware that dogs should not be brought onto school property. If your dog is escorting you and your child to and from school please make arrangements to meet your child on the sidewalk in front of the school. Teacher Cathy Personal Electronic Devices on Board Premises and/or Board Sanctioned Events for Educational Purposes: The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board acknowledges the value of the use of technology for learning. Students are permitted to register and use personal electronic devices (PEDs) on board premises and/or board sanctioned events for educational purposes, under the direction of staff and only with parent/guardian permission (GF 066, Network User Application and Agreement). Students may register their PED for the purpose of connecting to the board wireless network. Students are required to adhere to the student “Personal Electronic Device Used with WI-FI Network Student Agreement” and the “Network User Application and Agreement.” The student agreement GF 337 will need to be signed before students can use the WiFi network. Please be advised that the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board will not be responsible for any cost incurred through the use of personal data plans. PEDs are to be used responsibly and should not interfere with learning; their use must comply with the Catholic Code of Conduct, board policies and procedures. Any personal communications (i.e., phone calls, text messages, etc.) will continue to be directed through the main office. Failure to comply with these guidelines may result in a loss of PED privileges and/or any other consequences deemed necessary by school administration. The school principal may authorize limited acceptable uses of personal electronic devices during school-sanctioned activities for a specific designated purpose outside of instructional spaces and/or in common areas. Students are responsible for the safety and security of PEDs at all times and the Board assumes no responsibility for lost, damaged or stolen devices. Our CATHOLIC SCHOOL HERITAGE A Historical Understanding of Key Issues Related to Catholic Education: Our Catholic School Heritage 1. How long has the Catholic separate schools been educating Catholic children and contributing to the public good in Ontario? For about 170 years in the early 1800s there were separate schools in many cities, towns and townships. In Peel, three separate schools opened before Confederation (1867): St. James in Malton in the 1830s, St. John‟s Agriculture College (1861) and St. Patrick‟s (1861), both in Wildfield. 2. Has the Ontario government always supported separate schools? Yes, as did its predecessor, the United Legislature of Canada East (now Quebec) and Canada West (now Ontario) during its total life from 1841 to 1867. One of the first pieces of legislation it passed in 1841 was the Common School Act, with a separate school clause. 3. Why did the United Legislature of Canada East and Canada West keep improving separate school legislation? It responded to Catholic parents, trustees, bishops and priests, editors of the four Catholic newspapers, members of the business and professional world, all of whom argued for legal and financial rights for separate schools. 4. Was there opposition to separate schools before Confederation? Yes, as now, there were advocates of one school system. Protestant spokespersons believed in the adequacy of the common (now public) school‟s basic non-denominational Christianity, which constituted an important element of the common school‟s religion lessons and their readers. They held that beliefs specific to certain religions should be taught in the churches and homes. 5. Why did Catholics find the non-denominational religious education of the common school unsatisfactory? Catholics wanted separate schools where all the beliefs of the Catholic Church would be taught, where the pupils would live their faith in a sacramental and community manner in proximity to the parish church and priest, and where religion would permeate the reading, literature and history curriculum. Furthermore, as modern times arrived, the multiculturalism of the public school’s student body necessitated the eradication of the teaching Christianity. EMERGENCY PROCEDURE DRILLS In accordance with Ministry regulations, we will conduct three fire drills this fall. While we hope that a real fire never occurs, this practice helps prepare students in the event of a real fire. In addition we have scheduled a lockdown practice for the first week of November. This procedure is intended to prepare students should a high risk incident occur on school property or in the near vicinity. EQAO RESULTS Last May and June marked the annual administration of the Primary and Junior Assessments of Reading, Writing and Mathematics by the Education Quality and Accountability Office (E.Q.A.O.). Parents of children who wrote the 2014-2015 assessment will be receiving their child’s Individual Student Report shortly. These results provide a “snapshot” of each student’s achievement of the knowledge and skills in the areas of reading, writing and mathematics. More general information may be found on the EQAO website at www.eqao.com. If you have any questions concerning your child’s results, please feel free to contact the school. TOYS Please keep your child’s valuables at home. Staff cannot be responsible for any valuables that your child brings to school. Money, jewellery, Pokemon cards, electronics, toys, etc., should be kept at home. “Wheelie shoes” and “Bay Blades” are not allowed at school. As you know organizational skills are imperative in the success of a child in school. Please take some time to look over the agenda with your child(ren). It is particularly important to emphasize that the agenda is to be used daily to assist your child in organizing his/her time and to keep parents informed on what is happening in class and in the school. Please remind your child (ren) to write contact numbers in their agenda so if they need to call home they have the numbers easily accessible. HALLOWEEN DANCE This year we will be having a Halloween Danceon-thon on Friday, October 30th.. Students are encouraged to show school spirit by dressing up. Our School Council will be organizing the event. Please remember that the Halloween costume can’t have any weapons, and the students needs to refrain from wearing masks as they obstruct their view. Halloween was originally a Christian Holy Day. Halloween is a shortened form of All Hallow’s Evening. It is the evening before the Feast of All Saints on the Roman Calendar. For Byzantine Catholics this is the Feast of ВСІХ СВЯТИХ— the Sunday after Pentecost. On All Saints Day and All Souls Day we remember the reposed who need our prayers. It is also a time to learn about the Saints who have loved God and us. Decorations and costumes reflect the colours of the fall season- orange and black. The harvest of pumpkins, colourful gourds and bountiful fruit—given to us by God– remind us of the goodness in our world . (Archpriest Roman Galadza ) PEDICULOSIS We would like to bring to your attention a problem that occurs from time to time each year in most schools. The problem is infestation by head lice (pediculosis). If cases are found in the school, we shall inform the parents. If your children do become infested by head lice, we will ask you to keep them out of school until after they have been treated with the correct shampoo and their hair is entirely clear of both lice and nits (eggs). Your cooperation is appreciated as we quickly try to control outbreaks. If you have any concerns, please contact the office. HALLOWEEN SAFETY 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Please do not wear a face mask, so you will be able to see clearly. Wear light covered clothing so drivers can see you. Carry a flashlight so you will be to see on dark streets. Go out with an adult, or an older brother or sister, if you are under 10 years of age. Stay away from cars, and friendly strangers in cars. Watch for cars, and look both ways when crossing the street. Wear costumes above your shoes, so you are less likely to trip. Do not eat treats until they have been checked by your parent(s).
